Just bought a Tilt.. what do I need to know?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

First time using an HTC product (albeit an AT&T branded one), let alone a WM6 device.

Hoping you guys can provide me with useful hints/tips/programs to make my experience that much better!

Spent some time reading these forums, but a lot of the posts that make reference to anything technical usually are written from the viewpoint of someone already familiar with these products, so I'm sorry for the newbie post.

Looking forward to hopefully becoming an active participant here!

question for you...

Is there GPS software on that phone? I read in the ATT website that they have a telenav service for $10/mo with an excerpt that said (may require bluetooth GPS reciever for some phones) which leads me to believe that they charge forthe GPS service... can you verify that it works or if software is included?

Also, the PTT button.. does it work? or do you ahve to pay for PTT to work with ATT?

thanks!!

Posted by: SlightlyTilted

I ordered online today via AT&T's premier website, I'll confirm the following once I actually have it in my hands-

My understanding regarding the GPS, based on what AT&T listed and what I've read in a review specific to the Tilt, is that they charge for telenav but if you use something like googlemaps it would work for free and just use data (so you need a data plan).
If you use telenav it's $5.99 a month for 10 routes. $9.99 a month for unlimited routes.

I wasn't planning on using PTT, honestly, but I'll double check if it's a feature I can add and then drop without penalty. If so, I'll test it out for you if no one else does. It's $9.99 a month.

I just got mine today. They have the telenav service, but you can use TomTom Navigator. I have seen shots of it running on the WM6 device, but I haven't yet put it on mine. I've started a quick blog about my 8925, I'll post TomTom pictures this weekend when I get it up and running.

Whatever you pay, i paid $349.00, Prepare to pay More $$$ for Headset and Case!!!

SHAME ON YOU HTC and AT&T!!!

Posted by: x26

TeleNav sucks bad,
But livesearch works incredibly good...

Posted by: AznAtama

I would prefer to get my own case, I never liked the included cases anyways. I also already own a Jawbone, so no worries about a headset there, an included headset would be inferior to the jawbone anyways.

So, I paid retail? $599

Buy a bluetooth headset? Buy an 8525 case?

It depends on the region, the asian version (english version) comes with ce-star program and the chinese version does not come with any GPS program

which reg editor and where is the hsdpa on it?

Posted by: joeblaschka

Telenav and the other GPS software is only as good as the satellite picture service they took the download off of. I live in the seattle area (actually more towards the mountains) and i haven't had any real problems using telenav.

The included wired stereo headset that came with the HTC TYTN II works very nicely. I use it all the time when I am in the gym on the treadmill to listen to audio books.

Posted by: kms-lai

I agree with ike, the headset supplied with the tytn ii, is cheap and nasty, the ones you get with the p3600i and the touch is a lot better, infact the one you get with the touch is also sold as a optional accessories, which is shown in the accessories book that comes with tytn ii.

If you are all adventurous.. take a trip over to xda developers, they have a number of custom cooked roms for the device, based off of the oem roms. Not for the light hearted, but it will get rid of the ATT crapware that gets installed, or hell you can build your own (if your technically inclined). As for the gps, its a chip, hardwired into the phone, using a comm port. Any software for the PPC will be able to utilize it, and when you think about it, if you are paying $9.99 a month for telenav, thats almost $120 a year, you can purchase garmin or tom tom software for less (although when you add traffic features and such those are monthly fees, but I do not know if telenav actually includes traffic data or any decent points of interest).

Okay so which is better... HTC Home or SPB Mobile Shell?

Where is the youtube hack?

So far the only things I've installed are Opera and Googlemaps. I've done the GPS photo hack too.

Posted by: Eckono

I got the youtube hack from WM-experts.com go there and search youtube it will come up. Its easy to do. They have the files there for download and everything. I'm currently searching for a browser similar to safari. I haven't found one yet, but opera mini 4 is kinda close. The graphics are horrible but it scrolls like safari. I want to get the HTC home but I'm afraid to load it on because I heard you have to load a different ROM which could possible brick your Tilt. So instead of taking that chance, I just loaded mobile Shell.

Posted by: SlightlyTilted

From what I've read you should be able to load HTC Home with the AT&T ROM.

I installed Opera 8.65 and it crashes on me.

I also just switched from googlemaps to windows live due to the new version having speech recognition and gas prices!

Posted by: lordvaderr

The GPS works just like the TOM TOM
No complians there

But when ur talking on the Phone the Voice is Too LOW

There are some pros and cons to which GPS software to use. If you use telenav, it's only $6 (10 routes) or $10 (unlimited). It also doesnt take up space on a memory card and updates the maps all the time with new streets, addresses and businesses. There is no charge for traffic data or POI's.
If you use tomtom or iguidance, etc, the maps are old in a year and these take up valuable memory card space.

im sorry the site has no dash. its wmexperts.com search youtube and the cabs should come up. Its a TCPMP Cab and a flash Bundle.

I used the Resco Reg editor. If you go to xda-developers .com they list the steps to enabling hsdpa on the Tilt. It's very easy to do, I just don't remember the exact steps.

I've been running the HTC Home for close to two weeks now on my Tilt with no problems & no ROM hacking.

At xda-developers.com under Kaiser, there is a 'sticky' thread for latest .cab files. The HTC Home file there is solid & safe.

Also there is another thread with a handy program called "Kaiser Tweak" that gives you quick access to some of the common registry changes... such as HSPDA on, touchflo sensitivity, memory cache, battery meter/clock switch, and so on.

My employer's IT department is taking a hard line that I have to use Blackberry Connect if I get a Tilt. (I just joined the company, so there's no legacy device constraining the decision.)

OK, so how about these thoughts:

TIA. I look forward t contributing tips & tricks after I actually get into this....

Best,

Posted by: Slider76

I am also interested in how BB Connect works in conjunction with the TyTn II. My understanding from the reading I have done so far is that while BB Connect is running, you have access to your email, SMS and of course, PIN messages. To do anything else, you have to manually disconnect from BB Connect.

Hopefully someone can clarify as I am sitting on the fence at the moment.

Posted by: whitneybroach

Hmmm, I think I can answer my own 2nd bullet. IM+ is an application that runs on RIM and that uses the data path, not SMS. That devices uses Blackberry service. Ergo, data-pathed IM is supported by BB carrier service.

Plausible?

So far what I've noticed while using bberry connect on the tilt is that it carrys a separate internet connection from regular browsing. If you are connected to bbconnect and try to browse the web, the tilt will have to connect via media net. If you stay on a page too long and navigate away, it will connect back to bberry and you will have to connect via media net all over again. Hopefully there is a fix that maybe I'm missing.

I downloaded a ROM from the xda.developers site, and it bricked my first Tilt. I had to send it back for a new one.
