I am about to get the treo 700p. I have been getting very mixed responses to this question. Other that aim's built in IM forwarding, is there any program that will use sms rather than data? I have an unlimitied text plan, but am going to put on a data block.

huh???? What are you asking??? Be more specific.

BTW...Stay away from the 700p...its a lemon (unless you are getting for free and not forced into a contract). The 755 is a far better choice.

on the 755p, yes. On the 700p, not that I know of.

The Treo 755p on Sprint has an IM program that uses txt messages and the Centro does also on Sprint.

The 700 allows you text message thought the built-in sms application. It does not use data.

However if your talking about sending from your AIM or Yahoo account, then you have to use data. Even the 755's buit-in AIM/Yahoo messenger app is just a front-end UI that uses data I believe.

I would be surprised that Sprint or Verizon allow you to buy the 700p without adding some data plan. I m assuming that you don't want to incur data charges. Are you purchasing the phone out-right or is it part of a contract?

Sprint doesn't require you to get anything but a voice plan when purchasing a phone.
