i got tired of not seeing this posted up so i decided to register and post it becasue nobody seems to know about it.

there is a weird menu on the sidekick and this is how you get to it:

1)remove battery
2)hold "W"
3)insert battery

it takes you to this error screen and all you can do from there is reboot or press and hold the menu button for 1 second and it will display some wierd Keyboard Request stuff
anyone else know any wierd things about this phone?

well, thats pretty much all there is. i know this is my 1st post and all but that really shouldnt matter becasue its not that amount of posts that matter, its the knowledge you possess. so if you nee help programming, or with any general cell phone information, please let me know.

NOTE: i will teach you how to hack. a hacker is not created. a hacker devotes his/her life to computers and is willing to dedicate his/her life to it.
i have been programming since the 4th grade (when i learned Batch) and then from ther i learned C, C++, Java, JavaScript, J2ME, and BASIC. and now im learning PERL. im now a freshman in high school, so thats a good 5 years of computer devotion. what i can do with computers is boundless. hell i even got SWAT called on me becasue i scanned a goernment computer with some scanning software. i have almost been arrested for anti-social charges and beligerant behavior with computers. the only reason why im still allowed to use computers and cell phones is becasue i have a signed agreement that when i graduate from colledge, i must go into the millitary and help stop computer warfare (as they called it)
i take what i do very seriously so please dont bug me when i saw i dont feel like being bothered becasue your begging for a DoS attack.
well, that about sums up all the highlights is my life lol
so if you ask me any questions related to hacking unless i say otherwise i will ignore you.

it indeed is. when you plug you phone up through USB on that menu, the computer only detects it as Hiptop and it needs special drivers. im going to make my own drivers and see what this menu can do!
maybe it will give me access to its NAM or its recovery rom. but who really knows.

haha you say petty, i say smart. and loking at my post above, there is alot of grammer errors. i really need a new keyboard lol. maybe one with some LED's

what do you mean by locked?
like it requires a password???

well the sidekick 3 only has a max of 999 possibilities.
but an easy way to unlock it is to do this:

Optional 1)Take out the SIM card (if it has one)
2)Turn the phone on the phone and hold "R" (it should reboot. let go of R when the 1st icon appears)
3)At the password screen, press and hold @+1+0 it will reboot again
4)you should now be at the main menu!!!
Optional 5)reinsert the SIM card (if it had one)

errrr this is a known procedure to unlock the phone for developer and debug it in case of problems (by uploading a new OS image, which aren't nearly publicly available). Its not even a secret, you can find the instructions to do this on the semi-public Danger developer forum.

And no, you can't unlock the phone through that menu, or otherwise do anything usefull or l33t hackish.

i already figured as much considering it tell you what recovery roms to boot up -___-
and it was just a guess. i was just thinking that one could make their own recovery.rom and load it with unbranded features and so on.
although the recovery.rom file is damn near impossible to find!

Bahahahahaah! You found the recovery menu! Bravo! A well documented feature.

You'll NEVER make use of it. OS images are SIGNED. If the signatures do not match, it is not loaded. This Digital Key is stored in a safe location inside Danger's HQ. There is no way to get this key unless you break into Danger's HQ and steal it. Get over yourself.

i bet 99% of you dont even know what a DoS attack is without looking it up.
and you are incorrect, got my developer key, installed the drivers that came with a new SDK and the recovery.rom file is now extracted. shows how much you people know lol.
i sumed up my life store because i was a new person. if you look that was posted a while ago. and i find it rather sad that you would bother to read old posts.
and about the whole get a social life thing....its pretty sad that you could talk big **** over the intenet. i give you a big thumbs up for being able to say something online lol.
and then to joke about really proved you indeed have no life.
i rarely get on this site. i just decided to check up on this because i had some spare time after finishing extracting the rom image.
also it proves your lack of knowledge that the developers key signs 3rd party applications with a dummy signature so they can be run.
you really should laugh at someone when you yourself are a complete ******* to the subject.

You cannot extract images with a Developer Key nor htConsole. Only way to get the recovery rom, or OS images for that matter is to either create a JTAG for the device and dump it that way (For which the specifications are not out and you'd have to engineer it on your own.), desolder the get your hands on the tools Danger uses Internally to flash/erase devices.

Since you know, all the commands needed to dump the memory are locked out by your device... not HTConsole.

You'd also know it's not called recovery.rom if you had it, but you know it all. so go you... I guess. *shrug*

i guess you dont get it.
htconsole lets you flash files to your device correct?
there are applications out there for extracting the recovery.rom, images, and so on (look on the skdr forums)
just use htconsole to flash the application to your phone, reboot it, load it, plug it up to a charger and let it go.
it extracts everything to the root of your micro SD card.

p.s. the developer key was necesary to flash the device (hints "i got my developer key")

full steps:

look in the skdr forums for extracting sidekick images
download the only application that comes up
flash it to your device
reboot it
restart it
load the application
plug your phone into a charger
in about 10-13 minutes you will have all your files (applications and all) flashed to the root of your memory card so i recomend having a spare.)

not that hard. but i guess if you didnt know that then i must know it all so thanks for the compliment :rolls eyes:

Two immediate things

1.) DoS attack: Became a very popular method of breaking very major sites a few years ago, so much so that the term has been used in mainstream media channels like Fox, CNN, and the like. Also, you are on a phone gadget forum, meaning your audience are mostly geeky types that like to know a lot about the device they have / want and will know the necessary gadget/computer terms required.

As such.. this audience will definitely know what a DoS attack is. Even if they did not, there is no shame in looking up information. That's what a "hacker" does. They explore, poke, prod, and learn about a system. If a "hacker" never did this they would never learn. If you claim to be such an elite piece of kit, why would you discourage that behavior in others?

2.) It's silly to think someone (be it online or the real world) wont use past statements you have made against you. This is an easy and common method of questioning contradiction and sorting out the "truthiness" of a present statement made by that individual. If you need to correct yourself, make a public record stating so, otherwise you come off a bit hypocritical.

So with that out of the way.

I have no idea how the rom system works on the sidekick, and to be honest the hardware limitations make me really not want to find out. The old hardware is not that impressive, and if you read the majority of grips about the platform you will find out that most people are upset at the lack of hardware updates and not the OS side.

However, as a former .... computer intellectual... I wish you all the luck in your endeavor. Screen caps / pictures are a wonderful way to silence critics as well as reproduceable steps verified by third parties. Name calling in forums... eh.. not so much

Hacker - just do what you gotta do. Post some screen shots. And everyone that doubted you will see.

I know it would be 100% possible to get linux or bsd to boot on a sidekick. I don't know enough about the security of the sidekick, or enough about your skills to know if it would be possible for YOU to do this. But I am sure a team of netbsd kernel developers could do it within a very short peroid once the security part was taken care of.

I have seen an older sidekick running linux anyway.

There are no applications to dump the Hiptop's firmware. There will never be. ESPECIALLY on SKDR, since the guy that owns that site works for Danger and getting the firmware of the device is probably not legal. There is no API for getting to the firmware either. Keep trying to think you're cool, maybe someone will eventually love you outside of your online "girl"friend.

The older Color sidekick linux port was uClinux which is a thin linux kernel/OS. The sidekick 2 was given a linux port as well by Niacin over at toc2rta, but I don't know how complete it was (I believe he never finished posting the information on this, and is now busy with iPhone/iPod Touch. None of these linuxes have been able to access the radio for GPRS/GSM, and they never will.
