LG VX8350 ringtone

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I currently have the test version of bitpim but it is unable to connect to my new VX8350 phone. Does someone know how to modify/access the locked folder?

Posted by: BravoIsMyName

I have the newest version of Bitpim, and the 8350 isnt offered on there yet. I've emailed em about it. I hear the 9900 is the closest thing to it. But that isn't really working for me either. Hmm....Phone ahead of its time? Or bitpim is being very late.....

Posted by: hbrocks

Same problem here....
can't seem to get bitpim to work with my 8350.
Suxor!

Also....I have a new SD card but I'm not certain how to use it to transfer anything. *sigh*

Posted by: intranuclear

There are 3 ways to transfer data to the SD card, but first put it in your phone then go to the SETTINGS & TOOLS / 8. Memory / 3. Card Memory and choose 1. Format from Options. This will create the directories that the phone will use. These directories need to remain flat, that is, don't create subdirectories in them. At this point, you can either use an LG PC USB connector, which you can buy cheap under $10 or use the USB shell if your SD card came with it (mine - Sandisk 4GB card came with it). You can then simply copy say MP3 files into the My Music directory in the card - remembering not to create subdirectories. The phone is pretty smart, and when you go to the "GET IT NOW" menu option and select 1. Music & Tones, it will automatically add any new music files to the music library.

Posted by: hbrocks

Thanks for the reply and the info.
Phone can now see the card and the directories.....and now I know (thanks to u) how to access the music.

I've also played around with and figured out how to convert my MP3's to usable ringtones with Bitpim....then email them to myself or family members to use!

I have added files to the my music file by inserting the sd card in the computer (after it was correctly formatted) and my music does not show up still. What am I doing wrong? Do they files have to be certain sizes or labeled (id'd) differently

-J

Posted by: Associatedj

Is there certain limits to this? None of my music shows up for use.

Posted by: mjf10

I have an LG VX8350 and it is seen by BitPim if you tell BitPim that you have an 8550 - since 8350 is fairly new it wasn't in the list yet. Is is under "Edit" and then "Settings" in BitPim. You also need to make sure you have the necessary drivers installed for the phone before you plug it in to your computer. The drivers that your computer needs are not a part of the BitPim software. My drivers came on a "phone tool" disk I bought on eBay along with the USB connector that I needed to connect my phone to the computer. When you plug your phone into your computer you should get an alert that you have plugged in the device and it should also show show up as a USB device in your System Tray. If it doesn't then you do not have the right drivers installed or they have not been installed correctly.

rules:
No subdirectories/folders, .mp3's go directly into the "my_music" folder.
No special characters in the filenames (~+[},etc.)
Filenames can not be over 36 characters or the mp3's will not show up.
DRM (digital rights management)-encoded mp3's have issues sometimes, you need to re-encode the songs without DRM.
The phone sometimes has problems with IDv.3 tags, change them to IDv.1 tags for the songs to work.

Format memory in the 8350. Put card into PC via usb cardreader. Transfer short not more than 30 second mp3 ringtones into MY SOUNDS. Put card in phone. From Options on phone in MY SOUNDS choose SEND to your own phone number when it appears as message save in RINGTONES. SABBAH

When you send the .mp3 ringtone to yourself like that it gets converted to .qcp format and loses considerable sound quality. Not to mention the fact that it costs .25¢ every time you do this if you don't already pay extra for the picture messaging package.

Why not just get a USB cable and use BitPim??? It works GREAT with the VX8350 for ringtones, wallpapers, contact list, etc. etc. and it's SO easy. USB cables are dirt cheap on eBay and BitPim is free. You can use it an unlimited number of times and most cables will charge your phone's battery using the USB power while you do it.

And why take your card out of the phone to add sounds? With a USB cable you don't have to. You just set the phone to USB Mass Storage mode and click and drag the pics, sounds, and videos right onto the card.

One trick I like to do is if I'm on a ringtone website and I preview the tones and I like one, rather than buying it I just go to my temp internet files folder and find the .mp3 and then use BitPim and a USB cable to put it on my VX8350.

Here's one of my fav rintones for ya. It's the doorbell sound from Star Trek TNG. I had to add a few seconds of silence to the end of it because the 8350 rings differernt from the 8300. On the 8300 I would hear the tone then silence before it played it again. Not so with the 8350 it doesn't pause before playing the ringer again so with a short ringtone it just plays it over and over really fast. So anyway this one work good on the 8350:

here's a couple more of my favs:

http://rapidshare.com/files/62566035/CrazyFrogIndia.mp3
http://rapidshare.com/files/62173748/Ringring.mid

Please feel free to post your favs here. I'm always looking for new ones. I don't so much like songs as ringtones. I'll post some more here later.

