BB 8320 Question (Newbie)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi, I've been a Sidekick owner for the past 3 years and have gotten used to my IM always being available unless I'm out in the country somewhere. I have just gotten the 8320 and am finding that I am losing connectivity. All the bars are showing and it is showing edge in lowercase. I didn't have this problem yesterday. Is there a config option I am missing. I am trying Jivetalk as my IM app. I was also unable to send and receive email. Thanks in advance and I apologize if this has already been answered in another post.

Simple question but have to ask...when did you add the data plan? could possibly be like a provisioning problem from when they activated the BB data plan on your account

The data plan was added when I got the phone that was on Wednesday, 9/26. I don't have any problems when it is connected to Wi-Fi. Its just when I leave the house. Thanks.

I would imagine that the provisioning would be done by now, have you tried to contact T-Mobile to make sure everything is going good and no network outages?

Sounds like your APN isn't set. Go to options -> Advanced Options -> TCP. For the APN make sure its wap@voicestream.com . See if that makes a difference.

Also make sure that your device isn't set to wifi only. Manage Connections -> Mobile Network Options. Make sure connection preference isn't set to wifi only. Mine is set to wifi preferred.

I've checked my settings. I have my APN set to wap.voicestream.com. Is it supposed to be wap@voicestream.com? Also it has places for username and password, are those supposed to be blank?

Under Mobile Network Options I have:
Data services = On
Connection Preference = Wi-Fi Preferred
Mobile Network = T-Mobile
Network Selection Mode = Automatic

Thanks.

Since I have a few questions regarding BB 8320, I might as well as here since I'm a BB newb as well.

For the GPS purposes, does one require a data plan? Or can the maps be stored internally? Does the GPS function without data plan or it must have a data plan at all times to be able to utilize the GPS? Voice guidance is not a priority.

Thanks.

Sorry it should be wap.voicestream.com . Username and password are blank. Maybe you could try a battery pull (while the phone is on) and also take out your SIM. Laave both of these out for about a minute, then put them back in. If you are still having problems, then it's time to contact T-mobile's BB data support. There might be an issue in your area.

I know Southern Cali had an issue with the UMA connections yesterday but all seems to be well now.

Mapping Applications like BB Maps, Google Maps and Telenav all use data.

Thanks for the help. I've been out a couple of times today in the same area where I had problems and everything seem to be working. So maybe it was just a glitch.

Damn that sucks. Wish it'd work standalone with the data plan, damn data costs an arm and a leg up here in Canada.

You thinking about moving from your E90 to a BB?

The plus of the BB GPS is it locks very quickly, but the minus is, you can not download the maps and store them on your SD card like you can with the Nokia Maps downloader on the E90.

Does Rogers offer unlimited BB data? Generally the way data plans work with a BB is if you use a BES server, all the data goes over your BES connection and not counted against a data plan offered by the carrier.

They don't and that's a shame! You can view the Rogers Wireless data rates here. If you want to view their voice & data bundle rates click here.

WOW, $100 for 200 megs? Ouch! $29 for unlimited BIS only here!

That's a bummer man. I almost said "well, at least it's in Canadian dollars," but now their dollar is worth more than ours!

Finally you guys can crack jokes about our currency..

I was contemplating, but no GPS is a bummer. E90 for now until BB comes up with it's own version of map-loader. Data is way to expensive here, and I think there's a rumour going on about $65/Unlimited data for BB's, but that is still expensive for me/month.

That is outrageous. I wonder if the government is financing your national health care system thru Roger's data plans.

So in the land of RIM, you cant really get a data plan that allows you to fully utilize the full capabilities of a BB without the need for a 2nd mortgage?

Posted by: jontymisra

Carl, that's pretty much the situation here, in the land of RIM, lol.

And who knows where Roger's money is actually going.

Classic!

Lol, but on the side note, how is the BB 8320? Any skype client/software for BB? I'm still deciding how important GPS is for me.
