Right now I'm in Memphis Tennessee at the Mid-South Fair on a school trip. When I got here I immediately saw the 'U' indicator on my phone. I'm sitting here with a full signal and am only getting 45KB/sec down. Is something wrong in this area? I wouldn't think the network would be overflowed by an event of this nature. Any ideas? My device is a Cingular 8525.

im only getting 690kbit/s at lebonheur with an aircard and you probably are sharing a good bit of the towers bandwidth with others at the fair.

Oh well, I'm on my way home now. It was definitely better than EDGE speeds so I can't complain too much. It was just slightly disappointing that I wasn't able to experiemce the 'real' thing.

To my knowledge, UMTS was capped at about 384Kb/sec. That would translate to about 48KB a second. So with overhead, 45KB/sec is about right.

384Kb figure was derived from my own speed testing tethered on a LG CU320 that was UMTS only.

Don't know what HSDPA would do as I don't have a data plan right now and haven't had much need for it.

Super

well was he getting 45KBytes/s or 45Kbits/s. If he did a dslreports speed test then he'll be getting it in Kbps which is waaay low for what he should be getting. At UMTS as you said it's a max of 384Kbps which he should be able to get 300Kbps out of that on a good day.

memphis has had issues with 3g. you get slow data and a lot of dead air calls or calls not ringing through. I am over there often, and I experience problems often...

Oh yes, I know Nashville's speeds well. I'm used to getting 900KB/sec on a good day. I was getting around 45-50KB/sec in Memphis today. I always convert the Kbps back to KB/sec anyway. Memphis is not HSDPA like Nashville is?

I show h on the BJ and the aircard says the network is hsdpa

Cu320 tethered is not HSDPA, its 3g data only. (limited to 384, indeed) Thats one reason I upgraded to the CU500.

HSDPA should surge up to about 800 and its download graphs look like a sawtooth -- between 150 and 800 or so. (in theory 1.1G but the packets usually complete before it gets there) 600 is a good average, usually.

From the map it looks like there is one site inside the fairgrounds, and a few nearby. I can test it tomorrow and post back anyhow.

Tested the site and its working just fine, seeing about 900 peak.
