(if) AT&T WM6 upgrade for 10/1/07

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

While there are already at least a half a dozen WM6 threads dedicated to the upgrade, many are discussing the previous release dates and have gone 10+ pages and are semi-off topic.

I thought I'd start a new one to discuss the differences between the leaked WM6 and the official WM6 - provided it does come out tomorrow.

Well we already know that the leaked WM6 ROM has some problems including

No Internet Connection Sharing
No Press 'N Hold for Symbol
End key bug when receiving multiple calls

Probably others but those are the main.

Beta WM6:
Same gimped Bluetooth stack as the WM5 ROM (No support for Bluetooth-based voice dialing or support for SAP)

Final WM6 (based on i600 final ROM):
Much improved Bluetooth stack, roughly on par with the standard Microsoft/HTC stack

Please excuse my ignorance.... but what does an improved bluetooth stack do for a phone?

Posted by: xSNOWCAT

and the official better have the carousel them on the rom

Well, nothing unless the current stack is deficient, like it is on the Blackjack.

1) Bluetooth SIM Access Profile (SAP). Most phones have this, Blackjack doesn't. SAP allows devices like car kits and headsets with displays to do some or all of the following: Signal strength, battery level, contact name on caller ID instead of just number, and phonebook synchronization)

2) Headset-driven activation. Normally, your headset rings and you push the button to answer it. For the past several years though you've been able on certain handsets to push the button outside of a call and have the phone respond by activating the Bluetooth link and listening for a command. This does not work on the Blackjack as the current stack doesn't allow for Bluetooth button presses outside of a phone call.

3) Most phones determine the "current active" headset by the last one that was used. If, for example, the last headset I answered was my car kit but both it and my headset are in range, the car kit will ring on a call but both will respond to button presses. On the Blackjack, the phone will allow you to pair multiple headsets but only one can be active at a time. The phone will not link up with a headset or car kit that is not marked as active. You have to go into the Bluetooth Settings program and change your active headset. God forbid you want to use both a headset and a car kit!

The official upgrade is supposed to have Video Share in final form. I see its in the settings but don't think it was operational from the leaked version. This may have been a good part of the delay getting this to work to a level they wanted. Given the delays we should all be given 20 mins free service to try it out!

There is a very tiny chance that 4GB microSD cards will work after the upgrade, most the time they say its hardware limitation, but a few items have turned out to be upgradeabel despite that general truth and the manuf. initially putting it out that no it cannot be done. Sometimes it can be upgraded via firmware changes, but many more times not.

I am trying out 4Smartphone.com as they now do have Exchange 2007 available, mail2web.com is my main exchange but its still on 2003. Mobile 6 is supposed to allow html e-mail via Exchange 2007 but generally the e-mail is working in the leaked version, but we might see some little improvements with the Mobile Outlook working with a 2007 Exchange server. There have been a few issues with this and Global Addresses/Server search, as well as another download they just pulled, so something with Mobile 6 and Exchange should be new.

Hopefully MSNMobile.com's application will work with the official WM6 and upgrades as it plays Today SHow and NBC news clips in full screen and in darn good quality, but so far it only works on Blackjacks with Mobile 5. On their site they do show it works on the Dash with Mobile 6.

Did anyone mention we need to get back the ability to get upper key characters by delayed or held longer button pressing.

I have both Mobile 5 and Mobile Leaked 6 on my 2 Blackjacks, right now I get much faster overall downloads on Mobile 5 compared to 6 and that scrolling thing is annoying on the leaked 6, so hopefully Mobile Internet works much bettter.

We may see a difference in how the Blackjack holds onto 3G signals and the switching back to Edge etc.... There is a clear difference from WM5 and the leaked WM6, there may be some tweaking and a difference in how the Blackjack interacts with the towers.

A few things already in the leaked but new from WM5 is the improved Tasks, you can now enter some details, dates due etc... and the Calendar has some differences, a few minor item with Contacts etc...

ATT support opens at 8am eastern tomorrow, so do they wait till then?

I just hope we do not end up like the Apple folkes and have a lot of discussion tomorrow about how to downgrade back to WM5 because of some things being made worse. Hopefully, time will tell tomorrow!

