Sony Ericsson p1i: Att or T-Mobile, Skype, Messenger, Wifi

Hello there,

First of all, I live in the US. I am thinking on getting a Sony Ericsson P1i but I have some questions.

I know the P1i doesn't have EDGE. With that said, which one offers a more stable signal, ATT or T-Mobile? How stable? How bad are the drops? With which carrier the phone behaves better?

I know I won't be able to use its 3G capabilities, but do you know if either ATT or T-Mobile is planning on getting 3G in the P1i's frequency?

Has anyone manage to make Skype work using Wifi on the P1i? How is it?

Has anyone manage to use MSN Messenger using Wifi?

Will the WIfi connect automatically with some pre-sets Hotspots. Say that if I am @ home it will automatically connect to my network and if I am @ work it will connect to the one there?

I am out of contract right now. I love the Fave Friends thing that T-Mobile offers but have been with ATT for a long time.

Thanks for your time and input.

No edge and no 3G. GPRS is what you'll get (signifigantly slower than ever edge). However, I be very careful if this is your first time using a tri-band phone. I went from a p990i to a 580i and swapped at the same time from t-mobile on the p990i to att with the w580i and noticed that without the quad band on the w580i i was dropping calls left and right

P1 don't work well in US
1. does not have 850, may have reception problem with at&t
2. doesn't have EDGE=slow
3. 3G is band 1 (2100), while at&t uses 850 and 1900, T-Mobile uses band 4 (AWS), it won't work
wifi will work

Here is an update...

Got the P1i.

It is working perfectley with T-Mobile in the Boston/Framingham area. No droped calls and great signal.

Wifi. I have IM+ working perfectly for MSN, and when I need Skype, i use fring and is working flawlessly.

No complains. Amazing phone!!!

I am only waiting for a Locationfree player.

Looks like you already got it. I was just gonna chime in with my experience (in the Boston area as well using T-mobile). GPRS speed is fine if you browse with Opera Mini 4 Beta and check your mail with the GMail app or the on-board POP email auto-retriever. Reception is fine as well since T-mobile rarely uses the 850mhz band... reception is as good as my N95.

I use the iSkoot Skype app and it works nicely. I love this phone. It may not be the fastest, but it has the most rounded out features of all phones.

Sorry to bring up this old tread, but I droped my iphone today into my pond, so thinking about getting the p1i with my at&t I'm still under contract, has anyone had experience in boston or around the boston area with at&t, please help. Thank you in advance.
