I recently purchased an iphone. It will be here tomorrow

I know it is going to have 1.1.1 firmware on it.

Im looking for the best way to downgrade, and activate it.

I do not care to change the baseband because I don't plan on using the phone functions. Got it to use as a pda.

I plan on downgrading it through itunes as it is stated in many tutorials. Has anyone had good luck with this?
Could I then upgrade back to 1.1.1 in case I need to take it back to apple for repairs without them knowing?

Once downgraded I will have the activate iphone, please connect to itunes bullcrap. What is the best method to activate it? I have heard about either jailbreak, or dvd john's modified itunes version. What way can be easily reversed in the same case I would have to take it to apple ?
