HTC Kaiser vs AT&T Tilt

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: DDavidA

Hi,

Does anyone know if the Kaiser, in addition to GSM and HSDPA, also has the HSUPA networking capability like the AT&T Tilt? I just saw this on the spec sheet for the Tilt, but didn't recall seeing it on the HTC version.

Thanks.

Hardware wise, the phones are identical. If the Tilt can support HSUPA, then so can the Kaiser. It might take a ROM or Radio upgrade, but it can. And yes, the chipset in both phones does support HSUPA.

since this is a unlocked vs carrier specific thread on the Kaiser...

Anyone know if the ATT Tilt is restricted in any way compared to the Kaiser besides the sim lock (which I can just call up cingular and get unlocked)... is there a difference between the $800 TyTN II that I can but overseas vs the Tilt which I can get for half that price through AT&T...

are you sure they will unlock it for u? i'm trying to decide between the kaiser and tilt too

overall if you don't care about the front cam and have no problems with taking the plunge and flashing to a different ROM when its possible, then go with the Tilt (price wise) if these things do matter then get the HTC version

I imported mine and just popped my iPhone SIM card in. Doing this allows me to keep the iPhone data plan...which is cheaper.

I don't recall having to do anything additional other than powering on the device. Works great so far!

I labored over the same issue until I ordered the Kaiser, just yesterday...

-- Yes, you can get the Tilt from AT&T full price at about $600 (in my case close to $1000) since I have a premier account...but remember you have to get it unlocked. I think it would take sometime before ATT would begin giving out unlocked codes for this device (that is if they have them).... It would mean you have to use cooked roms or other means of getting it unlocked.. (and if you are not comfortable with this, you can brick your phone)...

Secondly, ATT is not willing to sell the phone without a plan, even if you buy full price..(at least thats what I got from calling stores and customer service)

so to save myself the hussle, I went ahead and ordered the Kaiser....it was close to $720 with all applicable discounts...

That's what the rep told me. I told them that I travel international al ot and I need to use local carrier sims, they said just call intl dept and they'll get it working and unlocked for me. I'm not too worried since HTC phones are not that hard to unlock (unlike the iPhone and it's bricking firmware).

as for using the iphone data plan... that means I'd have to first purchase an iphone... and even if I sold it at the same price, I wouldn't be able to get the tilt at $299.... plus I have a corporate 15% off service charges, so that makes up for the added cost of the $40 data plan and then some.

So far, the only difference besides the software packages (telenav vs tomtom, games bundle, and att specific software), is the lack of a front camera for the tilt (even though reports say the pic calling service is enabled on ATT's network). I have never used picture calling before, and don't plan to, but it would be pretty cool I guess.

Pros with Tilt:
-Insurance on the phone
-Easy warranty coverage/replacements
-PRICE
-ATT specific software (unsure if it can be loaded into the TyTN II.

Pros with TyTN II:
-Phone allowance kickback from small retailers will offset cost of this $800 device (although not sure if I can still get the 15% discount if I go this route)
-front camera (video calls enabled)

The main thing for me is the warranty and insurance coverage on the phone, althought the front camera is nice, I wonder if I can still have video calling, using the back camera, and a bluetooth headset.

Not to mention the resell value of the Kaiser. You won't get much back on the AT&T version. But an unbranded/unlocked phone always commands top dollar. I am overseas now and using the Kaiser with no problems. I just don't like the white keys on the 8925 - not to mention I couldn't use the 8925 here anyway.

if you get a carrier phone, and unlock it, it'll fetch the same price almost... the main difference is the camera.

Please help
Is it True
u cant Edit Excel sheet in the At&t Tilt

Posted by: Urthwhyte

No, Office Mobile is included.

Posted by: huskyfan23

It looks like the Tilt lacks TouchFLO, which TyTn II/Kaiser has.

Posted by: piggity

does anyone know if the Tilt has the same today screen option as the tytn? One of the things I really like about the Tytn is the HTC today plugin. From the pics I have seen of the tilt it doesn't, but not sure if they still left the HTC option for the today screen.

Posted by: huskyfan23

The TyTn II? That's the TouchFLO interface. I don't think the Tilt has it.

Yes, via FCC regulation more than a year ago, phone carriers are to provide you with unlock instructions upon request. Just for the heck of it, I called AT&T earlier today to confirm and they confirmed the process.

No way! An unbranded/unlocked phone will always get more greenbacks than a branded phone, regardless if it's unlocked.

Posted by: i880/8525junkie

AT&T can unlock it for u..but it's a tiring process...after that..The Kaiser has the front facing camera and the HTC Software on it (Audio Manager, HTC Home, Network Wizard) which is better then AT&T's crap. I want the Kaiser this time b/c if for chance WM7 comes out...U kno HTC will release their update LONG before AT&T does (hence why the TyTn/hermes has the WM6 Upgrade out already while the 8525 has only been leaked..still not out...they promised 3rd Quarter 2007...it's the 4th quarter already!)

can you verify this?? would getting Either the tilt or kaiser matter as long as you have an Iphone sim??? id like to get the Tilt or kaiser and use my current iphone plan

Posted by: beademcee

Follow the link and you can download the HTC HomeScreen on your AT&T Tilt. You should also download the Black Wallpaper Theme. Both our available as a CAB file so you can actually download it directly to your 8925 from the site. I found this one to be the cleanest and simplest install.

I'd be happy to verify it....if I know exactly how I would do that. I literally took my SIM from the iPhone and put it in the HTC TyTn II (unlocked). Works like a charm.

But do you get 3G service on the HTC or just EDGE?

Posted by: Urthwhyte

Both the Tilt and the Kaiser have 3G. Everything is identical on the models except for the lack of a front camera on the Tilt, as well as its SIM and CID lock.

Actually, I meant to ask that if you take the SIM from the iphone and place it in the TyTnII, does the TyTnII receive 3G or just EDGE service with the iphone data plan? I thought you needed 3G provisioned on the account...

Posted by: Urthwhyte

That's incorrect, you will get the highest speed signal available.

you forgot TOM TOM

Posted by: AznAtama

tomtom taster is like a trial version... and tomtom navigator 6 will work with the tilt. I don't consider trial or commercial software something missing since it can easily be installed... the HTC Home is one thing that I may have considered a "missing" feature if it wern't for the cab file release on xda.

you can possibly brick your phone by hacking it though, and it seems like you don't know what you're doing, so you may want to do some mor reading before you start.

I too would like to know about the business card OCR software and where to get it!!!

still dont know How
