Incorrect SIM error: DO NOT take your phone to the store yet!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Sorry for the big subject line but I'm just trying to get HoFo'ers attention. Do not take it back to your at&t store or Apple store. All they would have to do is click that little i <--- italic "i" at the top right and they can tell you were messing around because then it says "IMEI 00 4999901 0640000 0" and that gives you away. It SHOULD say the IMEI listed on the back of your phone on the bottom right hand side. I hope this helps somebody because it sure saved me.

Reposting in Unlocking forum just in case.

Sorry for reposting this here but I just thought everyone needed to know. If it's wrong, mods please delete.

Just found it out the hard way! Damn!

I think he means bottom right on the activation screen??. I believe jailbreaking your phone does this and also bbupdater too. I'm trying to find a way to restore the factory IMEI while keeping it locked and not jailbroken

Posted by: rossfuz

Posted by: richy240

I already checked mine; it has the correct IMEI listed. I used the Unlock-fast.pxl method.

No, what I meant is on the "Activate iPhone" screen with the Earth on it. To the right of "connect to iTunes"

Has anbody had any luck reverting back to 1.02? How long will it take the Dev Team to have a solution? It is so frustrating.

Red, can you read this and tell me if it makes sense? From what I understood is he tried to rollback to 1.0.2 but he still can't get into the phone. Am I understanding it right?

http://iphone.fiveforty.net/wiki/in...49990106 40000

Edit: I need a break and get my mind off this. I can't even understand what I'm reading anymore.

Posted by: Red Setter

I read that last night too. And it was so much greek to me as well. it sounds like he tried it and it worked. But then it didn't.... Hello? I'm thinking he doesn't understand what he's doing and is reporting things he should leave to people who have a clue.

For what it's worth: I tried it also last night and it did NOT work. The phone just hangs there doing nothing

Posted by: xcharliemx

I went to at&t at lunch and got a new SIM card and it's still the same situation. From other postings on the Internet I figured that would be the case but I still HAD to do it because if not it would be at the back of my mind nagging of how that could be it.

Ok something tells me I have as good of a chance of getting a replacement as a one legged man in an a$$-kicking contest but I'm still going to try. I'm going to the Imperial Death Star...........the Apple store. Wish me luck. My battle plan is saying I have no idea what this unlocking is you talk about. Shoot, Unlock the phone? I can't even get a simple patch to go through and you think I know how to unlock this? How did my phone get unlocked if it was a supposed new one from you guys? You must've sold me a repackaged unlocked one.

I'm dumb and innocent.

good luck!
But I already tried it.
I was like

" unlock? what r u saying? i don't even see a bolt to take the phone apart.
i really don't understand the words from your mouth"

then the apple guy said

"using iphone for the other carrier other than at&t or any other 3rd party apps cause this problem"

so i was

"I open this att contract when i bought my iphone how could i use other carrier since the phone is only for ATT? and what do u mean applicaation?"

that apple guy

"anything that hacks the iphone and add or alter anything on the original phone is causing this issue"

so i was

" so somebody hacked my phone? or virus?"

then the apple boy

"no your phone was hacked by you or someone who had physical access to your phone. there are such a lot of programs were online for hacking the phone"

and i was

" hey i don't even know what that is. r u saying that i hacked my phone since nobody had any chance to access my phone? man..do i sound like a computer genius? and why would i hack my own phone?"

and then the genius..

" I'm not saying you are lying. and i'm not saying i don't trust you.
I just trust the phone. phone is not lying."

i had argument for an hour.. but guess what.. they don't listen to me..
I went to 2other apple store and same thing. this is just my case.
you might be able to fool them.
I hope you get replacement.
Good luck.

Well that's uninspiring, thank you for sharing though. My feeling is it depends on the "Genius" you talk to. They probably have their own personal opinions about unlocking and some might feel more strongly about it than others. Some people in the other thread, specifically this guy, is what gave me hope:

I then called the Customer Relations number and they said "we beleive you sir, we are having lots of problems with last nights update. Don't worry let me talk to the Tech Guy and we will swap a new one out" I said ok. The Tech Guy could'nt beleive he has to give me a new one.

