How to tell if your UN activated Iphone has Negative black

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Peteo

Just got back from the apple store with my second iphone swap. My first Iphone had the negative black issue, (even though the "genius" said apple says the iPhone does not have that problem only the touch does) got the new one home and noticed it has the same negative issue.

So how the heck can you see if the new iphone they give you has the negative black issue? Heres how:

Go to the apple store, let them know you have the negative black issue. Hopefully they believe you and decide to give you a new Iphone.

Before they start to enter in info for the new Iphone ask to see it first. You don't need to take off the plastic film. Boot it up. If the phone is activated and the wifi is working, connect to this forum post and check out the image.

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=358122

if its f'ed up the phone has the negative black issue.

But what if the phone is not activated or you have no wifi access.

When the phone is not activated it will have a picture of the world on the main screen. Hold down the power button. the phone should now show a red slider at the top. The world is in the back ground but shaded black.
If you cant see the clouds turn the phone side to side, you should see it sorta shimming like a negative effect and the barely see the clouds. This means the phone has the negative black issue, ASK for another phone!!! Do the same test. I did this for 2 phones and finally got one that looked good. I showed the "genius" my old phone (which was not activated) next to the new one they wanted to give me. There was no mistaking which one looked better and the guy seemed dumb founded.
Any ways if they try to tell you they can only swap once, or they cant show you every phone. Persist. Do not take a defective product.

Thanks for the post to check if your iphone has that issue. Im checking right now.

Edit: My iphone does seem to have to negative black from straight on

Posted by: Cizan

Are people not trying this out in fear that their screen might also have this issue?

Posted by: Bwhite850

that is awful picture to use, how are you even supposed to know what the picture should look like?

Upon looking at this thread, I am on the same boat. How do I get an exchange if the phone is unlock? I know I can restore it but wil apple ask me to insert my sim card to verify?

I'm wondering this myself.. I didn't unlock it just fake activated it and used my current AT&T sim. But I've got a negative black issue for sure.

Well if your in an apple store bring it up on one of the many imacs they have there. The picture is fine, you need something dark like that to view the issue

Just restore the firmwear and keep the sim in the phone. Tell them you have not activated yet. They will take the sim out and put it in the new phone. Show them the negitive world on the power off screen if they want to see the issue.

Ok guess I'll try to do that tomorrow. Thanks

peteo:

I test the phone with the earth wallpaper. Looking at it straight on, I can see just alittle of the clounds, if I tilt it side ways (2degree only) i see the clouds better.

Is that an issues or it is fine?

Posted by: paul34

I looked at it, but am still a little confused. Some people are posting pics in that thread that are kind of similar to what the picture looks like on my screen... but I'm pretty sure that is what it is supposed to look like. It's what it looks like on my LCD monitor as well, just not as bright as the iPhone screen.

But its not as severe and the people who definitely have a problem - so I guess I don't have a problem.

The globe seems like its not as good of an example as the one in the OP's link

I couldn't see the clouds on mine straight on. Only if I tilted. Now i can see them faintly. Look at it in the dark with no lights it will be easier to see.

I've looked at it again in the dark and it is pretty bad. I can't see the clouds either. Apple is pretty good in exchanging it with no hassle? I am within the 14 day period.

I drove 3 hours yesterday to get my iphone because I am canadian.

I have LCD Version 7459072

and I do NOT have the problem.

True but if your phone is an un-activated state this is the only thing you can see on the phone. Its good for comparing your phone to one they show you at the apple store. You will see the difference next to a good phone, theres no mistaking it.

Do we really need to make an appointment for an exchange or have issue with the iphone?

Posted by: mcumeda

I do not live close to an Apple Store. What should I do about getting this issue resolved?

Posted by: xcharliemx

So how come nobody has noticed this "issue" in the past two months?

My phone is fine.

