Can't get GPS signal on 8310

Hi All,

I picked up my 8310 yesterday and I've gone into maps and selected the "start navigation" (while outside with no obstructions between me and the open sky) but it never finds any satellites.

So... I have some questions...

1. Do I need to sign up for the Rogers Telenav service to use the GPS receiver?

2. Where is the GPS receiver located on the 8310 (so I know how to position the BB to get a clear view of the sky)?

3. Has anyone else managed to get a GPS signal with their 8310?

Thanks,

Dan.

You need a dataplan for either BB Maps or Google Maps. They are constantly downloading sections of the map as you move.

As for GPS, make sure your carrier hasn't disabled the GPS function. If not, you need to be outside with a clear view of the sky. Locate yourself on a map, either BB Maps or Google Maps, general location is adequate (same city) and then select Start GPS and give it some time to locate you. This could take 5 minutes or longer, depending upon where the dive was when GPS was last activated.

$10/mo is a subscription fee to use the Telenav application. For Telenav you pay that monthly to use their service and you receive the audible turn by turn directions. You can use BB Maps or Google Maps there are no subscription fees to use those services, it only uses data where as Telenav uses your data and charges you a monthly subscription fee. That said keep in mind that BB Maps and Google Maps will not give you audible turn by turn alerts.

I have an 8820 and am using BB maps just fine with no subscription fees. The GPS aquires a signal very quickly, usually in about 15 to 20 seconds. I had a nokia E90 and it took forever to get a signal. One thing that was very cool about the nokia though, is that you could store all your maps on the memory card. I had a 4 gig card and had all maps for all of the north american, europe and parts of asia.

Alright just to clarify, if I buy the 8310 I can download Google Maps, and receive on-screen turn-by-turn directions (with no audible direction) for free?

You will NOT get turn by turn on the screen. You will get something akin to mapquest directions or the map. One or the other. It isn't true turn-by-turn.

Not safe when driving as you need to be paying attention to driving and lokking at the BB at the same time.

Alright thank you for the clarification. The post (quoted below) confused me a bit. I assumed this meant the Blackberries could utilize maps from another source, such as Google Maps, and use the phone's GPS ability to "follow along" the map as you go, such as when following directions.

The 8820 can use the maps in google maps, and supposedly there is a live search app as well, but I can not get it to load on my BB. I dont have any subscription and mapping works fine.
