I own an iPhone. I am an AT&T paying customer on an iPhone plan. Apple is getting its cut from AT&T from me.

I have a bunch of Apple products and have been a great customer. I have a MacBook Pro, an Apple TV, several iPods, even an apple hifi.... Apple has treated me reasonably well over this period, taking care of issues..

I unlocked the phone using iUnlock just for kicks. I have a second home in Canada that I visit occasionally and wanted to avoid the outragous roaming rates by having the possibility to use a Rogers sim... I had no idea this was going to be a one way dead end street. I did assume that I might brick the phone during the unlock process. It worked without a hitch...

However, I am beginning to believe that Apple's statement that the firmware was irrepairably damaged might be true... Why else would they not have simply reflashed the correct (Apple unmodified) firmware back and relocked the phone. Instead we ended up with bricks.

I'd like some clarity on some things...

1. Is it possible to "permanently damage" the firmware as Apple have stated. I'm a software engineer with 15 years experience that worked on many of the products you all are using everyday (I worked at Microsoft on IE, .Net, etc.). I have never worked with firmware. I've never found a technical description of how the unlock works.. I'd like to understand it more... I actually am not sure I believe that Apple is lying when they made their statement that the phone is irrepairably damaged...

2. If Apple *is* lying and the phone firmware is not "irrepairably damaged" then why hasn't there been much of a reaction? If Microsoft did something like that could you imagine the press and comments? Microsoft could never get away with something so aggressive, yet the Apple "fanboys" (who loath microsoft so much) seem to think this behavior is fine.

So, can anyone provide technical details of how the unlock works, and why the iUnlock and AnySim solutions result in bricked phones while the iPhone
Simfree unlock does not? What is different about these solutions?

Maybe Apple isn't lying?