Just complain and talk to somebody higher.

Ok well I decided against driving out to the Apple store cause it would've been a total 7 hour drive and that's now how I enjoy spending my Saturdays. I called tech support. Real nice guy. He had me uninstall iTunes and Quicktime and then restart and reinstall then try a hard reset. Failed.

He said there would be a $29.00 fee for the loaner phone and I didn't complain. I told him I have an Apple Gift Card with a $32.00 balance (thanks apple early adopter credit!) and he said I could not use it. He put me on hold and came back and waived it.

He did however ask for my credit card # and said it will be charged if I don't return the loaner phone within 10 business days (2 weeks). The little devil in my shoulder was screaming "Just cancel the card and keep the damn phone!!" but no, I have brought this all upon myself by messing with the baseband (even though I didn't successfully unlock). He made it clear if my phone is unlocked or if I have third party apps they will not issue a new one. My phone has neither of those situations so I'm confident this MAY end well.

Thank you everyone that shared your experiences with this situation (Red Setter and pho1982 I'm looking at you!). I'll post an update when my phone is returned.

Good grief, this is all very disconcerting. Prior to the 1.1.1 release, I was advocating the iPhone to my friends and husband, telling them I enjoyed it more than any other phone I've owned. I would always add the caveat that there are big areas of "opportunity" for Apple to improve the software, but it was such a good start. Now with people like Charlie having such problems with the update, and all the reports of the hard line Apple tech support is holding, I am now telling all my friends and husband to steer clear of the iPhone for now. (I know, insignificant in the big scheme, but it adds up if there are others doing the same...)

Apple has used up most of the benefit-of-the-doubt I had in my head. I find it unlikely they couldn't easily release a complete restore process for phones that are able to still go into restore mode. This seems to be more of putative, cute, "nyah nyah" move. All speculation, but I don't have much else to go on.

For now my phone is fine, working on my company's T-Mobile sim, but I don't expect that to last forever. When it comes to an end, I won't rail much again Apple, but I doubt I'll buy another phone from them. That makes me sad, cus I really do like the iPhone.

*shrug* my 2¢

HEy I got my phoen replaced last saturday with new one from the store where they rejected me at the first time with a big argument.
long story short.
First I called the applecare at the morning.
I explained what happen with my phone and told her i never did anything to my phone.
and i have no idea what that is.
me and applecare rep and att rep had a conference call to check if att has same imei num as what i have on the back of my phone and apple's database and att's.
we all confirm that my phone had a correct imei num on every database.
apple rep ask me if i want to be mailed for replacement or go to near apple store.
I picked the store that rejected me big time.
she made a appoinment and i made on time.
I found the same genius and the store manager i talked at the first day.
and I gave them case number.
they both were like sorry and gave me the new one.
and me? I was behaved like the rudest mofo on the planet to make them pissed.

Just curious: Did they give you the phone sealed? Any attempt to open it and activate it there? And was it new or refurbed?

Posted by: ebola1282

well I just got my iPhone back from apple... it looks like they updated it to 1.1.1, unbricked it however can not get pass the wrong sim card error... the weird thing is, if i restart the phone with out a sim put in it'll pop the "no sim card installed" code. and give me a "slide to unlock" put my sim back in and the phone works like a itouch... everything but the phone functions its self... on the phone with apple as I type this will give further info later.... (from posts before this to make a long story short, only had 3rd party apps installed, not unlocked... when upgraded to 1.1.1 it bricked my phone, called, *****ed telling them i never had anything installed etc... and they said send it in for repair... that was Monday got it back today...)

Posted by: Red Setter

When you connect it to iTunes does it start the AT&T activation process? Or does it tell you you have an invalid sim then too?

Posted by: ebola1282

invalid sim.... on the phone with lv. 2 tech support.. just had me hard reset the phone... still no fix.... i'll update when i have further
