I've got a few old 8 gig's lying around and looked at the box.. nothing indicates what firmware it has..

The only thing that is consistent on the boxes is the part number.

MA712LL/A which from my experience all contain firmware 1.0.0

Anybody else with a different part number? or the same part number with a different firmware? Just trying to help people out that want to try to get an iphone that can be modded and unlocked...

The part number likely does not vary, regardless of the firmware version.

Is it safe to assume that any leftover 4 gig models will have waaaay-pre 1.1.1 firmware loaded?

D00d, those will have 1.0.1 almost guaranteed.

I'm assuming the ones with 1.1.1 will have the iTunes Wi-Fi Store icon on the box.

Nope I got mine a week ago and it had the 102.. so beware, I was going to get an 8 Gig 'er but now I am scared!

I got an 8GB on Tuesday and it had 1.02. I doubt that you'll see 1.1.1 on in-store phones for at least a week...

from the hackintosh forums

"You can check what firmware is pre-installed by going to the emergency call, entering *3001#12345#* then pressing "Call". Under Versions you will find what revision firmware is in the phone out of the box.

03.12.06_G Is firmware 1.0.0
03.14.08_G Is firmware 1.0.1 and 1.02
04.01.13_G Is 1.1.1"
