iTunes V7.4.2 is out

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: dborja

MacRumors just reported that 7.4.2 is out. For those that downloaded it, what's new? Does the "simple" ringtone hack (renaming files) still work?

TIA

Posted by: dborja

The Apple site mentions WiFi iTunes and Starbucks downloads...

Posted by: flyingdutchman

Only iToner works. It seems all of the renaming workarounds are broken. Guess I'll stick with 7.4.0 a little longer

Yeah, I'm guessing the firmware update will be released tonight or tomorrow after this iTunes update.

Posted by: BornineastLA

I checked for updates and I got a new version update (I just updated to 7.4.1 yesterday). Will this prevent problems with software unlocking. Otherwise I am sticking with that I got.

Posted by: dborja

Can somebody check if this means that WiFi synching of contacts, schedules, pix, etc can be done now?

Edit: Probably not until the firmware update, come to think about it...

Agreed, it almost confirms an imminent firmware update...

Posted by: melman101

I've been hearing reports of self-made ringtones not working except with iToner.

Hope they can figure that out soon.

Posted by: ljorges

Well, my ringtones just went bye-bye.

No big loss. I'm sure someone will come up with something soon.

Now to see what Apple has in store for us with a firmware update.

Still having fun with my iPhone,

Les

I will be getting my iPhone in 2 days, I have the version 7.3.0, what version should I have If I want to use the mods?, unlock what not...?

Posted by: ljorges

Just checked my ringtones folder. The ringtones are still there. I bought one just to check out the differences. The only obvious difference I saw was under "more info" the bought one's codec was AAC (protected) and the bootlegged one's codec was just AAC. Any ideas???

V7.4.0 seems to be the friendliest to ringtone hacks, including the simple file-renaming one (*.m4r)...

Posted by: melman101

Les,

Interesting. Maybe they switched it to only playing DRM'd ringtones? That sucks.

Mel

Posted by: ljorges

Hope this isn't a stupid question, but is there anyway to convert an AAC to an AAC (protected) file? The extension looks like it hasn't outwardly changed.

do ringtones created with the meta value "--stik value=14" still work?

Posted by: Kar98

New workaround to be available in 3..2..

And.....they're off! Let's see how quickly someone can figure out the "fix".

Posted by: melman101

--stik does not work still according to some reports i saw around.

Posted by: melman101

Found this:

http://forums.macrumors.com/showpos...51&postcount=74

shadowfax: Try setting the metadata using atomic parsley, as described by this post (AtomicParsley ringtone.m4a --stik value=14) and then setting the extension on the output file to .m4r. it works, which is why I have been posting about it...

Edit: did not work, lost all ringtones. Still playing around with it.

Posted by: flyingdutchman

Well iToner does not work either. It will upload the ringtones, and they show up in the ringtones section on the iPhone itself, and they play when you select them, but when the phone rings all I get is more Marimba.

Posted by: NineToez

Guess I'm not updating iTunes, however it shouldn't affect anything if a new firmware comes up and I update the phone only, no?

Posted by: turbo-sc

bah, not updating until something worthy is released.

Posted by: mongoos150

Can we sync podcasts via wifi? I'll be waiting to upgrade. I don't want to loose my custom tones.

As long as you don't update iTunes on your computer, there shouldn't be a reason for you to lose your tones.

itoner works for me, try a quick reset.

Will the reverse syncing of iTunes WiFi work with just 7.4.0?

Which is why I commented I won't be upgrading. Not until there's another workaround through iTunes.

News on podcasts being updatable via wifi?

You bet your butt that iTunes 7.4.2 will be a minimum requirement to install the new firmware update.

Nvm, I am an absolute moron. LOL! Apparently, somehow Marimba got set as the default ringtone for my house line. iToner works without a hitch!

Posted by: davistld01

I just downloaded v7.4.2...and I have no idea why, really...

You know this how? I highly doubt this...they haven't done this in the past with the previous iPhone updates so why would they do it now?

Posted by: Cizan

I already have the one ringtone that I ever use on my iphone already so... im updating

It will probably be required to gain WiFi iTunes and synching. V7.4.1 doesn't have the capability...

I'll simply uncheck ringtone sync since I'm good with the ones I have right now. It's worth it for me to go from my V7.4 to V7.4.2 if WiFi synch is happening tomorrow...

I updated my iTunes and didnt lose my ringtone that i uploaded via iBrickr (it's an mp3 file... the sound the phones make when they ring in CTU on 24.. I know.. I'm a geek.. but thats a different story)

Apple does this kind of thing all the time. Os x 10.4 was required for the iPhone, as was iTunes 4.7 and for the wifi store I imagine 4.7.2 will be a requirement. I would also bet that had 10.4.1 been released at the time of iPhone 1.0.2 it would have been mandatory too. Apple do this all the time.

Actually you're wrong there because iPodTouch users have had access to the WiFi store for a few days now and they were using iTunes 7.4.1. AFAIK the WiFi store is the same for the iPhone and iPodTouch. I downloaded 7.4.2 but haven't installed it yet...will wait until the update comes out. If I can update the iPhone without updating iTunes will do so and then update iTunes later on.

Why? I have about 20 ringtones (non-songs) that I made myself using the .m4r and AtomicParsely hacks with a bunch assigned to contacts, etc. I don't feel like redoing it, although it's easy...I'm lazy.

Here is iTunes 7.4.1.2 if anyone needs it.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=0GDPE62L

Uncheck auto update while installing. After installed go to Edit-->Preferences uncheck check autoupdate, you will be fine.

You would think that if iTunes 7.4.2 was a major update that added functionality such as wifi iTunes store and Starbuck crap that the version number would be 7.5. Kind of makes me think this release was more of a remove the ringtone workaround.

Posted by: dborja

We outsiders don't know how Apple's CM works - when do they roll the major and minor rev numbers. Having said that, it appears that their system rolls the major rev number (7.x.y) for major iTunes changes, the secondary number (x.4.y) with new product lines that connect to iTunes and the minor number (x.y.2) with new/revised iTunes features for the product lines. Just MHO...

iToner works fine. Of course, I just installed iToner about 20 minutes ago; apparently they already had an update due to iTunes 7.4.2.

This was at the top of the web page for iToner:

New in iToner 1.0.1: iTunes 7.4.2 compatibility, along with other fixes and enhancements

if you are one of those PC people , I hear that iPhoneRingToneMaker still works. I'm a mac guy myself so I have no idea, however that is listed on the front page of macrumors as an "early reaction as still working". http://www.macrumors.com/