I like to find cartoon soundbytes (like the old looneytunes) and save those.
Yosemite Sam is always pretty good!

Posted by: MaPMaKaR

Hey that sounds really cool! I don't have any Yosemite Sam ringtones yet... that would be cool! or Porky Pig! or Bugs!

Hello everyone, so glad I found this forum, looks like just the info I'm needing I have a new LGVX8350 and I want to create and load my own ring tones on my phone. This looks like the right thread.

I have been reading along, I have downloaded BitPim, I still have to buy a data cable. I have a Blue tooth PC adapter and tried to see if BitPim would find the phone with that, but I didn't have any luck. OK so I tell Bitpim my phones a 8550. I downloaded ring tone software, Magix Ring tone Maker 2, and I have Audacity too. I think I can figure out how to make the ring tones,. what size should I limit the ringtone to by the way??

I'm still not clear on how you get them to the phones Ring tone menu. I know you can attach them to text messages and send them to yourself and save them and they got to the ring tones, but as MaPMaKaR pointed out, that's not the best way to go. So MaPMaKaR please explain exactly how you get the ring tones on your phone?

1.

I'm still not clear on how you get them to the phones Ring tone menu.
2.

1. Most people limit the length to about ~30sec@128bitrate
for ringers without BitPim:
<250kb for emailing/SMS without conversion to .qcp (no conversion by Verizon)
250-500kb for emailing/SMS with conversion to .qcp (automatic, by Verizon)

You can use any size .mp3 file for a ringtone if you use a cable or BT connection and BitPim

2. I would use your BT connection (pair phone with PC, *use serial connection in "my BT places"). Then use the "filesystem" tab in BitPim to load ringtones into the correct directory. (mr?).. (sorry not sure what it is on an 8350 ..maybe.?-->brew/16452/lk/mr<--?

hmmmm
I've only had good results with using my PC's email to send myself the ringtones.
I do however use bitpim to convert mp3's to a usable size!

Next up is I want to find a good mp3 of a rooster so I can use that for some alarms on my phone!

here are some .WAV files that you could D/L and convert to .mp3 with Musicmatch Jukebox, Audacity or SUPER (all free)

You can't move ringtones from the card to the phone. Sounds, pix, and flix, yes but not ringtones.

You can't add a ringtone to the phone using BitPim with bluetooth. Sounds, pix, and flix, yes but not ringtones.

You can send a sound to yourself in a pix msg then save as ringtone. This works but an .mp3 or .mid will get converted to .qcp and the sound quality will become seriously degraded.

You need a USB cable, drivers, and BitPim to add ringers to the phone. It works great if you manually set the Phone Type in BitPim to VX8550. If you get an error that says that says, "Access to the file/directory has been blocked on this phone by the phone provider" then just try it a second time and it will work.

Just use BitPim's GUI to add ringtones then then send them to the phone. It's easy and it works great. (If you hold the shift key when you click on the add ringtone button it will bypass the edit function.)

READ the BitPim "how to" there is good info in help that you miss if you don't read it.

I try to keep them as small as possible. I tried one over 600K last night (by accident) and that one didn't work to well but I havn't really tested to find out the max size.

I don't know why ppl on here make it so complicated trying to use bluetooth to put ringtones on the phone. It really quite easy WITH A USB CABLE AND BITPIM.

I have a lot of fun making new ringtones for mine and my wife's 8350 all the time.

Hope that helps.

Ok MaPMaKaR, Im still needing help here. How exactly did you set your USB mass storage mode? I got my cable, and with much effort was able to cypher how to add ringtones, yaaaaaaa. No easy task, but determination pays off!! And I'm 50 and my kids wouldnt even try this, so the rest of you have no excuses.

MapMaker and others:

Glad to hear that the Pics / FLIX and Tones data transfers work with BitPim on the LG VX8350.

I'm thinking about getting the 8350 and my first concern is how to upload 300+ contacts to the Phone Book. My (Verizon) RAZR got laundered, so I have to use my PC Backup of my contacts to load a new phone.

Have any of you been able to transfer / edit / upload your phone books on the 8350 using BitPim? I would prefer not to gamble with DataPilot software if I don't need to.

Thanx !

Posted by: Runfox

BAZFONE I had all my contacts transfered from my old Moto to my LG when I bought it. I did see my contacts in BITPIM, and was able to edit /add them to my new LG phone. I would imagine it would be very easy to transfer all your contacts from PC to phone with BITPIM. Download BITPIM and look it over, look through the HELP sections and you should be able to see how it works before you try it.

