New Sidekick Dev Team

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: H@<K0R

as stated above, im starting a sidekick dev (development) team.
here re the requirements:
1)knows how to program (at least C or C++. NAM would also be great)
2)Has a sidekick (1, 2, 3, ID, LX, or Slide)
3)Has access to a computer
4)Can be dedicated to developing and programming
5)Keeps in contact with his/her team
6)Knows what he/she is talking about
7)Common knowledge of the sidekick (like how big the screen is lol)

the dev team will be based of sidekick dev kits and hopefully unlock the sidekicks OS.
from threre, we can run unsigned code (homebrew) on our phones.
then the next part would be to create homebrew applications.

i am currently working on way to load linux on the sidekick by replacing the OS or (when proper keys are pressed, it loads linux) we will use free ISO, IMG, etc files and try to boot either DLX or DSL linux (seeing as though they can both be emulated with an x86 emulater and they both dont require alot of memory and alot of RAM.

the sidekick 3 has 60MB of RAM which only about 1/2 is actually being used.
That gives us 30MB of development space. with 30MB of RAM (although it will be dangerous to completely use the RAM. which will drain the phone ALOT quicker than normal) we can easily run Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, Windows 2000, Mac OS 7, and alot of linux kernels.
hell if we wanted, we can use about 8MB of RAM and still load Windows XX(XX), Mac OS 7, and alot of linux kernel. but the more RAM we give it, the faster it processes.

well, if you want to join, you can either post it here or send me a message on this site.

Why not netbsd?

Don't know much about sidekicks. Never had one. Always have liked them. The one thing that has prevented me from getting them is the fact you are limited with them.

What kind of freedom does the dev kit give you? Why do you have to unlock the os? I thought people have been running homebrew apps on the sidekick for some time now.

Good luck.

samsung.user:
yes unfortunately you are very limited with them.
dev kits give you a development table that lets you easily program applications for the device. but alot of people dont know how to use them.

everything is restricted to the OS so its technically impossible to run anything without it having an approved signature. So technically, if you can unlock the Sidekick OS, you have 100% freedom to hatever is on the phone....such as NAM, internel memory, and so on.

as i said, nope. no sidekick homebrew because people either dont know how to prgram or its to difficult to use. i find it simple but alot of people dont have time to understand it because it is its on programming language mixed with C and C++. and then the applications are converted into bootable java applications with a dummy signature.

donniesd:
thank you. i will try my best lol.

I have a SK2 i am more than willing to test your apps on it.But it will need a dev key.

I think that you are sadly mistaken about what is possible, or even the most basic things about Sidekicks.

Just saying...

I wish you the best of luck, but I have a general question.

Why do people spend so much time beating against a locked device (iphone / sidekick) when there are devices like Open Moko that give you EVERYTHING you need to make brilliant projects for end users..

just a thought .. i mean if you want to work on phones make java apps for unlocked devices, winmo programs for the plethora of HTC devices, linux apps for Open Moko and the like .. why keep playing a cat and mouse game with large companies that obviously don't like you ..

What I want to know is why people always bring the unreleased, for developer only, OpenMoko in the conversation when talking about the iPhone or the Sidekick...

From OpenMoko's own site :

What you CAN NOT expect yet

* reliable means of making phone calls, esp. not from the UI
* reliable means of sending/receiving SMS, esp. not from the UI
* integrated GPRS data access
* proper power management (i.e. no reasonable battery life yet)
* ringtone (or other) profile management
* a complete application framework where third party application developers can write apps that easily integrate with the OpenMoko world

And the list goes on...

I know that the Sidekick or iPhone are locked and that some functions are unavailable, but common... Most users do not want applications to "work" they want to pirate them, and I am speaking as a software developer here. The hiptop and the iPhone platform (when they allow third party apps) are godsend for mobile developers. You don't see OpenGameboys out there, and this is why Nintendo makes money... Danger and Apple hope to do the same with the multibillion mobile gaming/application market.

Posted by: manchuia

hrm .. i think you misunderstood me

As far as a business perspective is concerned .. yes the sidekick and iphone are a great idea and a fully support their methods. I never once thought that they should be open for illegally pirated software.

a bit of personal background: I pay for all mobile software I get because i want to support that small software company trying to make it in this industry (that is very rough to navigate)

my comment was not to go against the SK / software business model, but merely to ask why are you playing in someone's pool that OBVIOUSLY doesn't want you there. There are other avenues for you to show off your skill / programming talent (Open Moko was an example as they are encouraging any and all development.. not mentioned as a device similar or competitvely marketed against the sidekick) than beating against a solidly locked wall like the iphone or sidekick.

That's all

oooohhhh argument going on......
and technically it is possible. the sidekick has to boot from some main image file (and from that menu, i now know it boots from a .ROM image file)
that means i will have to convert the image to a .ROM file using 3d excelleration software. from their, i just have to make the sidekick load that ROM file instead. and from their, tada accessed linux.

This is not ever ever ever ever ever going to happen. You will never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever break the key used to sign the developer keys. You will also never have a fully functional Linux OS on the Hiptop. Get over it. Move on with your life. You don't even have the ****ing terminology down or English for that matter.

The sidekick 3 has 60 MB of ram.. wrong. 64mb. You want to load WINDOWS on your Hiptop?? Damn Small Linux? What the ****?!

Basically, You're a ****ing idiot. Stop taking up space on the internet and in the world. Thanks. You're wasting all the smart people's oxygen... Stop using it.

Please clear something up for me H@<KOR.

The Sidekick development kits are freely distributed by danger right? And one begins to develop an application for the sidekick. He can easily test his application on his sidekick, or allow others to test. Or is this not possible?

The Developer can either choose to test his application in the Simulator, or if he has received his allocation of Developer Keys, test it on a device.

Thanks. Googled a few things from the information in your post and came across some danger developer forum. Much more available on sidekicks than I originally thought. People have opera mini, a way to view google maps. I'm sure the interest will increase in app development once the new sidekicks are released.

Can't wait to hear some reviews on the lx when it comes out. The color is sick and has a 3.5mm jack, qwerty, and nice screen. Far from a piece of crap. $500 is pretty steep, but have to wait for the reviews.

the closest i got to having linux on my sk3 was installing it to the sdcard and booting it from usb, but thats just using the mass storage aspect of the sk3 not actually having it boot from the fone itself... using the 2gb sdcard i have slackware with ext3fs that im able to boot off of and still have space for some music and pics and themes...

It takes a little more than that, seeing has it has been done before.

http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~borisov/linux.html

Just fidling with .rom files (in a 3d acceleration software?) won't cut it.

Posted by: pookis

This might not be completely relevent, but do any of you know how to install MIDP 2.0 onto a Sidekick 3? If you do, you will solve the problem that I have had forever lol thanks if you know

Posted by: H@<K0R

ok its been a long time hasnt it.
im back and i moved lol.

made alot of progress though. i did get a semi form a linux running on it. BUT the keyboard doesnt work and now when ever i turn it on, the linux kernels load and the phone doesnt work (it will only load linux and not the original rom) so my sidekick is broken.

i got the iphone now so my sidekick work is pretty much over.

Posted by: kingrome_1

i got a sk3 an some time a a member of the danger dev site and want to start testing

the sidekick 2 already has linux on it. (or linux has already been modded to it) but still, that version of linux was only linux kernels and not actually linux.

what do you want for it?
