The Tilt and YOUR thoughts

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

What are your thoughts on the phone for those who have it? I was at a Cingular Corp Store last night and a rep had one... The phone has a REAL nice weight to it and it feels sturdy. I also like the Black Finish.

Please no people who just read other reviews just to add to there post count. People who actually have the phone please reply.

Thanks

Had mine for exactly 24 hours. So far I like it a lot. Has a couple of little quirks and minor bugs but nothing so far that's going to make me take it back.

With thing I have noticed is that the radio on it doesn't seem as good as the 8125 or 8525. I'm not getting near the signal strength I would with my last two devices.

Just my 0.02.

I got mine yesterday afternoon and so far it is great. Slightly smaler and a little more rounded than the 8525 which gives it a great feel. I am still getting a little used to the d-pad buttons more so because they are opposite the 8525. so far it seems stable although I really only have ilauncher on thus far. GPS not being locked is a huge plus. Finally I had to travel this weekend to nrothwest NJ and reception is holding solid. To me it is another great HTC product and a worthy upgrade over the 8525. I will be tyrying BB Connect out on Monday which has the chance to make this phone perfect for me. I would highly recommend it to anyone loking for a pocketpc. One thing I would say if you haven't owned an 8525 or the like, give it a chance to get used to. You can easily dial one handed from the touchscreen and there isn't a better keyboard out there. If anyone has any questions please let me know and I wil do my best. I won't be back in 3G territory until tomorrow to really start taking advantage of it, but I can give opinion's on most things.

I picked up the Tilt yesterday, mainly to just try it out. I was actually pleasantly surprised with it. Weight isn't as heavy as previous models and it is smaller as well. I have been a huge Blackberry fan for years, so it was an adjustment and I am sure I didn't give it enough time. I returned it today, it's just hard when one is used to a Blackberry. The one thing that I didn't care for at all was the speaker quality. When I was on the phone and would put the caller on speaker, it wasn't good at all. Also, the volume could be louder. Just wanted to give my 2 cents. I will be waiting on the 8310!!!

I had a Blackjack for a few weeks, returned it and got the Tilt yesterday. It has a lot of nice features, and seems to be pretty stable but I stiill need to tweak it to my needs.

I also like that all my Motorola MiniUSB chargers work with it.

I think that once I get used to it I am really going to love it.

Overall is the 8525 more of a "Solid" Device than the 8925?

Posted by: TechMedik

So far I have had it for 2 hours and I LOVE IT. I cannot wait to start getting some home screen themes for it and actually start using it.

It runs circles around the BJ.

I would say exactly the opposite.

Posted by: ike

I've had mine since yesterday afternoon and I love it. I had been using an 8125 since Feb. 2006. Last night I was using the GPS with Google Maps, that was really neat. I love how you can have a GPS dot show up over an aerial photo.
Some things I've noticed compared to the 8125:

Posted by: HiwayFuzz

Wirelessly posted (HTC-8900/1.2 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.6))

love mine as well..However, I didn't realize how much I did on the 8525 by memory. dang it's hard to adjust to them moving buttons

Posted by: vagrant

I've been using the T-Mo MDA/8125 for the last couple of years. I almost moved to ATT for the 8525, but then read about the Kaiser and decided to wait. - It was worth it. I've got two MDA's and would cook one of them with the latest ROM as things progressed. That's what kept me happy, with running WM6 on that older device. I didn't have to overclock and had full control.

Anyways - The Tilt and my thoughts:
- Built-in GPS works great. I've only tried Google maps, but seems to work as well as my external BT GPS with SiRFstarIII chip. Tracked my position nicely.
- Camera, well...I carry a pocket camera and don't use the phone camera.
- Slingplayer works great
- Processor speed is what I've needed for a long time for Skype.
There may be other features, but since I've been using MW6 for a while on my 8125, I'm probably just used to what would be "new" features.

As for the physical part of the phone. I like the rubbery back and jog wheel. The keyboard is different, from what I'm used to, but it's just a matter of adapting. (I think it's better though.)

Dislikes:
- I was never a fan of the usb-to-headset adapter, but oh well. Time to find a couple and grab one of those 3-in-1 adapters as well, to charge while using it in my car with the stereo. (I don't listen to the radio. Haven't for the last two years, since I can stream from the Net and connect to car stereo.)
- PTT - I don't plan on using this and would've liked to be able to remap that button for something else.

Had the iphone and got this. First im pression is nice but not without its bugs. Internet explorer did not work and had to change the password to fix, now the cingular video won't even play. I hoped the bugs would have been worked out with this phone, so the jury is still out for me.

Posted by: nepali

I'm loving mine! It feels much better than the 8525 while handling (physically). ATT ROM felt a little sluggish so I dumped a HTC ROM in there. It has been fantastic so far. Now working on install all my favorite software. I tried Google Maps earlier and it was VERY accurate. I will probably go with iGO or Tomtom. Let's see!

THere are already many threads of people giving their experience with the Kaiser and the Tilt. Once could argue that your posting this new thread only ups your post count unnecessarily.