Thank you ALL for your postings and encouragement. I had not been using VZ's backup assistant and my RAZR was destroyed by a trip thru the washer. I had 300+ Contacts backed up on my PC. Here is what my path to success with PC to VX8350 data transfer has been:

- I bought the Music Downloading Kit from Verizon which gets you a 1st rate Powered Cable (can charge phone while connected), the Windows drivers required, WMP 11 if you need/want it, and a wired stereo headset for the LG phones. VZ gave me 50% off with my phone upgrade so this came to $16.10 including tax, and the phone upgrade was free. (No downloadable drivers for the 8350 are available yet at the common driver sites like humpa.com)

- Read the excellent BitPim instructions posted by "5150" at:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1037702
Scroll down to the middle of this thread and you'll see the screenshots etc. with step-by-step instructions on using BitPim to move files on/off your phone.

- I downloaded the latest (Test) release 1.0.3.20071126 of BitPim in hopes that a profile for the new VX8350 would be available (not yet)

- With the VZ provided cable and drivers, getting the PC "connected" to the phone was trivial. In under 30 minutes, I'd transferred my Ring Tones and Wallpaper photos to the VX8350. Also confirmed that I can move pictures from the phone to the PC. No sweat - just drag and drop in both directions.
(I was not playing w. Music files to the SD Card - just Ringtones & Pix to phone memory)

NOTE: BitPim "detected" that my phone was a VZ9900. Doesn't work -- you have to manually set the phone type to VZ8550 in the BitPim Settings dialogue as MapMaker suggests in this forum.

In under 10 minutes, I retrieved the six contacts I'd keyed into the phone, then exported them to a CSV file so I could look at the field names and field structure using MS Excel to edit the CSV file.

- Now here was the really time consuming part:
My backup was in an MS Excel file created by Moto Phone Tools from my RAZR. I pasted column by column into the new file (with the LG 8350 header names in top row) to move the data into the format required for the new LG phone. BitPim is very fussy about getting the CSV file structure "right" before an import to BitPim is successful. (we're not talking to the phone yet -- this is just to get the data into BitPim) Here's what I had to do to keep BitPim from reporting Exception errors on the File Import.

a) I never got a "replace" to work. I had to take out the six contacts that were already in the phone and do a "merge" to add just the new stuff. (you'll see these choices on the Import dialogue)

b) Each Phone number uses three columns in the CSV -- the number itself, the number type (cell, home, office, fax etc.), and a speed dial location for that number. When you READ the data from the phone, it will have the your speed dial #s in this field, however, using the VX8550 profile, I never got BitPim to WRITE the speed dial info to the phone. Had to go back later and designate the Contacts I wanted for the "one-touch" speed dials using the phone keyboard.

c) I observed that BitPim did not retrieve / maintain some other info like which phone number for a contact was the "default". Again, could be fallout of no dedicated BitPim profile for the VX8350.

d) New Phone List "Categories" ("groups" in 8350-speak) can't be created by BitPim, but I was able to import the group name field as long as it already existed on the phone. I do believe that there is some kind of limit to # of contacts in a single group because I can't add any more contacts to some of my Groups when I'm using the phone. The phone just ignores your "OK" button when trying to assign another contact to an existing group with a bunch of other numbers already in the group.
Unfortunately, VZ Backup Assistant does not expose the Group Field, so adding members to a "full" group means going back to BitPim.

e) When I finally got the import file clean enough for BitPim to import it, (3-4 hours of screwing around here), BitPim finally imported it without an exception error. Then I had to deal with a few records that the "merge" function did not handl correctly. Read BitPim help. Wasn't hard, just tedious and time consuming.

NOTE: LG Phones maintain a unique ID for each phone record. This is usually a good thing as it makes sync'ing more reliable, but in this context, you have to be careful about re-typing data into the same relative file location as you end up with new data associated with the "old" unique ID. Read BitPim help notes on the LG8550 for more info).

f) FINALLY I had all the new contacts into BitPim and I hit "send to phone" - and it promptly blew up BitPim. (it is 4am by now) I re-started BitPim, re-set it to "VX8550" for phone type, and saw that BitPim had saved the data on the PC hard drive, so I did not have to "re-import" it from the CSV file. Whew ! A 2nd punch of the "send to phone" button brought up the dialogue box where I selected "Phonebook" and guess what -- it sent data, then told me that the directory was blocked by the Provider.

Per advice on the forums, I hit the send button again (before the 3 sec timeout) and again got the "Blocked by Provider" dialogue after a few seconds. I ignored it, unplugged the phone, power-cycled the phone and THERE WERE MY 300+ CONTACTS !!

IN CLOSING:
It is un-believable that Verizon's lame policies of closed products cause users so much wasted time. Despite the 6+ hours I wasted on this, it was still simpler and more accurate than trying to type in contacts from the phone's keyboard. It will be interesting to see if yesterday's announcement will actually result in data sync products that are simpler to get and use.

