Audio Hijack Pro (record DRM iTunes)

Garage band is the easiest, it has access to your itunes library and easily exports back out. Just use the cut tool to choose the section you want and then use the fade out tool to add fade ins and fade outs. Super easy, quick and free.

Audacity is great too. Plus it's free (I never pay for software) and it runs on Windoze, Mac, and Linux.

+1 on audacity

works great, BUT it won't read AAC's.

Thank you for the links guys. I was just going to post and ask about a free program to cut out the exact part I want for Vista. My problem was that the ringtones I had through iBrickr were fading in and by that time the ring was almost done.

Quicktime Pro to cut the track. iTunes to convert to AAC. MakeiPhoneRingtone to do the rest. Works like a charm.

I just drag the files over to the track pane then edit...

Oh ok! I was trying to OPEN or IMPORT. I didnt realize you had to create a project. I split the piece of the song that I want to make a ringtone with but cannot seem to get rid of all the blank space. The ringtone is still a couple minutes long instead of 30 seconds or so. Thanks for your help.

I got it guys. Just had to play a little. Thanks again!

Good to hear that! I should have mentioned that after cutting and adding the fadeout, you simply export the song in AAC format but it looks like you found that out already. Enjoy your new ringtones!
