Podcasts keep returning to phone.

Hi,
Maybe I am misunderstanding how itunes operates, but here goes. I am subscribed to several pod casts. iTunes downloads the new podcast just fine. They also sync the new ones just fine. Now when I play the podcast on my iPhone and delete it(on the iPhone) The next time I sync, shouldn't the podcast be marked played and if I have in preferences set to only keep unplayed podcasts, shouldn't it (itunes) delete played podcasts and not re-upload them to my iPhone??? Like I said, maybe I am misunderstanding the operation, but it seems like this would be a desireable behaviour based on the "keep only unplayed podcast" setting in preferences. Thanks in Advance.

(i copied this question from the apple forum as i have the same problem).

If you find out your answer somewhere else, please post it here. I run into the same thing but haven't investigated it. I usually just delete the podcast off of my computer to keep it from taking up space.

I have the same problem also. But the podcast's are deleted from the podcast button on my iphone, however they do remain in the artist/song/album view. And I can still listen to them from those 3 locations.

I have left clicked all podcasts to auto delete in itunes. But nothing works. You would think something a basic as this might work!

I also manually delete the darn things.

Still looking for an answer to this too...

I have found that if you reset the iPhone (or power it off/on) that the podcasts loses its "played" tag and will be re-synced. Also, to get iTunes to auto delete I have to press the refresh button at the bottom of the podcasts window.

I sync my contacts and calendar to my work Mac, and my music and podcasts to my home Mac. If I listen to a podcast at work and then sync the phone to the work computer, the podcast loses its "played" tag on the phone. It's pretty annoying.

tried that and didn't work for me. The only thing I know to do is delete the podcast on my computer after I listen to it.

One
Click the option to only sync checked items on the iPhone window in iTunes first tab page

Two
I choose option to sync the last three unplayed pod casts and only the pod cast categories I check on the iPhone pod cast tab. I deselect any pod casts that do not have the black dot indicating there are new pod casts from a given source. I am also careful not to over do the video pod casts as they can eat up memory fast.

Make your choices - APPLY

On the page with pod casts in iTunes I select the general option to retain only three unplayed pod casts. On the exception pod casts that I really like I right click and select DO NOT AUTO DELETE.

My pod casts generally take up about 18 GB in iTunes so I have to be selective in choosing the ones to carry. Some times I have an hankering for taking more than 3 of a certain category so my solution is to highlight the ones I want and choose the option to create a play list out of selected items. I find that play list under the MUSIC tab and check it. If you wanted to you could create a SMART play list bt that is too much work for a simple pod cast IMHO.

If I were moving between more than one computer I would deselect the option to even sync pod casts in other copies of iTunes.

BTW I have figured out a way to capture streaming media using a Firefox plugin and the Videora video converter to convert the flash video to MP4 for playing on the iPhone/iTouch.

Clips from the World's Funniest Commercials and Maniac.com are fun to share with others.

If you delete played content from the phone before syncing again it will never be marked as played nor will it be automatically deleted in iTunes.
It will reappear on the next sync of the iPhone unless you have toggled off one of the various sync options or deleted the original content or play list from iTunes itself before syncing.

BTW there is a set of free video pod casts from iTunes store that are extensive video tutorials in how to use iTunes. Those video pod casts may be helpful to you.