I believe that when BitPim has native support for the VX8350, things will go smoother. The key step is getting the format of the CSV file to be imported correct. This is not documented as far as I could see. One has to export a file from the phone and study it. (Delete the columns that are not used by the 8350 like First_Name, Last_Name, Nickname etc. Only import fields being used -- to see which ones those are, key in a couple contacts and put data in every field available on the Phone's new-contact screen. Then export it and study it.)

Good Luck !!

Posted by: illus

It pisses me off to no end when I try to send stuff to a person's phone and then I get that message saying the access to the directory has been blocked. They really need to stop that.

I'm not sure where you got the idea that bluetooth won't allow you to upload ringtones. I followed your directions, except used bluetooth connection instead of usb cable, and it worked fine for me.

Posted by: Runfox

desertfox44 you must have figured something out , cause I tried it with my bluetooth portable device, I was able to sysnc my phone with my PC but couldn't figure out how to transfer anything with it. I had to finally use the data cable to transfer info.

Posted by: desertfox44

Idk I just set my cell phone to "discovery mode" then synced it to my laptop. Then I used bitpim, selected the appropriate port and it worked as if I had connected a usb cable.

Posted by: Bobdole321

Ok, I've tried the manual way 6 times now on BitPim, and everytime it says that the directories are blocked. Is there any way around that?

Posted by: Psychodog123

Seems the newest bitpim recognizes the vx8350.

Code:
bitpim-1.0.3.20071206-setup.exe

Temporary Link
http://www.sendspace.com/file/b3tprd

I have yet to figure out how to make the phone recognize ringtones from the sd card. I also have updated the phonebook from a vx8300 to a vx8350. Added ringtones through a usb wire directly to the phone memory for now. Hoping someone will figure out a way to get the sd card method to work soon.

Posted by: alexanderdw

Thanks everyone for all your help. I have actually managed to create my own ringtones. You have no idea what a big thing that is for me as I manage to crash my computer on a regular basis and barely know what all the crap is on my phone. *g*

Posted by: jamnmon66

I've been surfing through the forum about moving .mp3s over bluetooth and one of the posts suggested that the problem isn't with bitpim or the phone but it's with the bluetooth connection itself. I've had reliability problems with my bluetooth connection to the phone and this theory seems to make sense. Maybe some bluetooth adapters work better with this phone than others. I plan to buy a bluetooth adapter, I just haven't had a chance yet.

If you loose your connection, the quick solution is to disable bluetooth on the phone and then re-enable it. That fixes it temporarily but not good enough to copy files over like we want.

Posted by: stratojava

Likewise, I can't get Ringtones on the SD card - or I should say... I can't get the phone to recognize files put on the SD card as ringtones. Bitpim is great - and I can get ringtones on the phone like that no problem. But it's such a waste to have a 4GB SD card sitting there unutilized while I try to squeeze ringtones onto some 20 to 30 MB of available phone memory... what a waste!

Has anybody been able to do this? Thanks.

Posted by: noaklen

Well...I have teh new Bitpim and thank god, the same problem (blocked by provider) is still an issue. I normally use ringers that are about 1400kb+ in size, but in order to get a ringer to the phone via bluetooth before the phone blocks you, it hasta be under 310-320kb. I highly doubt it has anything to do with the quality of one's BT connexion.

Posted by: NYCDrew

This driver worked perfectly for my eBay noname USB cable for my VX8350. BitPim 1.0.4 found my phone, no problem.

I am a newbie in the wonderful world of Howard Forums (LOVE this site!) and have been reading as much as possible on trying to get my ringtones onto my VX8350.

I have the latest beta of BitPim (bitpim-1.0.5.20080114) and the necessary drivers for the phone. It is recognized by BitPim, no problem.

My question is...
What folder am I supposed to load the .mp3 ringtone files I have created? The only description I could find so far was for a different LG phone and the folder suggested (16492, I think) doesn't even exist on my phone. Also, once they are ON the phone, what is the exact procedure I need to follow to have the phone recognize and install them as ringtones? (If I am repeating earlier posts, I offer my sincerest apologies and will chastise myself thoroughly for the discrepancy!)

As I stated earlier, I am new at this and ask for your uderstanding , your patience , and an answer!

Thanks in advance for any assistance that can be given.

Posted by: Psychodog123

if you are tryin to load them onto an sd card? There still hasnt been a confirmation of the vx3850 reading ringtones from the card. Otherwise, just use bitpim to load ringtones directly to your phone. If you have any troubles/questions.. lmk

Posted by: WoofEWolf

Thanks, Psychodog123, for the response.

Since my post I think I have been able to figure out which folder in my phone the .wav files are to be placed to utilize them as ringtones. They are showing up under "brew/mod/10889/ringtones" (the folder I used) but they are also showing up under "mmc1/my_sounds". Would the "mmc1" location be the files on the SD card? I DO have my personally created ringtones working, it would just be helpful to know WHICH of these is the correct folder to use!

