"As part of AT&T's 2008 launch plans for the Carolinas, the company is also scheduled to deploy its 3G broadband network in Jacksonville, N.C., Greenville, S.C., Spartanburg, S.C. and Clemson. S.C"

Sounds like most of SC will be finished early next year.

Great news ... thanks for the link. I guess I can quit making excuses to hang on to the old 8125 now and get an 8525 or 8925. It was my last remaining excuse.

Posted by: outz

AT&T expanding 3G broadband to Charleston and Upstate

Thursday, 10 April 2008

GREENVILLE -- AT&T Inc. plans to invest more than $30 million in its South Carolina network in 2008 by expanding wireless coverage and upgrading to the higher-speed network that is currently available in Columbia. The planned investment will bring AT&T's three-year network investment in the state for wireless and wired services to $750 million.

AT&T plans to roll out its higher-speed third-generation (3G) wireless network in Charleston, Greenville, Spartanburg and Clemson by the end of June. New cell sites will be added to the more than 330 cell sites that have already been deployed throughout the past four years. The primary focus for these additional sites is to expand coverage in Charleston and improve service in Columbia and Greenville.

"Our goal is to continue providing high-quality coverage by significantly improving our network with additional cell sites in markets such as Charleston and 3G upgrades in our metro areas," said Alison Hall, vice president and general manager for AT&T's wireless operations in the
Carolinas. "After our aggressive cell site build-out in Columbia and Greenville, as well as in rural areas throughout South Carolina, we now
have a better opportunity for customers to experience our network improvements firsthand. This year's investment is a testament of our
continued momentum."

The company also will open four company-owned retail stores in 2008. AT&T currently operates 20 company-owned retail stores in the state, in addition to offering products and services through authorized agents and national retailers, including Best Buy, Sam's Club, Wal-Mart and Costco.

"As we continue to maximize our network, we want new and current customers to have convenient access to all of our products and services,
both wireless and wireline, as well as quality customer service," Hall said.

The 3G wireless network makes it possible for customers to use 3G handsets to quickly access feature-rich wireless content -- including
videos, games, pictures and the latest music, entertainment, news and weather.

AT&T's 3G customers also can take advantage of Video Share, a technology that allows users to share live video during a wireless call. The AT&T 3G network also offers AT&T LaptopConnect for mobile customers to use their laptops with the ability to send and receive large files and access the Internet, their company's intranet and corporate e-mail from anywhere within the 3G network.

It's live! at least in Duncan (between Greenville and Spartanburg in Spartanburg county).

great news. i sold all of my 3g capable phones

Posted by: jmpmntwnty3

I was like O_O when my phone said 3G last night. I thought it was an error, but I turned it off, and turned it back on, and it stayed that way! It said 3G for most of the day too, but now it's back to EDGE. I live in Simpsonville, SC (suburbs of Greenville) by the way. This is perfect ... just in time for next week's iPhone release =D

Posted by: Hierophant

Back on EDGE here also as of about 2 hours ago . Ah well, at least I know they have the towers upgraded and are ready to flip the switch soon.

Posted by: panasummer

June 1st was the official launch date for 3g here in the upstate. The voice servers crashed and people with 3g phones couldnt make or receive calls for a few hours, so I guess they turned it off. Hopefully they'll turn it back on soon because I'm going to buy a 3g phone

do they have plans to bring 3G a little further east....like ... Rock Hill (York County)?

Posted by: TruBlu01

I received an email about 2 months ago from the ATT Project Manager for the Carolinas and the citys that are on the list are Greenville/Spartanburg and Clemson. I live in Anderson, so I'm screwed, however, I may be able to catch a little Clemson 3G. (hopefully). I was in Greenville last week and 3G appeared on my phone, hit the internet and it changed to H. Speed was nice too.

Has anyone heard if 3G will be stretched over to the Rock Hill area?

Posted by: gosc21

I have no idea when they did the Charlotte 3G why they left Rock Hill out. Hopefully they will add it soon

Posted by: anthonyjhd

Yea it would have made a lot of sense to do that, but it looks like on their coverage viewer they went out east and west from Charlotte then north or south. Maybe it will come soon though.

I'm not counting on it. Isn't AT&T wrapping up their 3G deployment to begin work on LTE? I think us Rock Hill residents are probably SOL. Although if AT&T said something different I'd consider jumping from Sprint. I was just in Heath Springs and had EVDO on Sprint. Unbelievable.

Sprint has pretty good EVDO in the upper part of SC (Lancater, Heath Springs, Chester). Alltel has basically the whole state of SC covered in EVDO.

In Rock Hill, the network and spectrum belongs to the local telephone co. (forgot the name) who uses at&t brandname. Same thing in Concord. It is up to them to deploy 3G in those areas. That is why Charlotte 3G coverage looks odd.

Thats how sprint is in my area, and the end result is suckiness. No SERO, and no EVDO outside the city, hell we JUST got EVDO last year

I'm work at the local paper in RH and have had some discussions with some Comporium officials on the subject. Whole this was true, shortly before the AT&T complete buyout of Bellsouth, they turned over the reaponsibility of network deployment to Cingular. I've been told by numerous people at Comporium that new towers and spectrum are now the responsibility of AT&T.

anyone know about Florence, SC?

Charleston, Columbia, and Myrtle Beach all have 3G, but Florence is in the middle and has nothing! EDGE blows after going to MYB for a few days using 3G :-/
