EDGE not configured, but still getting data charges?

I'm on cellular one with my iPhone and today I went online to review my account. To my surprise, it said that I've been using data (not much, only around 500KB) but still I'm going to get charged 3 cents a KB for that!

How is this even possible? I went into the edge settings and put in bogus settings. I'm not even sure if cellular one even uses EDGE, so is the iPhone capable of GPRS??? Also I tried to use the internet with WIFI off and wasn't successful so obviously the EDGE settings aren't right. What's going on here? Is this just a fault of cellular ones?

Also I've seen some people say that SMS (texting) uses EDGE. Does it or not? If it does, it MIGHT explain this but like I said the EDGE settings aren't right so how would it work?

all gsm phones are capable of gprs......

So will I have to tell cellular one to disable this? I don't want to pay for a data plan. But I'm still confused, how is gprs even working? (if thats what it is)

They are almost certainly charging you for trying to resolve the bogus pop information. There is still some data chatter going on before the session is fully up, looks like they are including this in your data usage.

Seems a bit sly to include the actual negotiation of the connection in your data usage though.

Call them and have them disable it, or instead of being cheap get yourself on a data plan.

:-)

I notice when I gave my wife my old palm treo, a data plan suddenly became active. It is set on a pay as you go deal. We never call and activate it. Sneaky ATT!

Why would I pay for their crappy GPRS? lol

Does this happens even if you don't enter any EDGE settings at all? I've never entered them to avoid such charges.

I hope I don't get charges for any "lookup" with the network... at these crazy prices (0,05$/kb)...
