Im not sure if this have been answered or not. But Im like five minutes away from an ATT store and I want to know if I can goto the store and purchase the device straght up without signing a contract. I know I can goto a Apple Store but Im not that sure about an ATT store.

I bought my phone at an AT&T store. I did NOT have to sign up for anything or activate the phone before walking out the door with a sealed, un-activated, brand new phone.

So to answer you, you CAN buy the phone at an AT&T store and not be locked into their service. That happens when you activate the phone through iTunes.

To make it a quick transaction just say your buying it as a gift.

Great.. What Im going to do then is check the serial number on the box to make sure I have a week 38 or later iphone.. Because from what Ive been reading week 39 iphones have the new software updates on them, and of course cant be unlocked

"I will make sure that they gvie me a iphone that have week 38 or younger "

HUH? You what? English much?

From what Ive been reading Apple have been shipping iphones with the new software update 1.1.1 .. On the box it shows the serial number for the first two numbers and the second ones is the week the iphone was made in so for example 7134000.. 34 is the week of the iphone so more than likely i will have an old firmware so i can unlock the phone. But if the serial number is 7140000. Than anything more than 39 will be higher to have the new software updates

To answer your original question, you cannot sign a contract at the store even if you wanted to. It's all done through itunes, your contract, setting up the number, everything. You don't have to give them an excuse, just buy the phone.

Hello, I really want to buy the iphone, but have 1 ?, If i buy it unlocked, from the att store and activate it through itunes, what will this give me? what is the result of activating through itunes?? I am sticking to ATT, but all i want is my youtube and wifi without the $20 a month data plan. Is this possible with activation through itunes?

As said many times before, when you activate the phone, you WILL sign up with a data plan. You don't get a choice, I'm afraid, even with the Go Phone, because the iPhone automatically switches to EDGE if it can't get WiFi.

If all you want is WiFi, you might be better off with a iPod Touch. If you have to have a phone, then the iPhone plans are it.

So as I get it, if you activate through itunes, you have to go with the data plan with no choice, rite?

but if i want the youtube and use wireless internet (wifi) as my internet signal on the iphone, do i need to bypass activation and unlock the phone?

If you are going to do that, just buy a iPod Touch. You can't use the WiFi without activation, and even unlocking the phone doesn't prevent it from using EDGE.
