Ok, so I'm a complete newbie to GSM phones, I've used Verizon all my life.

But I'm seriously thinking of making the move from Verizon, to a local GSM carrier, and I'm in the market for a phone.

Some qualifiers.

I do not own a land-line, this will be the only phone I ever use, so the quality of voice, and reception is the most important feature. But, I'd also like some extras, internet, GPS and the like.

I can spend maybe 400-450, and smaller would be better, but I don't really care if its miniature.

I'm currently looking at some Sony Ericsson on recommendations from several people who speak highly of them in terms of durability, and value for the dollar. But again, I have no idea.

Smart phones interest me, some PDA function could be really helpful, as I tend to lose notebooks, planers and the like with fair frequency, but I hardly think I need some super business phone.

Style matters, but its not the most important factor.

I actually considered the iphone, but I'd rather not spend a fortune on an unlocked one only to have a firmware update lock it all up again, and I'm certainly not about to sign up with service on AT&T just for the phone, although I have to say, it looks to be a phone that does a lot of things I might want a phone to do.

So suggest away, all types, ranging from pure talk only phones, to super phones, and if you could explain whats good about them as well that would be great. I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
