then bring it to the u.s. when i come back, and use it with tmobile?

what about for phones that i buy overseas? it has to be gsm, and work on certain frequencies right?

DASH is quad-band GSM, so it will work in China or any other places that uses GSM. However, if you're going to use local SIM cards, you will need to SIM-unlock your phone first.

If you buy a GSM phone overseas, make sure it is also SIM-unlocked first and qaud-band.

US/NA uses 850/1900 MHz bands while rest of world uses 900/1800 MHz bands.

If you have an unlocked phone (not tied to any specific carrier) that is quadband, 850, 900, 1800, 1900, then you can use it anywhere in the world. All you have to do is get a prepaid SIM card in China and pop it in. When you get back to the states just put your SIM card back in and start making calls. The only thing is the Chinese prepaid SIM will have its own phone number so you will have to let people know what it is so they can call you. If you use your own SIM you will be able to keep your number but will have to pay outrageous roaming fees. This is not a problem if your company is paying for it, but if you are footing the bill it will get very expensive very quickly. With the prepaid SIM cards, you can just get a calling card to make calls home and they are local calls in China so you will only use minutes and not international fees.

As to the T-Mobile Dash, it is quadband so will work anywhere in the world, you just will want to make sure that it is unlocked. If it is not, T-Mobile should do it for you. Just tell them you are going abroad and will want to use a local SIM card while you are there. I don't know what T-Mobile's policy is for unlocking, Cingular (AT&T) used to be that they would unlock your phone if you had been a customer for at least 3 months and were current with your bill.
