Is the Wing For me?

I have never really owned a smartphone, but with my girlfriend in full swing text messaging me, and no access to e-mail at work, I think I really want a QWERTY keyboard to keep up. Also, with Fantasy Football in full gear, I need more vibrant web access than basic slow T-Zones WAP access. Currently switching between a samsung calculator P300 and a Moto RAZR V3x I would like the bigger screen. I would go Iphone, but the unlocked ones are too damn expensive.

I have ability to buy used T-mobile wing for under 300 through some local sales, but was wondering, are there better HTC products out there that are unbranded, such as the HTC touch? Any other phones I should consider? I was just looking at the Nokia E90 communicator, but 900 bucks or so is way out of the question for a cell phone for me.

Look into the dash. If you don't need the touchscreen because you are used to a PPC already, it might be a better choice.

I agree - the Dash is a great device. You can use it one handed; it is difficult to use a sliding touch qwerty that way, whether it is open or closed. The stylus on the Wing (I had a Sprint Mogul; same thing) is fun at first but gets old very quickly. And if you open it and turn it sideways (into landscape) you have to hold it with a third hand to type on it.

Not enough, imho, is said about the neat Dash navigation top row; whatever you have recently done is shown as an icon, and you use the 'mouse' to navigate thru, and the less recently used icons drop off. You bring up something obscure, it's there!

Anyway, I'm a real fan. When the HTC S630 gets American support, I'll be on that right away. It's the big brother in terms of speed.

The other thing is, USE the phone for a half hour in a store, or at a friend's, before committing the money. I loved the Mogul (Wing) for the first day or two, and then started to hate it because of the battery not holding a charge for very long, and the interface. I got used to the interface, and still missed my Dash. So back went the Mogul.

Good luck!

Hmmm.. my friend was complaining about his dash all the time, saying the volume would randomly adjust and the phone would act up. I guess there is a sensitive volume control on the side that always causes him to miss calls and stuff. I don't know what to do. As far as making calls, I have a BMW with integrated bluetooth, so when I"m driving, everything is voice dialing. I would mainly be texting and e-mailing while i'm at work, occasionally while driving. I didn't think you actually NEEDED the stylus with the wing, you can touch the screen with your finger right and used the control buttons for a lot of stuff right??

Grubster - true about that weird strip on the side - mine is fully disabled, after setting volume to max first. It was awful; most folks disable it. In fact, the audio itself is not all that great out the back speaker; some have updated some firmware to fix that. I just don't try to use the speakerphone in noisy environments. Stylus is easier then using your finger for accuracy. This is all a matter of personal taste and preference, that's why I so strongly advise try it first, for a good amount of time. Also it's thicker than you might like. I ended up thinking that I really didn't need the whole bottom half and why was I using this device then. Good luck!!!

< because of the battery not holding a charge for very long>

I just wanted to add my two cents abt this. I've had a Wing for over 3 weeks now and use it a LOT. As a PDA and as a phone. The battery has always lasted thru the day and into the night. It has never even given me a low battery warning, so I haven't paid much attention to it. I charge it every nite and then carry it and use it all day. No problems. I really like my Wing.

Hope this helps!

I also have a Wing, I recently switched from a Dash and I'm not going back. I consider the Wing a superior phone. And believe it or not the Wing has been way more stable than my dash.
