(BJ/WM6) My open letter to AT&T/Samsung/The Wireless Community

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: nvisi0n

First off this is not a ***** and whine session like the ones I have been reading on HoFo/Cingular Forums.

To the whiners:

I have been reading people crying non-stop about the much delayed WM6 upgrade that was "promised" to you by AT&T. "This is BS" "I am going to go to Sprint" "I'm done with AT&T" Yes, those are all quotes from various posts. Grow the hell up. AT&T never promised you anything. I have had every major carrier out there with exception of Helio and have NEVER had the level of coverage/customer service as I have with AT&T. Every time I call them with an issue they remind me why I am with them to begin with. So if you want to go to Sprint go ahead, get dropped calls and sub-par coverage and be locked into using the phones they want you to use.

To AT&T/Samsung:

So your little pet project got leaked. While the leak may not have been your responsibility the fall out now is. You know there are thousands of people out now that know there is in fact a functioning version of WM6 for the Blackjack in the wild and now your customers are; for right, or for wrong - expecting it. At the very least you should keep us informed. Lets us know if it is going to get released or not. I know for a fact the RC (release candidate) build has been released to field engineers for testing. If you don't plan on letting us have it, please have the courtesy to let us know.

As far as people saying that Samsung/AT&t have nothing to gain by releasing the WM6 upgrade, I beg to differ. When a company releases something "extra" to their existing customers it speaks volumes about how they do business. I know that if a company "over-delivers" on a product they have made a customer for life. That means I am going to tell a friend who will in turn tell a friend. That is the kind of advertising that money can't buy.

Thats all for now.

Well done, nvisi0n.

Yawn - instead of anointing yourself as the self-appointed spokesperson for the "wireless community" - maybe you should spend that time a little more productively. I hear McDonalds is hiring. So when you are through writing your worthless rant to Apple about the iPhone (something tells me you have something to say about that) why not put away your 20 sided dice, leave your momma's basement and go fill out an application.

Best part of your letter is how you tell the "whiners" in the wireless community to shut up. And then, in the very next paragraph - you start whining to AT&T/ Samsung. Nice.

yeah, that was funny.

many people who even work for att have confirmed the release. you just have to wait. it's not life or death.

It sure isnt. This appears to be much more of a profound egotistical attempt at self-masturbation.

Yes, they did. They may not have promised a date, but major cell phone and pocket pc news sites carried the press release announcing the upgrades for the Blackjack, 750, and 8525. If that was not from AT&T and they had no intention of following through with it, they needed to publish a retraction. Just like any other inaccurate news article or review; by not retracting the statement, they were in fact verifying its legitimacy.

Personally, I don't understand the reason for the delay. The 'final' version of WM6 for the i600 is out and has been for a little while now. There can't really be that many bugs.

Posted by: clauretano

There's plenty of bugs in the leaked WM6 that need to be addressed before a final release. I'm not pushing for a fast release of WM6 until I know for sure said bugs are in fact fixed. AT&T just needs to for once meet a deadline. Not only did they promise a WM6 release and then internal communications were leaked with plenty of abandoned release dates, they also pushed back so much other stuff due to the friggin iPhone.

Plus I'm still waiting on the June 2007 3G release that was promised my customer service reps at FIVE Rochester, NY Cingular stores. I pay for an unlimited data package that is barely usable at the crap speeds here.

Posted by: RCcola159

AT&T isn't all that bad. They are just horrible with deadlines.

But I agree with what nvisi0n posted.

Posted by: mbranscum

I really don't think the execs at ATT will see your letter.

Posted by: RCcola159

There has to be some AT&T execs trolling around here

no execs just the tigerdirect type employees who come on to defelct all problems as something other then the real deal. IE fanboi posts about how great the network is when users have a complaint. im not saying all of them are tg type employees but i will say several are.

Now that's funny! I didn't know there were types other than 'self-masturbation.' Reminds me of a funny bit by Louis CK involving his wife and the 'saddest handjob in history.'

Nowhere in that article did I whine, I simply stated that AT&T should be more forthcoming. Nor did I appoint my self as a spokesperson, I am simply addressing the wireless community not speaking on their behalf. I actually am not a child as you point out in this posting, I am a married 29 year old that owns 2 homes, one of which my mother lives in. And Ill pass on the McDonalds job, I make a lot more then that as a sales manager/optician for the largest optical company in the world. Thanks for the personal attack though.

