Fido Z310a - can I use Wotan?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi all,
I have a Fido-locked Z310a with R1KF001 firmware and I would like to flash it via Wotan. On their website, only the Z310 is listed. AFAIK there is only Z310i (900/1800/1900) and Z310a (850/1800/1900), so does this mean the firmware versions listed on the Wotan page can be used for either the "i" or the "a" models?

Thanks in advance.

Did you ever hear anything back? I would love to debrand my AT&T Z310a as after playing with the phone, they disabled a bunch of SE features like Email and the Shortcut menu. I noticed Wotan still only lists the Z310 ...

Haven't heard back from Wotan yet...

Anyone else knows about this?

The firmwares listed on Wotan will work for Z310a. I got an affirmative answer from them and then flashed it to R8BA024 from R1KF001. The crackling sound I used to get once the call connects is gone now, so I'm much happier.

Sorry to jump in the topic here, but what email did you use to get answers? I emailed them a question and got no reply after a few days?

I just submitted a support enquiry email... it's somewhere on their site.

Did you find an improvement on your phone? I found that it removed primarily the voice quality problems, but battery life is still so-so. What firmware version did you use?

i have noticed the sound quality is better and i have more bars in my apartment now, i used R6BC002 CID52, ill let you know on the battery life, i just did a full charge yesterday so ill just have to wait and see.

Any further updates to your Z310 performance after debranding? Which firmware would be the best to flash to?

It's so far so good for me on R8BA024, but that FW version has fewer CDA choices vs the R6BC002. The batt life is slightly better than the Fido original FW, but perhaps this improvement wasn't so noticeable as I use Bluetooth frequently (well, at least 40 min a day while I drive).

For me, it was important to get rid of that stupid crackling noise everytime the phone connects a call, so the flash already satisfied my needs.

So in addition to the standard unbranding benefits, R8BA024 improves battery life and audio quality.

Are audio quality improvements only for removing the crackling noise during call connection, or are there any additional audio quality improvements for the duration of the inbound/outbound call? On both the caller/called party?

Also, did you notice any reception improvements after upgrading firmware/debranding? I've read reviews that the Z310 has weaker reception strength than other SE's....

Thanks again!

I think there's a slight improvement in voice quality both in and outbound.

Reception isn't the best to begin with on the Z310, and I don't notice too much of a difference. Relying on bars on the signal meter is always dodgy anyway; I wish there's a netmonitor mode like my M55. (BTW, are you still using it?)

Great, I think I might just bite the bullet and flash it via Wotan. Does anybody have any other flashing experiences with the Z310?

I let my Siemens go last year. I went from M55 to M56 to CT66 to AL21 & AF51. I loved them, I did, but had to move on or be left behind...

I'm using a Z710i now and am very satisfied. If only SE could enable changing ringtones according to profile. There are some things I do miss.

Go with Wotan, I don't think you'd be disappointed. It's just that with R8BA024 you have limited choices with extra languages.

I still got my M55 and took it travelling just a couple months ago. It's still very awesome - signal strength was brilliant (but mind you, I was using 900 and 1800).

Hey, you can also convert your Z710i to W710i also. It would be a fun one to try.

I just upgraded my Z310 to R8BA024 "Europe_4" via Wotan. My computer was having a hard time recognizing the phone at first, but after tinkering with the drivers, everything went smoothly.

So far, I've noticed improved audio qualities. No crackling noises when connecting, and slightly more clear sounding audio also.

Also, the ringtones have improved dramatically. The original Fido f/w caused ringtones to loop too quickly, which sounded really cheesy. R8BA024 fixes that, making ringers sound more "normal", looping with proper time intervals.

Ok, time now to read up on the Z710-W710 threads!

I think I had the Europe_4 pack too. Glad to hear that the voice qualities have improved, so I wasn't the only one.

I just sold the Z310 over the weekend - I think I'll miss it, but it's going to make way for another phone.