To answer your question, I did try to load them onto an SD card and have apparently had no success at getting the phone to reconize their existence. I formatted the card, set the phone to "USB Mass Storage" and drag/dropped the files into the "My Sounds" folder that was created (this is why I make the assumption the "mmc1" folder is the SD card).

Seems the files being used as ringtones are being read from the phone's internal memory, though. Is there a definitive answer to whether the VX8350 can read the SD card files? And if so, HOW!?

Posted by: Runfox

WoofEWolf Welcome to HowardFourums the best cell phone site and the right place for answers. I was a newb also and found what I needed here so be patient and you'll get it.

I was espesually happy when I finally got my ringtones on my phone, as my young electronic wiz kids couldnt even do it with their LG phones.

I have the same phone and went through this myself. First you need to get your phone to access your micro SD card, when it does for the first time it will create folders on it that the phone can access. It will create my_music, my_sounds, my_videos, my_pictures and last but most important my_ringtones. Once you have those folders on your micro SD card you can transfer pictures, and ringtones to these folfers with Bitpim. Using Bitpim you will select the ringones to tranfer and then hit update and they should transfer to the appropriate folder on your card.I have transfered directly to the card and to the card in the phone via sync cable,

Posted by: WoofEWolf

Hey, thanks, Runfox! I really do appreciate your answer.

I have done the things you describe and everything transfers to my phone from BitPim with no problems. I used the "My Sounds" folder to store the .mp3 files, however, because the phone didn't create a folder called "My Ringtones" on my SD card. I would have used that folder to store the files if it had been there.

Do I need to manually create this folder? Will doing so cause problems with the phone? (I just LOVE doing this stuff! )

Posted by: Runfox

WoofEWolf, OK let me correct that. The phone creates folders for music, sounds, and pictures but not ringtones, Of course they want you to buy thiers so they dont make it easy.
To get ringtones to the phone1) use software such as Audacity to create your ringtones, read through the previous posts to find length size limitations, 2) Bitpim willl detect the items on your phone, one item will be "ringers". When you have your ringtone, click the "add ringer" musical note up top, then once your done 3) Hit Data - Send data to phone. It will send the ringtone to ringers, where you can now click on that and see the ringer on your phone. Whne you open your phone and get ringtones it will be there batta-bing-batta-boom!

Posted by: WoofEWolf

Greetings, all.

I want to thank Runfox once more for his input on the "how to" info. My apologies for the length of time it has taken me to respond! I have successfully installed all my personally-created ringtones and it is GREAT to be able to have this phone the way I want it to be.

NOW! ..... can ringback tones be added to this phone? LOL

Posted by: spencar

I don't like this phone because the old vx8300 let you put a different text ring for each person, but this one dont'. You only have one choice to fit all the people. That part sucks!!!!!!!!

spencar I dont know what your problem is? I have different ringtones for different people. Once you get the ringtones on the phone the rest is easy. You can got to your ringtones and then assign them to people or go to your contacts, edit them and assign ring tones there, either way it's easy.

No, I can do the ringtones, but you can't set a different TEXT ringtone for each contact.
If you edit each contact, it only lets you set ringtones for them. On the vx8300 it would also have a place to set a different TEXT ringtone for each contact. So you could have a different ringtone and TEXT ringtone for each contact.

How? I tried to move a ringtone from my card, which I put in my music folder, and it only moved it to phone memory.

I love BitPim even though it doesn't work with my 8350 under Vista (more on that in next message)

Regarding the above question, your wording suggests you were able to move a ring tone to "phone memory". That is the goal we all seek because ring tones are only played from phone memory, not card memory. Besides the features of manipulating the phone book, one of BitPim's biggest features most others report is the ability to move files like ring tones to internal phone memory. I can't verify that for the 8350 since BitPim doesn't work for me under Vista. But it did with our beloved but aging 6100's we just replaced. So, it sounds like you already solved the biggest problem.

1. So, if you did not use BitPim, how did you move a ring tone from the PC to "phone memory"? If you did use BitPim, then that is what it is for. If you want to only want to move files to MicroSD card, then you don't need BitPim. No matter how you do it, many have found their 8350 will see and use all media files EXCEPT rings tones on the MicroSD card.

2. 8350 doesn't play user card ring tones:
The 8350 will not play ring tones on the MicroSD "user" card - only those in phone memory and the phone doesn't let you move the tones from the card to memory. They want you to buy ring tones or force you to send them to yourself for the cost of a message and loss of quality.

