Sony Ericsson w580i restocked on Premier Website

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So, Im not sure how many others checked the Premier website today, but the Sony Ericsson w580i is back in stock on the Premier website for 79.99 once again. FINALLY.

I am truly puzzled by those who want this handset. Do you guys like defective phones? How about the hassle of sending it in for frequent warranty repairs? I had one for around 5 hours, before I sold it via Ebay.

It was, without a doubt, the most poorly constructed mobile phone I have ever had the displeasure of owning. The plastic felt so cheap and the slide was creaky and had major gaps all around.

This is one phone that should be avoided. I think there is a reason it's only $80.00

and still no grey w580s on premier

I bought one (unbranded) for a friend of mine who was in need of a new phone as her SE s710a was on the verge of giving up the ghost.
She absolutely loves the w580i. I told her about the possible keyboard problems and she didnt seem to care. She also loves the size and build of the phone and for the last week I have been getting nothing but good feedback from her over it.

It's personally not a phone I would use (after testing it out), but she seems to enjoy it.

My phone died while I was at Grand Lux Cafe eating lunch with some co-workers. After lunch I walked over to the Sony Style store to see what phones they had available for purchase.

I have been a Motorola guy and was curious to see what other manufacturers had to offer especially since two of my co-workers rave about the W810i. I like sliders and was attracted to the W580i which was just being put out when I arrived. I bought one fully expecting to bring it back in a day or two but have kept it for 20 some odd days now and I am really liking it.

Has any one seen the W580 at a corp store?

Moving to the regular phone subforum.

That would be a big negative.

If this phone is so bad, why all the positive reviews?

Posted by: raver0600

The phone does have a couple of bugs I'd like to see fixed, but other than that, I'm loving it! Most of the bugs regard the light effects.

Annoyances:
It's too easy to pick up / hang up a call by pressing the volume keys on the side of the phone
Phone status is buried in the menus instead of being easily navigated to by pressing the volume keys
Limited sending options after taking a picture (No option to send to bluetooth until you browse through "My Stuff")
Bugs:
Going to Walkman mode permanently changes your light effects to orange and doesn't revert back to theme settings
Light effects assigned to single contacts do not work

Posted by: MobileSlider

I really wanted to like this phone, but the flaws were too overwhelming. I love slider phones & this was gonna tide me over until the Nokia 6500 Slide release.

I did buy a SE K550i & I love it. Great little phone for the money. Solid build, although the keypad is a bit cramped. Camera is just average, but the reception is good, the aesthetics are nice, & the UI is very east to navigate.

Hopefully the W910 will be a better specimen of an SE slider.

I agree. I went from the v3xx to this phone and so far I am very happy I made the change. However, it is true about the ring lights not working. No matter which one you assign to an individual caller. all calls will still light up the default oragne/green color. Not a huge deal, but why include this feature when you can't use it.

I cannot speak for the ATT branded version of this phone but the Generic version as sold by the Sony Style store seems to work without any issues as posted by other posters.

The keyboard issues seems to have been fixed in the latest production run and the phones available at the Sony Style store should not suffer from this malady. I specifically asked the sales representative about the keyboard issue and she informed me that they had received 6 phone about 4 weeks ago and were about to put them out and were informed (by her boss I guess) to pack them back up and ship them back to XXX(I cannot remember where she said that they were shipped back too).

Not knowing if your phone was branded by a carrier or not, I am unable to recreate any of these issues with my unbranded unit sold directly by Sony.

I concur. Sold mine same day

We're not crying about it... just expressing a distaste and hesitation to pray the w580i. Don't be offended that we don't like the same phones that you do. And don't defend it as if it were made by your moms and pops, because I seriously doubt that's the case.

I think that is excellent advice, I have found the phone to be quite adequate if not above average but that does not mean that anybody else has to agree with me.

In fact I have spoken with a few co-workers who have had some bad experiences with the very same phone, although it was branded by ATT (not sure if the branding has played a role or not).

I dont see his stay at HoFo lasting too long. I feel a BAN coming on.

It's a shame that paying members like me cant "suspend" someone for posting a clearly innapropriate post, until further reviews by Admins.

Yep....

All I did was state my opinion on the phone, (which everybody does from time to time), but it musta really struck a nerve.

I wasn't trying to start a flame war, just my 2 cents.

