V3 Doesn't recognize SIM & MPT can't find phone?

Thought someone maybe could lend some ideas. "Old" V3 just crapped out. I have another one as a spare so it's no big deal really, but I would like to get the photos and ringtones off my old phone. (No ... I didn't save them when I linked with MPT while the phone was working .. silly me!) The phone powers up but asks for a SIM card and stops. I've tried friends SIM cards and my card works in other phones so I'm stumped. I am willing to take both phones apart to mix and match parts to try to make it work, but don't know which ones or how to. Any help would be appreciated.

if it powers up try connecting with p2kcommander and then you can transfer the files, unlike MPT p2kcommander need to phone to be recognized by the p2kdrivers even when it is stuck half way.
