For wife: HTC Vox or iPhone?

I am thinking of upgrading my wife's old Nokia 6820 which has the flip-out QWERTY keyboard and which she loves for sending text messages. A PPC would be too much for her to handle, which is why I am considering the HTC Vox (S710) for her with the slide-out keyboard. On the other hand, the iPhone now is as expensive as the Vox and all the little flaws the iPhone has might not bother her.

I understand that most reponses here might favor the Vox smartphone but maybe someone here has gone through something similar for the significant other or him/herself.

I think the iphone might be a viable option to consider. It's sexy - which might be a plus - but it's very very easy to use. MUCH more intuitive than win mobile - IMO. Plus the payoff is better. Which means, you can get google maps for Win Mobile - but it works / looks better on iPhone. Email - looks great and is easy to use. Web browsing is amazing - and the ability to load pix of the kids (or whatever) is a definite plus.

Battery life is comparable - but the iPhone does a great job of showing you how many hours / min you have left on the charge - instead of just bars. Firmware updates are a cinch w/ the iPhone. Just say "yes" when prompted - and it goes.

I also am a little concerned about the Vox build quality. A lot of the reviews I've read suggest a lot of play between the phone and keyboard. One review even showed a pic w/ a credit card stuck between the keyboard and phone. Not good. The slider will lock open - but doesn't lock closed and wobbles. That would drive me crazy.

pretty good points. I have the TyTN and am very happy with the quality and consider the Vox the little (smartphone) brother that I could maintain for my wife rather easily (don't know the iPhone really but don't mind to getting used to it either). Also, I know of a few handy tools that could be handy for my wife

Build quality on my Vox seems great. The slider keyboard does move freely but it doesn't seem like it's going to fall apart.

The big question for me would be could she get used to typing on the virtual keyboard of the iPhone? Plenty of people say it's fine once you get used to it, but my wife cannot stand a learning curve, she wants to be able to use the thing efficiently right out of the box.

My wife and I neither of us liked to dial on the touch screen of our old Pocket PCs, so I doubt that would change with the iPhone.

For me the Vox is great because I want to be able to to most everything one handed, I want to be able to easily dial numbers, and I don't like to interact with touch screens.

I have the s710, and I recently bought an iphone. I returned the iphone and I'm sticking with the s710. Here's what I like and don't like about the iphone:

Like:
-safari is the best mobile browser out there, but I just don't need/use it enough
-it's slick and very easy to use, maybe a little too easy (not enough out-of-the-box customizability for my taste)

Don't Like:
-no mms support
-on-screen keyboard is annoying
-doesn't give you a character count as you're writing a text
-doesn't read contacts from sim (have to enter it manually)

I had my wife try an iPhone clone keyboard on my TyTN in landscape mode. She could handle it ok but is used to a (fold open) keyboard on her Nokia.

Don't think she'll do a lot of websurfing, mostly email or texts. MMS would be nice but not a requirement.

My wife doesn't really need unlimited dataplan (GPRS), as she could do email via WiFi. However, the iPhone plan (unlimited data+200 texts) is an awesome deal...

My main concern is the complexity of the WM OS and the occasional hang-ups.

A valid concern - although Smartphone/Standard is considerably simpler than Pocket PC/Professional.

Another thing: If I was continually texting or emailing all day, I think I would get annoyed with the slide-out keyboard. As it is, I tend to use it in long stretches a few times a day and it's OK. But I guess a TyTn or the Nokia foldout would be about the same, so maybe no big deal for you.