Thank you for the double talk, self masturbation is a redundant phrase.

Somebody @ AT&T will I cross posted this at the AT&T forums where the users have a slightly higher IQ then the majority of the posters in this thread, save kneustadt and a few others.

I think you have a good point, but just started your "address" off on the wrong foot. Making the community your seeking council with mad from the beginning is not a good way to gain their backing.

I do agree with you about just being honest. Who cares if they have problems. I'd rather them find the problems and fix them before releasing it. If they are finding problems that are setting them back, good. At least we know they are testing it throughly. I would like some information on it at least so that I'm not dragging my USB cable around with me all day on false release dates.

If your set back, just say so. At least we know something to hold us over. Perhaps a page that lists the current set of problems and a place to post comments. I wouldn't mind trying to help. It would save lots of money plus offer some feedback to the customers.

Anyway I called today and the lady said they had setbacks that made them push the release date back again. She said it'll be out but they don't know when.

I wonder if the so called set backs are really related to Mobile 6 or have more to do with added applications such as Video Calling/Share. I did not care for the apparent insider information blaming it ALL on Microsoft, as that just seems less likely at this point, and childish, they could have gotten to this point MONTHS ago if they tried harder and anticipated better. It makes you wonder even more why they are trying to blame someone else, is the truth behind the delay so negative they cannot just be honest. I think many companies still don't know how to handle the rise of the Internet and all the information sharing that goes on. I also see on these forums too often company fans putting down ALL who dare question them or ask for more information as though they are the parent and we the kids/enemy, they not only know all, and we know nothing but think we know it all. We actually know quite a bit and pay quite a bit, and just sometimes the teenager is right cause they can leave the home, take thier resouces elsewhere, especially if the communication remains so dysfuntional. I don't know a better word for what I see AT&T is doing here, as well as their relationship with Samsung, Microsoft and many of the early adoptors, who normally help them so much by spreading the good word on new technology. It may not be the case, but it appears that their attention has shifted so far to the iPhone that putting the necessary resources and focus on getting a task done is just not within their capabilities. While threatening to drop ATT may not be a proper short term response to this situation, I do think you have to take note of it, and continue to evaluate how they handle these types of situations, so that in the long term, you make a decision based upon a broader set of experiences. Many studies have shown that customer satisfaction is a much more important factor in generating revenue for the service providers than was previously understood. It does not appear that ATT has fully embraced that concept and at some point they just might learn the hard way that they should listen more to their customers, and treat all of them with respect, not just their current fair haired iPhone boys!

I too have some inside information from interaction with ATT and Samsung. There has been disagreement between them regarding the Blackjack going way back, and one common thread behind it is the timing of the iPhone and keeping a big space for it to shine. And WHO KNOWS, cause they sure are not saying, but perhaps, just maybe Samsung got the final tweaked version back from AT&T just before the deadline to put it up just before the 17th and said WTF! But no that did not happen, its Microsofts fault! SURE!

Where did you guys get these official dates? The only official thing I heard was fall, and last time I checked, it was September. Let me check again... yup, still fall.

Posted by: steva11

i got it from work.