3. Software not needed to move files to MicroSD card:
If you only want to move any media files (sounds, pix, videos, etc) from PC to MicroSD card, you do not need any software. Do as follows:
3a. Move files without software or cable:
Insert new MicroSD card in phone. It auto-formats immediately.
Move formatted card to a reader on PC - it appears as a drive.
Copy files to folder on card - don't make new or rename folders.
WMA/MP3 names must be < 33 chars. Plain chars. Space, comma, dash OK.
Put card back into phone. You are DONE!

3b. Using supported USB cable/driver:
Connect phone with supported USB cable and LG driver.
MicroSD card appear as a removable PC drive
Copy files to desired folder, you are done!

I have an 8350, and like all, have tried the PC to phone transfer for ringtones...no such thing.
Having nothing better to do, I sent Verizon an email, asking
why they continue to block this effort. I was polite, but to the
point. My argument to Vz, is this, Ford, does not require me
to put Ford parts in my Mustang, neither does RCA require
me to put RCA parts in my TV, etc. I know of no other company that holds their customer hostage in this regard.
The gist of their reply, was this: It is done to assure quality
of the music available to us. There are many sites used by Vz
that must pass their muster, to qualify for download via
Get It Now. they failed to mention the fees they cheerfully
charge for this "service".
In my reply, to their reply, I pointed this out, as well as the fact that I am more than willing to be responsible for
my own actions / downloads to my phone. The phone belongs to me, also, not Vz. I also pointed out that I can upload music to my phone memory or card, and have no quality or other problems. The only difference in the ringtone music and memory music is the fee.
I am awaiting the 2nd response.
Everyone needs to do the same, put on the pressure & "maybe" we can get this greedy policy changed.
It's all about the money, which I also stated in my response.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Rattle their cage!

I think the question that is so often asked is how can you move a ring tone from the PC to the phone WITHOUT having to text it to yourself which costs money each time and reduces the quality.

The answer to that question is, as far as I have heard and tried, is you can't using the phone's built in features. Verizon's LG command set only allows the assignment to contacts (and to defaults) of ringtones and call-ID pictures that reside within the phone's internal memory - but not of those on the removable MicroSD memory card.

Although there is a media move command within the phone, it does not seem to apply to those two types. The reason is simple: Recent financial news reported that the selling of ring tones, pcitures, and text messages is now a multi-BILLION dollar industry as of Q4-2007.

However, contrary to what some here have suggested, the ability to move ring tones and ID images to internal memory is NOT PREVENTED or LOCKED. It just requires different software than what is in the phone to accomplish the transfer.

Using external software like freeware BitPim program allows you to move a picture or ring tone to the phone in the proper manner so it is immediately recognized and available to use for defaults or contact ID's. I just posted a rather long article in the thread BitPim and the VX8350 about how I managed to get BitPim 1.06 working with the Verizon USB cable under Vista, if that helps. It works perfectly and quickly.

In a nutshell, to install your own custom ring tones or ID pictures:For those new to Bitpim, BE SURE to import all of the phone's data to BitPim BEFORE you start modifying the local copy and sending it back - obvious but easy to overlook when you are burnt out!

Hope that helps.

Okay I am sure I am repeating someone here...but I will give it a whirl anyway. I just received the Verizon music essentials, installed the drivers, plugged in the phone and it connected. But it connected as a modem. I can see the phone under devices as a modem, and under ports as com port 11 (or 9 or wherever). I also installed bitpim. But when I went to bitpim to get the test picture I had loaded on the SD card, it did not show up. Question is...should i see the phone as a device like a separate drive (like the C: Driive or D: drive)...you know...a removable device? Or is it always going to show as a modem?

There are actually 3 drivers I noticed that are installed. They are listed in the loading success dialog that appears at the end of the install. One of those three is a driver that connects the phone in a way that amkes it appear as a type of modem connected via the USB cable. It's not a real modem.

See my last message about NOT using "Driver Only" option on Music Essentials. The Install Software has a better driver loader but loads the software too -- which you can simply ignore. Software, like BitPim, then communicates with the phone like it is a modem on the COM# port assigned by the driver. That is normal.

BitPim is a general tool that tries to accommodate many phones. As such, the interface can be confusing since many displayed features do not work with many phones. Only the basic features work on most phones like the Phone Book, Ring tones, and Wallpapers. Those were the original key feature set of BitPim. Newer features like SD card access, videos, etc, are not supported on all phones,

When the latest BitPim is used with the vx83350, it seems to me that the SD card functionality is not working. There are no transfer options on the Get/Send menu to deal with the SD nor are there any to deal with Music. If you add music to the BitPim database folders for Music or Music (sd), it doesn't trasnfer those objects to the phone. I guess it just stays in the database. However, after the next Get Data from Phone is run, they seem to be are removed from the database.