Edit: Maybe this page will help view if there's a problem

I've seen some post about black negative but didn't know what it was until I looked further. Glad I did before my 14 day period was over.

heres my problem just in case anyone else seems to have it also. The shades look fine all the way up until 10 which at straight on seems to be 100% black, but then 00 has the negative black. This is all fixed when turned away at a certain angle. Of course I wouldn't have noticed this myself unless someone else brought it up.

So what's the issue with this "negative black"? Will this result in you not seeing anything when using any applications? What does this limit the iphone other than you can't see the globe when the "slide to unlock" bar appears? Is this significant enough to disable the phone from functioning? Please clarify OP.

Posted by: johnjayb

hmm ^^^ have the same problem where 10 looks black!!! 0% looks a tad bit green. or brighter than the 10... is this the problem???

As far as I can tell yes. Look at the side by side pictures on other sites and you will realize thats the same problem you have.

I dont know how people are saying that it would affect the globe wallpaper since theres not really any black colors on the globe and the clouds are white

Just thought i'd update some people on my situation. I had an iphone purchased end of july fist week of august. I was finally fed up with the blacks on screen and only reading more about it proved i wasnt seeing things. I made an appointment today with the genius bar. I knew from the start the "genius" i was lucky enough to get had an attitude problem as well as giving off the impression he didnt want to do **** for me. Anyway I begin to tell him about how my blacks are off and i believe its the same problem the touch is experiencing. The bright light in the apple store made it a little more difficult to prove my case. The genius says the screen looks fine and it may just be a different panel but its nothing they will give me a new iphone for. After battling a little bit I told him i guess its something I must live with. He continues to make me feel like an idiot and refuses to help me. I make one last attempt and load a picture through my browser of the jayz black album. This catches his attention and he pulls out his iphone to pull up the same picture and compare. He then says how mine does look a little different but its nothing more than "aspect ratio" or something like that and its no big deal. One of the other genius guys walks over to see whats going on. He whips out his iphone to compare and immediately says wow its experiencing the same problem as the touch and begins to show the other genius what i have been trying to say. the genius says "well you swap it out then". This new guys says fine no problem and goes gets another unit from the back for me and swaps it out for a new phone. Apparently my problem wasnt only visible with my eyes and luckily this guy backed me up. I checked the screen on the new iphone and its perfect. The jayz picture and greyscale chart test are much much much better tha my previous phone. Just thought this story might give some of you hope that there are newer units/refurbs thatwork perfectly and that if you fight your case hard enough you should be able to convince the so called geniuses. Definetly present a picture or chart to show some hard evidence.

topdog, I see that you have tmobile? how did you get away with that?, well unless of course you have att.

if you have that issue anything you see as dark/black you view it in a lighter color. You would have to tilt the phone in an angle to see it clearier. The phone is fine other tyan that. Just a personal perf if you want to exchange it for another.

I have tmobile...i am currently using the hypercard method. I made sure to do a full restore and put the att sim card back in the phone. However i did use independence to bypass the activation so i could at least use their wifi to show them a picture in order to demonstrate the issue. He asked me once why i had no service and i said i had att to try it out but deactivated it, and ill be reactivating again when my current contract was up. They didnt ask me about it again. He breifly made reference to it though when the "good" genius said he was going to swap it out for me saying "oh by the way its not activated" and the other genius said he didnt care and swapped it out for me. But if your gonna go to apple definetly restore it or make sure there are no 3rd party apps and the att sim is in the tray

Wow, I guess you got really lucky. The only way past the activation screen is to either activate with that sim or to bypass using 3rd party software. When the genius found out that it was not activated but you were still using the phone, I thought he would deny you right there.

This thread brings up an interesting question. I have been considering an iPhone, and if I were to buy one I was going get mine through Colorware. So, if I order a phone through Colorware, there is no way for me to check the phone for the Negative Black issue, until I receive...and then it does have the problem, anyone know if I can exchange through Colorware? Or another way to phrase this question have any of you bought your phone through Coloware and had this problem?
