What is the chances of getting a older version 1.0.2 at the Apple Store as of today? I am in San Francisco by the way. If I get a version 1.1.1 I can only downgrade to 1.0.2 but can not unlock it correct?

What are the chances.

What are.

2 of my friends in Los Angeles picked up an iPhone the day after the 1.1.1 release and they were both 1.1.1. One was bought at The Grove store in Los Angeles and the other at the Beverly Center store in Los Angeles. Some people are speculating that maybe Apple updated the firmware on their exisiting stock once it was released. I have read that other users have bought brand new iPhones in other states and they report 1.1.1 as well.

4-5 digit of the serial number

This is to check what firmware is actually on the phone.

On the actual box, it shows the serial number of the phone. The serial number includes the production week for that particular iPhone (i.e. 7U738xx... would be production week 38 {ignore first 3 characters}).

From what others have been posting, any iPhones made on or before week 38 have the older (unlockable) firmwares preinstalled while iPhones made on or after week 39 have the newer (1.1.1) firmware preinstalled.

I went down to Seattle (Alderwood Mall) this past Sunday and picked up an iPhone. They originally handed me a week 39 so I asked if they had any other ones, specifically week 38. The people looked at me like I was speaking Greek or something. One "Genius" guaranteed me that there were no differences. But the nice cashier lady checked their stock and found three week 38s left. So, my friend and I both picked one up. Indeed both our week 38 iPhones had the older firmware and now they are both unlocked.

No just ask them for the 4GB and an 8 GB, then check the back of the box on the 8GB. Worst case take the 4GB if you are lucky, I don't think it could be the new 1.1.1, so TFSU
(the firmware should unlock)

oh my God!! i just oredered 2 iphones 8gb from the apple store. do u think they'll come with 1.1.1??

Posted by: marktang

if they sold out on their old stock then everything will be with 1.1.1. if u buy it from apple online u can always just check the week without opening the wrapper and if its week 39 and u dont want to risk it then just refund it.

Posted by: ahuang722

Can some one post a sample picture of the serial number on the box?

Posted by: goldsaint

I don't get this week thing...

best site website ever since wrestlebabes.com

Ok, here's the serial #

7R732484YUE

The bolded parts is the week number, digits 4th and 5th

Where are you getting this 4GB iphone?
Most likely you will be getting the old one (102) since 4GB are discontinued...

Yes, they want you happy leaving on that first visit than calling corporate and complaining about the restocking fee and throwing a fit everywhere you go. "One visit resolution."

Yes tell them the truth.
^^ sarcasm...

-Just make some up some weak excuse saying that you heard that some iPhones have screen issues from a certain batch and you don't want to get one.. -Let them try to tell you otherwise, they know there are series 7 and seris 5 screens

-The lie will set you free!

There's nothing wrong with requesting the specific item you're paying for. When you get older you learn the power of the consumer by standing up for yourself to employees. I'm guessing you haven't tried this yet. Try it, it's a great experience. Not trying to burn you but being serious. As a consumer you have a right to request certain things (Within certain boundaries) and you can request to look at the back of the box, look at digit 4 and 5 and send the employee back to get another box. Perhaps tell him what you are specifically looking for so you both don't waste your time.

Edit: of course don't tell him you're trying to avoid the new version so you can unlock it. Tell him you want an old version of 1.0.2 until everyone has uncovered all the 1.1.1 bugs and fixed them. Don't let them tell you there are no bugs because the "Geniuses" aren't software developers and don't know about such matters. If they question you tell them you're a MIT graduate or something or tell them it's personal preference and would make you happy and that should be the end of discussion.

Your best bet would probably buy the iPhone from an AT&T store. Last Friday I bought two iPhones from an AT&T store that was a week "28" phone and the next day I went an bought another iPhone from the Apple store and it was a week "32" phone. So it seems that the AT&T stores have an older stock of phones than the Apple stores.

Does anyone know how to tell what the FW for refurb phones since they are diff serial no.?

Posted by: ahuang722

Just came back from SF Apple Store and got the one with the serial number 38. Just walked in and ask for an iPhone and it was serial number 38 and asked for my name.

Posted by: sp887

Just Picked up an 8gb on Sunday from our local Apple store and it had Week 39 (7R739....) and it is indeed version 1.0.2 so unless they are resealing them or something because I am able to unlock and load mine.

Posted by: marktang

like I said before because the new firmware was out in the middle of week 39 not all week 39 phones are on 1.1.1. So it is a 50/50 chance you are taking

Posted by: ahuang722

Is the serial number 38 100% will be version 1.0.2? I still didn't open it.

Posted by: bobadilla03

Hmm..I think there is a way to downgrade it. Has restored his phone like 10 times..and today I was watching him do it and it asked him what firm does he want and he pressed 1.0.2 ..

I'm wondering the same, or is it safer to get a week 37 just in case?

Great, thanks a lot for the info, I'll try to get a week 37 to be safe.

Posted by: anthony002

thanks.

Posted by: 3.2vtec

I have a 7r738, so week 38 and it was 1.0.2. from las vegas. but im not 100% sure all week 38s are 1.0.2

Posted by: ahuang722

Just open my iPhone and it was version 1.0.2

Posted by: pdditty

Just bought one from an AT&T store in Philly and it was a week "32" phone. Just buy from AT&T not Apple for now.