However, to work with the SD card you do NOT need to (or should) use BitPim. Although BitPim 1.x shows "(sd)" folders, the do not work (for me, at least) with the vx8350.

Just set the phone into USB Mass Storage mode by selecting (Settings / Tools / USB Storage). You can the see the SD card directly like any other memory using Windows Explorer. It appears as a removable drive so can move files between the PC and the phone. Just don't change or delete the folders on the card. Also be sure you 1st format the card in the phone so it will create the proper folders. Then just move your music from the PC to the My Music folder on the card.

ONLY when you set the phone into USB Storage Mode as noted above. When it is in that mode, you cannot use BitPim. The program will not connect. Use Windows Explorer to transfer your files to the appropriate folder on the card.

Summary: The vx8350 likes traditional objects (Contacts, Wallpaper, Images and Ringtones) to reside in internal memory and recognizes music on the SD card. So the preferred transfer methods are:

Phone Book ... BitPim <-> Internal
Wallpaper, Images, ID Pictures ... BitPim <-> Internal
Music ... USB Mode ... PC <-> SD Card

Perhaps future versions of BitPim will allow access to the SD card folders that it now displays but doesn't access. I don't know.

Hope that helps

Using the /dload/myringone.dat from my 8300 and using it to replace the /dload/myringtone.dat on my 8350, i was able to access and use ringtones from my microsd card as if they were in the phone's memory.

one caveat though. once you restart the phone, you can't access the microsd ringtones through the menus. however, if you have assigned a contact with a microsd ringtone, it will continue to use it.

If this conversation is about Windows, then it should be noted for Vista users that, if you are using the cable from the Verizon "Music Essentials" kit that bundles an SD card, USB cable, and earphones, the drivers which are loaded when you use the "Install Drivers Only" option don't seem to work correctly. XP users might also benefit from the following.

Instead, I chose the Install VCast Music Manager option on the included CD which is nothing more than a URL to Verizon's site to download the latest drivers *and* VCast Manager software. That will first install the latest correct drivers for Vista and then install the VCast Manager software which is decent if you also want to load music files at some time. Although you cannot bypass the software installation, it is not that large and you simply not use it if you do not need it - but it's worth a look. It automatically controls the phone for you without having to shift it into USB storage device mode to load your music library.

I use both BitPim v1.06 for phone book maintenance, pictures, and ring tones and the VCast manager for music files. Although my issues were with Vista, it might be advantageous to go the same route with XP to ensure the latest drivers are installed.

I am not sure what you mean by that. The VX8350 shows up in my BitPim v1.06 phone selection list (and also find it automatically). I thought I also saw it in the v1.05 phone list but I could be be wrong.

There's no need to directly fondle the Brew file system. Simply use BitPim's standard object folder tree in the left window pane to select Media / Ringers. This also allows you to use the BitPim's automatic music conversion and importation functions. You only need to access the Brew file system directly if you want to bypass BitPim's conversion applet completely such as when you feel want to handle the creating of correctly formatted ring tone music files yourself.

Since the audio quality of ring tones suffers greatly going through a cell phone speaker, I have less concern over things like bit depth and sample frequency. The only tweaking I now do with ring tone music files is to trim the original source music file down to the correct section and length then boost the volume to max. I have Sony's excellent but pricey SoundForge but the free open-source Audacity editor is also quite good for things like this. After editing the source music file, I use BitPim to convert and import the file. 1) Right-click the Ringers folder content area, 2) click Add, 3) select your file, 4) click Convert, 5) click OK. You're done.

I've followed this thread through with some interest. I recently "upgraded" (whether it counts as such remains to be seen) from my VX8300 to a VX8350. I can connect to the new phone using Bitpim over Bluetooth and can see the file system as well as the standard files. I have several sound files in both mp3 and qpc format. I have dropped them into the Sounds, Music, and Ringtones folders on the Bitpim GUI and they don't show. Likewise when I trawled the file system and found sound files and tried dropping them there (after backing up of course).

In every case the new ringtone fails to show up in the Ringtones menu. They do appear in the My Sounds menu, and I can text them to myself but I see no other means to set the ringtone.

It looks like Verizon is happy to allow us to add ringtones -- for a price. Could it be that the newer version of the VX8350 is more crippled than the older ones?

Adding ringtones over bluetooth was problematic even with the older phones. If you've read this tread then you've no doubt read the best advice... GET THE CABLE!

Adding ringtones using BitPim with a USB cable is a snap but YOU CAN NOT ADD RINGTONES using bluetooth connection. It just doesn't work. It never has.

With my 8100 I had to use a cable.
With my 8300 I had to use a cable.
I still use a cable with my 8350 and it works GREAT!

