Tilt with existing data plan?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

This question is similar to the one posted from the fellow with the blue SIM card. I am just up on my 2yr. 2yr ago I got a Nokia 6682, then went to a N80, now on an E61. I have the $19.99 unlimited MediaNet plan and it has always worked fine, even tethered. I have a 64K smartchip (orange with blue letters, Cingular branding)

I went to an AT&T store today to see about the Tilt. They said that my current data plan will not work. I have to get their $39.99 data plan. He said that they would give me a new sim card to make it work better. I could still use my 'old' sim card but I would be charged per usage for the data connection. Anybody know any truth to this?

Thanks for the help.

Roger

You should be fine just throwing it into the Tilt.

I have an 8125 and the same data plan as you.
AT&T exchanged my Cingular 3G SIM for the new AT&T 3G SIM for free.

Now I'm looking to upgrade my 8125 to an 8925.

HiTek, when you got your 8925, did your dealer give you a hard time about your data plan? Did they tell you that you needed the PDA data plan?

Like I mentioned, I'm looking to get an 8925, but I'm concerned about having to change my existing data plan to match my new phone when I upgrade.

i didnt get it from a dealer just in case they gave me a hard time about my current data plan. i bought it from the at&t website

Any data plan will work on the Tilt. If the dealer makes you switch, let them. Just log on to OLAM at AT&T.com, go to "add/manage features" and change it back to Media Max.
Go check it out now, you'll see the option there. You should still have the option to select it even if they make you switch to PDA Max.

The $19.99 medianet plan works just fine. I told the guy at the ATT store that if he dicked with my plan, I wouldn't buy the phone. He was insisting that it wouldn't work with this phone. I pulled my 8525 out and showed him it worked fine. He was surprised, so when these salespeople tell you it won't work, I suspect they've been mis-trained. He left my plan alone. Typically though if they change your plan, you can just log into your ATT account online and change it back.

so it wont make a difference if i use my old sim or the new sim that came with the phone? is there any advantage to using the new one?

not that I've found. I'm still using my old 64K "non 3G" branded SIM. I was given new "3G" ones with the past two phones I've purchased, but never activated them.

BTW with the medianet plan, you'll need to change your GPRS settings to use wap.cingular instead of isp.cingular.

Speaking of SIM cards, I read a post here on HoFo saying that if you don't activate the new SIM card that comes with a new phone, it doesn't count as an Equipment Upgrade ... meaning that you won't have to wait your full contract period for another equipment upgrage.

Does anyone know if this is true?
If this is true, then this would be a good reason to not use a new SIM with a new phone, and to use your existing SIM.

I'm planning to use my existing SIM out of my 8125 when I get my 8925. I've already made sure that I had the latest and greatest SIM that I could get AT&T to give me. I'm almost positive that my existing SIM will work (as others have already mentioned) ... I'm just curious to see if this will have any effect on my next equipment upgrade date.

I'm eligible for an equipment upgrade in next February and I can hardly wait to upgrade to an 8925. I'm doing my research now to make sure I do the equipment upgrade in the smartest way possible ... and I'm also waiting for more 8925 accessories to become available.

I'm pretty certain that regardless of whether you activate your SIM or not, it counts at the time you order/purchase the phone and it goes into their system. I'm still using my SIM from a Nokia 6620. When I bought my HP HW6515, I never activated the new SIM, yet it was still on record as having an additional 2 year contract. I would assume that's the same thing that triggers the equipment upgrade date.

robr, I was just about to ask you about your experience with this.

I think that the equipment upgrade date is independent of the contract period.

My 2 year contract is up next June, but OLAM says I'm eligible for an equipment upgrade next February. When I log onto OLAM and click on "Upgrade Equipment", it tells me that I am not eligible for an upgrade, but also tells me when I am eligible.

Can you check your OLAM and see if your equipment upgrade date coincides with your contract date?

Can you check

No, it doesn't matter. You'll use up your equipment upgrade whether you use the new SIM or not. Your upgrade flag will be set back to 'none' and 18-20 months from now you should get upgrade status back. Unless you have Premier in which case you should be able to upgrade earlier in most cases.

Whats the reason for doing this?

reason for what? using a $20 medianet plan to save money, or not activating my sims? no reason for the latter other than it seemed a waste of time, the former is pretty obvious .

Yes. Speed capability is not at all related to data plans. If your phone and the network can do it, you'll get it.

OK, that makes sense.

But who sets the upgrage flag? Is it automatically set to match your premiere eligibilities, or does the salesperson set it manually when you buy a new phone (in store)?

I have a Premiere account, but my upgrade date seems to be the same as non-Premiere. If the upgrade flag is set by the salesperson, then I think my last salesperson didn't check my Premiere upgrade eligibilities, and just put in the standard 18-20 month upgrade eligibility.

Is there a way to get a definitive answer on what my Premiere upgrade eligibilities are? Every time I ask AT&T Business support, they just seem to give me standard non-Premiere answers without really checking what I'm actually eligible for on my Premiere account.
