How were you able to retain your service discount when going iPhone?

Hi,

I'm currently using AT&T, in the middle of a 2yr contract and have a 15% service discount through my wife's company. If I go with an iPhone, I understand from reading the forums, that they will waive the term fee and just start me on another 2yr journey.

I thought in the beginning discounts were not honored in going iPhone but read people were able to retain their discounts and think read people losing them. Has anyone that has had the phone for a while not lose their discounts to date?

So I'm wondering if I go to my local Apple store, buy the phone, take it home and go through registration, porting my existing number over (I assume that's an option), will my discount remain? What is current policy? What's the best way to ensure that I retain my discount?

Thanks,
Don

The only way I know of you keeping your discount would be to unlock your iphone and just put your current sim card in it. If you were to activate it via itunes, then I believe AT&T will remove all discounts associated with your account. If you go the unlock route, then make sure you put a data plan on your account.

you dont need to unlock...just jailbreak it.

I don't know about existing customers, but I switched to AT&T when I bought the iPhone and we were able to use my the discount through my wife's employer. No problems...

I still have my discount. I am on a family plan. The discount goes to the primary line, and I am a secondary line. If you are not on a family plan but you both use AT&T it could be worth switching to family to keep the discount. In any event, make sure that your wife's line is the primary line and that the iPhone line is the secondary line.

In my case where both my wife and I both have an iPhone the only way to get the discount is pay $10 a month to activate a thrid line and make that the primary. Our bill is over $140 month so the 19% discount makes up for the extra $10 spent for the third line. Next I took the Cingular phone and sold it on Ebay for a nice profit and am still ahead. All this because Apple is so greedy with the discounts and AT&T bent over to have the iPhone!

Except that they got AT&T to only charge $20 for unlimited data instead of $40...

My situation is similar to dwest in that my wife's line is the primary line on our plan, while my phone (the iPhone) is on a secondary line. The discount we have it applied on the primary line and not the secondary line. I have gone through three billing cycles and there has been no impact to the discount. *knocks on wood*

what about if both hubby and i want to switch to AT&T and keep our existing numbers? only one line will be an iphone and the other, a regular phone/PDA. i want to be able to still obtain the discount so i can make the iphone as the secondary line. i just don't know how i should go by the steps? should we switch to AT&T first and port our existing numbers (get my hubby's phone and just a free phone) and then once that's done and over with, buy the iphone and activate it? because i want to make sure that both lines will end up in one account and that will be eligible for the corporate discount. please advise. thanks!