Ah but I beg to differ...there is such an option in the VX8350..you go to sounds pick your sound then look in your lower right hand corner where it says OPTIONS, click on it and right at the very top , your VERY first OPTION it says SEND. You click that and it takes you straight to a brand new pix message that has that sound attached to it so that it can be sent to yourself or a friend.

This is ALSO an option in the VX8300, actually right out in the open at the bottom of your list in sounds it says SEND.

AND I do this successfully on a daily basis. So I know for a fact it works. We own both phones.

Hmm I think you owe SABBAH an apology. lol

Hmmm I think not as he left out the step of selecting the tone. There is no SEND option in My Sounds unless you highlight a tone first and that is not necessarily an intuitive leap for someone unfamiliar with LG. You either need to highlight the sound, then go to the OPTIONS, or you need to go to MESSAGES and attach it like another individual suggested. Sabbah's instructions said neither while YOUR instruction are detailed and correct. You must highlight the tone the SEND, which is not the same thing. I stand by my post that you have to test your own instructions before you post if you really want to be helpful. Leaving out a single step does matter quite a bit and when someone is going through and hacking their phone, or trying to get around some of the restrictions, they are generally going to go step by step, which is what I did with Sabbah's instructions and they failed. Had I seen your instructions, I'd have been successful.

Once you get familiar with an interface, there are some automatic contextual things you imply with your instructions that are lost on the user that is learning the interface. This is a good example. I am Motorola guy, learning the LG interface and I wouldn't think of highlighting the item to get different menu options. As always, I follow the instructions exactly and there was no OPTIONS

I understand your point, what I do not understand is the rant that you made over the whole thing. Most posters that I have seen here usually question the instructions if not fully understood, and in turn those that have given the instruction do not mind going back and correcting the mistakes they might have made or instruction that was left out. There is no need to rake someone over the coals who is just trying to help because they may have left out a step in a process.
Thankfully this is not heart surgery. lol Just a bunch of kind people willing to help eachother, but some may be terrified to post any help at all even if what they know may be dead on and can be explained so that even the simplest of minds can understand it, for fear of being set out and made to look as though they intended to do someone harm.
No need to get frustrated about posts that are a little off hon, just go in search of another that works for you. I am sure if you look all through here, there are plenty that are not precise and to the point, but then again many that are. Have a good day.

Well technically, it works if you send the sound to yourself in a txt msg. Then save it as a ringtone. BUT you loose quality that way when the file gets converted. I prefer bitpim with a cable any day. I do my CALENDER in BitPim and zap it to my phone too!

I don't use BitPim for these:

If you had a cable connected right now you could put your 8350 in "mass storage" mode. Then right-click and "Save picture as" on your phone then set as wallpaper on your phone.

Yeppers I am with you on that MaP, love the bitpim for dropping the tones right into ringtones. But I still keep a ton stored in my sounds for my eight nieces and nephews and countless friends who want them sent to em.

Saw on another forum a post from Sep 1, 2008 that "Verizon upgraded their software and locked the phones down, thus making any third party software (like BitPim) useless."

This thread is great, and probably all I need to figure out how to make things work, but it's of no use if the above is true. I've done some looking here but found nothing to confirm. I literally just got the phone, so it surely has the latest software from Verizon.

Can anyone confirm if this is true for the new phones?

I just "upgraded" to a VX8350 just before Christmas and this week installed the USB driver (downloaded from VCAST) and ran BitPim. I have had NO PROBLEM adding and installing ringtones to my phone - both MP3s (shorter than 30 secs and smaller than 200KB) and MIDI files. The sound quality is MUCH better than sending the files as PIX messages.

Posted by: MaPMaKaR

We just got our third 8350 last week. BitPim works great on all three! We have all kinds of fun with ringtones!

Posted by: LG Rhythm

you said you figured out how to convert mp3s to ringtones do you thing you could e-mail me that @ millerforlife08@aol.com

Posted by: HowardNotWorthy

You don't have to convert an MP3 to a ringtone for BitPim. You just need to create an MP3 file that is less than 30 seconds long and less than 200 KB in size (for me that required saving the MP3 at 96 Kbps or so). BitPim will reconvert it whan you run it. I use CoolEdit2000 but any audio editing software can be used. Does this help?

oh ok thank you much that actually did help

  • Right-click folder area, ADD files from PC, they load into BitPim
  • Click "Send to Phone", select wallpapers and ring tones, click OK
  • Done! Transferred items appear on selection menus.

Thank you for giving a complete and correct set of instructions.

I swear I tried this exact method (I'm a long-time BitPim user) when we first got this phone, and BitPim just could not get past the "file system is locked" message. I have to assume Verizon updated the software since to loosen this restriction.

Could you possibly send me the driver you are using? I have tried at least 4 and never is a new device detected or show up on the system device list (in XP). Man, this is so frustrating just trying to get a "good" driver!