I really like the Nokia 6500 Slide, & if everybody bashed it, I would care less. I stated my reasons for my disdain for the phone, not just blindly knocking it without reason.

This is a place where valuable info can be found, be it good or bad.

its prevalent from what ive seen so far, so i didnt buy it, flame me and you will get banned

Ah, the more reason to debrand my w580i. After the week is up, I'm definitely going to get going at getting the AT&T crap off the phone. I should have known SE wouldn't release a phone with such obvious glitches =)

I discovered a long time ago that unbranded phones sold directly by the manufacturer tend to work better than their branded cousins sold by the mobile phone carrier.

I am a firm believer that phones should be sold by the manufacturer without any additional modifications by the mobile phone carrier. Selling phones on behalf of the manufacturer is acceptable but ATT nor any mobile phone company for that matter should mess with phone as they are not the manufacturers and do not understanding the immense complexity of how the firmware interacts with the hardware to create the phone as we the end user know with it.

It is exactly why posters have reported problems with the inability to access the phone's status menu and other assorted issues. The mobile phone carrier has made modifications to the phone's firmware which has changed the way the phone operates and basically thumbs their nose at all the hard work which the engineering department put in to discover the bugs and fix them before the phone came to market. The keyboard issue was totally unacceptable and SonyEricsoon should(if they are not already) replace any defective handsets without questions, issues like that show really poor quality testing prior to market.

As I said earlier, I purchased my w580i directly from SonyEricsson at the SonyStyle store and I could not be happier with my handset. I cannot speak for other users but the unbranded unit as sold by SonyEricsson seems to be of high quality and without defects.

I also realize that I paid full price for this phone and not everybody can do that either which is why the mobile phone companies sell handsets at subsidized rates.

See my post in the w580i sticky for pictures of the keypad still cracking. I am purely speculating but I feel like that might be a reason why the phone wasn't mass released to see if the keypad is still defective. Hopefully they can solve the issue once and for all because otherwise the phone is pretty cool. The construction of the slide while open has a little play in it but I miss it already. I just can't stand having to deal with XBM every month until they just decide that it won't be replacable in a few months and I will get stuck with something completely different. I decided to pick up a k790a instead and still loving the SE goodness

And btw, the side illumination changing colors was a strange flaw. I made a custom theme and whenever I would open the Walkman app it would change back to the orange/green color scheme.

I was a bit concern about this particular phone my self because of the Keys braking or something like that, but after reading a few update articles online about that issue been taken care by SE before it been available for AT&T, I figure I would give it a try, and so far, this phone by far has been the best phone me or my wife have ever had..

Not all phones are built the same way and that should not be expected when buying differnet models and brands.. If I was to have a RAZR, why would I expect this slider to look and feel like a RAZR when is made of differnet materials.. As for that gaps??? Not sure what you mean, maybe that is part of the design, but the one we have looks good, great quality, FUUUULLLLLLL with LOOOTS of stuff that we are still learning about, but since we got it at least 3 weeks ago, is been the best thing since slice bread for us..

oooh, and the reception, maaan,,, nothing we had or currrently have beats the reception the W580i has.. Well worth it at whatever price, and to make things even better I bout it thru LetsTalk.com and only paid $16.67 <-- TAX only..

Am not sure that the one using "Your Momma" line on "MobileSlider" really is the one at fault here..

Firstable this thread is about something expecific and MobileSlider came here talking crap about the phone, when it's pretty obvious this phone has been sold out all over the place for a good reason.. MobileSlider decided to comment based on the things his heard and read about assuming that is the case or will be for every single user out there that gets this phone.. He is the one that mention the first insult provoking a responce from another member just because the other member did not like this opinion even thought MobileSlider is posting his opinions in the wrong thread.. Yeah, anyone can comment and all whenever they want, but that is why we create threads for exactly what we want, and not comeon here to provoke others when the subject is about how a phone is doing so well that is been sold out over and over and finally is back on stock..

And yes, "You moron" as he called the other user is an insult.. Too bad am not a moderator yet.. Because this would had been stoped before the other user had time to reply to first insult..

Well in my defense.....I DID own this phone for before I wrote what my personal dissatisfaction was with this mobile. I liked the phone as a whole, but the cracking keypad, coupled with the obvious poor build quality was too much.

