XV6700 voicemail icon & notification always on

on my 6700 the new voicemail icon is always on and i can't seem to
get it to shut off. the notification text is always on the bottom left
because of this. i called my voicemail and changed the personal options
so it's set to off but it never goes away and is really annoying me.
i also had a friend leave me several voicemails to see if that would do it
after deleting them, but i don't receive new notifications