Posted by: Kevad007

That simply is not the case! First, Mobile 6 was sent to Cingular in November 2006 as a beta for feedback and allowing an early look at its features. There are published reviews of it in November 2006. It was announced officially in Spain in Mid Feb., 2007 and at that time T-mobile among others indicated officially in a press release they would upgrade the Dash. At the large trade show in Orlando in late March, 2007, AT&T reps. told members of the press, confirmed by Microsoft reps. No official press release was ever issued by either, however, designated reps. at an official trade show for the industry designed to present the press and buyers, sellers etc. information of upcoming products advised the press in person that among other things AT&T would get the final build for the Blackjack from Microsoft on Aprox. May 25th and that it would take up to 8 weeks to tweak before allowing it to be downloaded. This info. was published by several news sources who quoted the source as being from AT&T. It was never refuted in any way by AT&T, and how could they, in early May T-Mobile released the final Smartphone version of Mobile 6 for the Dash. In additiin, how could they, on Aprox. May 28, 2007 a leaked version of Mobile 6 branded for the Blackjack & AT&T hit the Internet and many are using it. Yes it had some issues, but those should have been resolved in 4 to 6 weeks. It was widely reported and ATT confirmed to many including myself verbally in person and by phone that they would release Mobile 6 NO LATER than the last week of July, 2007. When asked why so long, why 8 weeks several ATT employees said it probably would have taken a few weeks less (release in early July) but there was a lot of distraction and shifting of man power due to the iPhone launch. In mid-June 2 ATT Corp. store managers told me ATT had advised them to tell inquiring customers that the release would be delayed "a month or two" so now it would be expected towards the end of August, to the 3rd week of Sept. (8 weeks past May 25 plus 2 months). ATT never said anything in a press release as an official date, not even "Fall", but they did tell members of the press who they know publish news various dates including Sometime in July and even stated had it not been for the iPhone launch crazyness the Blackjack would likely have gotten updated by late June or early July. Officially, as in Press Release, nothing, but we in the press speak to designated company spokespersons whose job it is to accurately give or feed info. to the press and in this case the info. of July was confirmed many ways. The Sept. 17th date was not from a press source originally, but a few web sites got off the record confirmation that the date was correct. Many att reps. recently have confirmed that the udate was planned for Sept. 17 but has to be delayed. Check it out, Its past the 17th, Fall comes next week, OFFICIALLY!

Hey does anyone know when Windows Mobile 6.0 will be out for the Blackjack?

Posted by: clauretano

I do agree that it would be awesome if they let us help bug test WM6 on the blackjack. I know dozens of us would do it for free. Hell, who aside from an 'enthusiast' will even upgrade to WM6 when they release it? nobody. Yeah, it'll maybe jumpstart sales of the blackjack for like a week or two until the Blackjack2 comes out --though if it was coming out next month, I would imagine we'd have at least some info on it..

Maybe the i620 is the Blackjack 2?? check the keypad

Posted by: RCcola159

I personally think a lot of people are going to upgrade, provided they are told about it.

If the update doesn't come out soon, I will have to hurt somebody >.>

YES !! It was a joke - everyone is SO FIRED UP !!

iPhone owners got fired up over the rather quick price drop and got a fast $100 credit announcement. Maybe getting fired up a bit over a rather simple set of improvements in a software announced in Feb. and apparently neglected and put low on the priority list gets the ATTention of some that can make a difference and we finally get some effort and results. You can do nothing if you like or don't care, that is your decision. Meantime, I would like to see them proceed with the upgrade fixing old bugs, adding a few features in Mobile 6 and getting a few new applications from ATT. I would prefer they do it sooner than later, but either way I still am getting great benefits from my Blackjack. Let's see what happens on Sept. 25th, maybe nothing but I just am getting a joke of a "vision" that will be the day in answer to your joke question

Posted by: player911

Maybe WM6 will be fixed by Christmas. My wife said she'd wrap it up with a bow at put it under the tree. Windows Mobile Upgrades really brighten any occasion.

Posted by: Kevad007

Maybe AT&T will whip something really big and fantastic out with this update, and Christmas will come 3 months early!

True, but keep in mind two things... 1) the $100 credit came from Apple, not at&t; 2) the iphone owners who paid the higher price really did get screwed...

Posted by: Kevad007

I agree, both are good points!

It is difficult to bring out a few counter factors because many things between Cingular/att & Samsung have been wisely kept mostly private. I will just restate that Blackjack owners were held back from getting firmware fixes to several EASY to quickly fix nagging problems, and were pushed hard to pay a $40 PDA data plan, including a late decision to remove WiFi, to access a 3G system we were led to believe was Rolling out ASAP, only to find battery problems due to the spotty 3G, and that even living in major Populations more than half the time we only get Edge for our extra money. Then if you try and use a lesser plan or connect your phone as a modem now and then they send folkes in here to yell at you and say no no no you cannot do so. Meantime, almost a year later I still get Edge half the time but pay $40 a month for data and not one update to fix a bug has come out. The least ATT could do at this point is release this update already to group of folkes who essentially paid to beta test their early 3G system. Maybe tomorrow will be the day to show us some good will too.