You also say that I am basing my experience from what I have read & heard. Uh yeah, of course I am....feedback & input from other people that own the same phone is invaluable. How can you deny the fact that this phone has a MAJOR defective flaw with the keypad that has yet to be resolved?

You have had the phone for 3 weeks so far, and you are so quick to defend it?? What if the keypad breaks after 3 weeks??.....Will it not bother you?? Perhaps you like throwing you money away.....most don't

Cracked keypads have been reported in just about every mobile forum, blog, review, and personal experience I can think of. A keypad that cracks in 100 units is too many. Phones nowadays are just too expensive to be plagued with either software or build quality flaws. I am amazed that you find this kind of quality as acceptable.

People were still buying this phone up by the thousands because SE informed them that the defective keypads were fixed after production week 27. Some Internet spelunking on the subject will inform you that this is a blatant lie. There are hordes of people experiencing cracked keypads AFTER week 27. This is also happening on the SE S500 as well.

Just because it hasn't happened to you, you really see no problem with it happening to others. Just as long as YOUR keypad doesn't break....right???

I was called a "crybaby" and was told to quit *****ing about this phone. That was where the insults started. Like I said, this is place where all opinions are expressed, good or bad.

Is this really the first thread you have seen go a little "off topic"??....I hardly think so.

What he wrote about my mother only exposed himself to his maturity level, and others saw through it as well, hence Baldilocks coming to my defense. You find that kind of obscene posting MORE offensive than me talking crap about a phone?? Maybe you behave like that as well.

Also, when & where was this phone out of stock??......It was all over the web. I had no trouble locating it. It was all over Ebay.

What it comes down to is some kind of skewed "mobile camaraderie" between two people that own the same phone. I am no fanyboy and if a phone has a defect...I will call it like I see it, be it Nokia, SE, Moto or any other company, & continue to do so.

BTW....I hate to correct you on your grammar...but there is, nor will there ever be such a word as "Firstable"

Posted by: Baldilocks

I think he meant "First of all"

Yeah,, LOL..

Anyways,, MobileSlider - I'm not here to defend anything, but the fact is that the same way that some people are complaining about this PROBLEM, the majority of owners are having a blast with it.. This phone is all over my area and not once seen or heard about any problems so far with the keypad.. But if my keypad does crack, I will be coming back here to complain about it in the wrong forum..

This maybe a problems for some, but is not for the MAJORITY and IMO if someone manages to crack their key pad, that would be on the user.. No matter what the phone is made of, most people don't buy a phone to treat it like a punching bag to see if it cracks to turn around and complaint about it.. We have press the key pad hard enough on purpose to see if it gives or starts sounding like if its going to brake, and this baby still holding.. Now if I press it like If I want to gutted, then that is a different story, but am not going to do that knowing that most phones will cracked anyways under extreme conditions..

You may be here to crap all over this product due to whatever reasons, the fact is that others like it and that is why some will not agree with you.. another point is the fact that this thread is about something specific, not about bashing on a product, or to Insult those members that do not agree with your bashing.

Posted by: MobileSlider

I refer you to this thread:

http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...7&page=14&pp=15

You don't think that just a few handsets with cracked keypads is still too many?? I have phones that are 6-7 yrs. old with the keypads still intact. Why won't you admit that there is clearly a defective keypad on the S500 & W580i??

Not every person's keypad has to crack for the phone as a whole to be considered defective, & deemed unacceptable.

Posted by: paulishuku

Mobile Slider, your response to my thread was actually the main reason i changed my mind about getting it. From the CNET reviews I read about it, and all the hype it was getting I thought it might be a decent phone. I might just wait till it gets a little cheaper.

Anyways, thanks.

Posted by: MobileSlider

You are very welcome paulishuku.

I agree with you 100%. It might be good deal once it drops to around $150.00. But right now at over $300.00, it is a high price to pay, not to mention a headache should the keypad fail.

I merely wanted people to know that despite the nice looks of the phone, there is a known problem with the keypad. I am not trying to piss on anyone's parade.

Take Care.

Where is anyone paying $300.00 for this phone.. I like the phone and all, and am not going to look at it any different just because of the key pad issue that some has experienced, but at the same time with all of the cool features and all, this phone is worth some money but not 300.00

I got it for $16.67 tax only on LetsTalk.com and it only took me 2 days to get it deliver to my home..