Well, the download Microsoft took down was for upgrading existing Mobile 6 devices to allow the Mobile Office 6 application to be fully compatible with Microsoft Office 2007 documents. It says the download is not final for another few weeks. I hope this is not delaying our getting Mobile 6, cause it sounds like just a small download, not something that needs to be a ROM upgrade, plus Mobile 6 has a update application path built in. Here is a link to one version of the story from Computerworld in Singapore.

Well I've been watching the AT&T forums, and all I've seen a references to two support chat interactions where one person was told there is "no official release date", and the other was told "the week of Oct. 1st"....

Just when I think no one can surpass the company I work for in the "Right Hand Doesnt Know What The Left Is Doing" category... AT&T is coming up on them.

give it another day. this sort of thing usually happens on a tuesday. that way folks have a day in the office in case something comes up at the 11th hour. also, they have the entire rest of the week to deal with the consequences if something is completely wrong.

It will be interesting to see if the final version upgrade limits Ringtones to the 250KB amount that is within the leaked version. Of course there is a way to edit the Registry to fix that fairly easily, but given all this time and wait, I hope that at least they have gone through it with a fine tooth comb and resolved all of the items we want either improved or back to how they were in the original Mobile 5 setup and firmware. It is too bad AT&T feels compelled to say nothing official, or not keep a site with updates on their progress like many upgrades of software have. At some point they may learn, but overall it just is sending a message of frustration and it supports the assumption that they are not on top of their game to be taking so long for a set of upgrades that from all we hear is somewhat simple.

Wirelessly posted (Palm Treo 750: Palm750/v0000 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows CE; PPC; 240x320) UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

Guess today wasn't the day. Maybe the 12th will be.

According to the dozen or so people on the AT&T forums and who contacted AT&T via chat or phone - we're now being told 10/22.

Posted by: ~~Tito~~

Thats just bull crap. . . . .

Posted by: player911

lmao. 10/22

I wish I could be the person sitting behind a desk pulling dates out of my a$$. I wonder how much money he makes.

The sad thing is that I bet they release the version already floating around the internet. Lol. That'll be funny. Wait all this time for a version you coulda had 6 months ago.

In the past the companies who were promoting new gadgets really paid attention to early adoptors and tried hard to win good reviews with the specialty web sites. They were very concerned with forum talk and often reacted to carefully keep a certain segment of their customer base happy enough to avoid possible consequences of pissing them off. Marketing dollars were kept low as they felt sales to the masses would take time to catch on and many would not buy no matter the improvement in ease of use and productivity until the price came down and early issues resolved.

When a jump is made to selling a product based more upon commercial advertising there is a certain mentality that sets in which demonstrates that those of us who are more into products than the average joe are lsuddenly ess important and need not be as concerned with pleasing us. In the case of the Blackjack, many many Millions of dollars were spent on TV and print ads for many months. The Blackjack was marketed towards a different buyer to some extent.

RIght now they are demonstrating that they just don't care as much about what we feel, we are less important as the Blackjack was sold to a different buyer. Keeping us happy is not as important as it used to be, when we were one of the best forces in spreading the word about what a great new product the Blackjack was and is.

If they want to sell more BJs they will just put out ads about it being new and improved. The question I have is are they taking so much more time to disable and cripple the blackjack in better and more sophisticated ways, cause they clearly are not that concerned with how we react to this ongoing demonstration of lack of priorities with the online Blackjack owners out here.

I may cancel my data plans, shut off my 2 Blackjacks, and write some folkes at ATT and Samsung. It may not do much cause they will just mass market this to those in TV land, but I think I will feel better just in case they have learned that their approach to downgrading us was not completely as they expected.

I have said it before and I say it again, going back to November of last year, the companies saw what was coming in Mobile 6, to take almost a year to roll this out and leave bugs in the Blackjack in the name of we will fix those in the upgrade with Mobile 6, involves a monumental effort in stupidity and error o gance by ATT and perhaps some by the others involved. They have made such poor decisions and a mess of this, I will not soon forget in my future buying and service decisions. Its not just a maybe, it a done deal!

I have to agree. Look at the computer industry, they put their new computers out there and embargo the sale of them, just so that they reviewers will have a crack at them. What does the phone industry do? They hide under a rock.

www.palm.com is super slow right now, so not sure if they're just having problems or maybe they're uploading WM6 for the 750.

Update: Looks to be an internet outage in NY as ESPN and MLB are also incredibly slow.
