AT&T iphone just want ringtones and stuff..

Ok! Its been awhile since I've been here. Last time I actively was involved was when the Nextel 870 came out. Sorry to have dissappeared. Here's my confusion. I have an active AT&T phone. All I want is to be able to install ringtones, wallpapers, backgrounds and such. Do I still need to "unlock" my phone? Also which program(s) would best serve my purpose? So many programs, ideas, and theories brain is fried. Everything works normal on my phone just want the ability to customize. Also is there a way to relocate the clock on the iphone (back old nextel issue)?
I am running iTunes7.4.2.4
and software version 1.0.2

unlocking = SIM unlock to be able to run on any gsm carrier. to do the things you want to do all you need is to "Jailbreak" the phone, giving you access to the file system. i've used iNdependence (for mac) to jailbreak and install an ssh client.

iBrickr is what i figured I should use, but does that "hack" the phone or just allow me to change the settings without "bricking" my phone? In other words is it basically like the old loading programs for the nextels?

by running ibrickr, am i subjecting the iphone to being "bricked" when the new update comes out?

ok used it without "freeing" my phone loaded tones semi easily. But the id string keeps mp3...... In the title. Do i need to stop being cautious and free it up? I also want to change fonts and backgrounds so am I just going to have to take the plunge?

iBrickr jailbreaks your phone

It's the only way you can copy files - even ringtones - to an iPhone outside of iTunes

oh cause when i tried to run another app that was zipped with ibrickr, it said phone is not jailbreaked yet? sorry to sound like a noob, am good with phones but new to the apple side of the spectrum.

I cannot believe how F'n sweet my phone looks now. I took the plunge and actually went through the hoops loading iBrickr. I AM SOO glad i did. This is totally sweet. If anyone is having doubts lets just say i am totally satisfied. That is unless "bugs" pop up with the items i installed. I went fairly conservative, iSwitcher, Ants, Summerboard(which totaly kiss arse) and Swap Tunes(still trying to figure that one out) Thanks to all who shared insight and PM'ed me!!!!! Once again HoFo does not dissappoint

I'm totally lost in all of these threads and this one seems to be on the same track as I am on. I have an iPhone on 1.1.2 (3B48b) and I use the Xillisoft program to do ringtones so that is not a problem. I would really like to customize the look of the phone and maybe throw a few other apps on it or games whatever. I don't want to switch my provider or anything like that so i'm a bit confused...is there a guide to what I need to do or can someone point me in the right direction?

if you have a 1.1.2 phone and are using iTunes 7.5 all you have to do is change the id string from m4a to m4r. Make sure the clips are AAC converted and thats it. They come up on your phone as custom ring tones. As far as apps are concerned, that is a little bit more labor intensive, and depends on how savvy you are. If you are comfortable with your ability to mod your phone, follow this guide:

Its lengthy, but actually not that hard to follow. I have used it a few times (some apps may crash your phone) so I have gooten pretty good at it. The author has included just about every scenerio you can think of. If you need help let me know, and I can try and help. I mod everything else so i'm gonna do it up and see what happens. I already got custom ringtones working so i'm set on that, I was just trying to find a place to start with 1.1.2 so thanks alot for the link, I am gonna go do it now