I’ve been using if for the better part of a week now and here are my thoughts on it.
Now keep in mind I have no preference one way or another on windows mobile vs. something else. I consider myself pretty objective since I’ve used just about every PDA att’s had since 2000 (im in the biz per say).

-the tilt on the screen really doesn’t give the user any noticeable viewing advantage that I can see. It gets a cool factor but I can’t see any other point to it.

-like the rounded edges and the rubberized back plate. It has a lot more phone feel to it than the 8525 by a mile in my book. Heavy though.

-GPS works great, no problems there.

-the slide mechanism is much improved from the 8525…very solid.

-screen is nice but it’s getting old MS and HTC. The resolution on these things hasn’t improved in a LONG time aside from going from VGA to QVGA. I don’t know who to blame but it’s something that should have been addressed awhile ago. When using MS Deepfish browser that can zoom in on webpage it’s just not even in the same ballpark with a Palm or an iphone. Not really a function thing but come on, enough time has passed, up the res.

-camera-definitely an improvement over the 8525…I was really happy with this for the most part. However, if you inside a house and the lighting isnt bright the camera really starts to lag. I don’t know if this is a processor thing but it’s enough to annoy me.

-why when I press “settings” from the today screen I get about 7 sec of lag…and the same when you in settings and select the “system” tab?? It seems that no matter how fast they get the processor I will still have to deal with this annoyance.

-when I hit “ok” from the d pad it should close the program without any 3rd party install, period.

-if I don’t want to pull out the stylus so I can tap “X” to close the program I can keep going for awhile until I run out of memory until I slow to a crawl or crash all together.

-when getting a notification of a text and then opening and replying I get a terrible lag on the first couple of words.

-sent an mms to 4 recipients in full reception and it failed twice the first time on the first message and 4 times on the 2nd message. I then popped my sim card in my blackberry in the same spot and it worked both times without a hitch.

-why is it that I can access m.google.com once I open my browser from my BB than I can from a super powered 3G device like the tilt?? There are a ton of sites that my BB could whip out in no time flat with, the tilt I end up waiting more times than not.

-couldn’t open excel documents I received via email thought the BB email client. Tried to DL and then view…no go. Forwarded to my gmail account set up on the device and then tried to open….did but lagged for about 20 sec and was terribly slow thought the entire document. Received a PDF and that viewed OK but still had some lag.

I could go on but I guess my experience with it is this. If you want to be able to say that you have a WiFi, GPS, 3G, WM6 phone that can literally “do it all” then by all means, this is the device for you. I don’t think you would be able to say that it can do them all great, and that was my experience. For some reason I really want to get behind windows mobile but every time I just seem to get disappointed. I want devices that don’t lag, don’t crash, easy to use, and enables me to be productive and allows for personal experiences as well like MMS and the occasional video. Get me a curve that can record vids or an iphone with MMS, corp email, and some other features and I would be there in a heartbeat.

..but that’s just me

Posted by: d12ag0n49

I have to agree with the signal strength. With my WM6 8525 I got full signal, however with the Tilt I only have 2 bars. As far as the phone goes I am very happy with it. The only disappointment is the lack of Windows Live Mobile and the HTC Home Plugin (the app with the huge digi clock). Although I was able to find those apps on the xda forums, it would have been better if at&t included them stock on the the rom. Aside from that I did a few reg hacks such as disabling the PTT and remapping it for Voice Command. I also enabled geotagging for the camera or GPS camera in the registry. And I disabled the title bar clock so that the small battery icon would appear, since I had no use for the clock due to the Home plug-in.

.7 good review of of the 'lags and nags'
I had the same experiences. My other issue was the lack of a stable 3G connection so I reluctantly returned the phone. Stability and ease of use is key - I'll keep looking for the Holy Grail of Phones....I'm starting to think that maybe simple and basic is better.

This is my very first WM, PDA, touch screen, good, high end phone. I used Moto V551 for the past 2.5 years and finally got the Tilt. At 1st, I thought it was pretty laggy and slow. Then I started going through options and customizing it. I deleted a lot of sounds and notifications, installed custom Home screen and stuff like that. I spend half a day with the phone and i LOVE it. It just needs some getting used to. The more I use it, the more I love it. I still have many questions and a lot of things to learn and I am very much looking forward to that!

great overview. I was a huge fan of the tmobile mda. I've had a bb8820 for a week and was frustrated with the contacts and calendar. I got my tilt yesterday and here are my comments:

-agree the screen tilting doesn't add much. I'm a girl with small fingers and the tilting screen interferes with the right and left soft keys

-I like the rubberized rounded feel (hey now) and its more solid, which means it's heavier. The weight of the MDA didn't bother me, until I had the Blackberry for a week.

-GPS: great, little slow but we can work around that later

-screen resolution, not a big issue for me, but agreed. c'mon

-the lag is really annoying.

-this is not any where near an easy one handed operation. Moving the keys has really thrown me. It's amazing how entrenched habits become!

-heat. is it me or does the battery get quite warm during a long call? After a 10 minute call, my ear was on fire. Granted I usually use BT but, ouch

-Browser speed is slow. Something i am doing wrong here?

The things that make me love it:
-WM6 - fixed some bugs, esp notifications... that was KILLING me
-lots of 3rd party apps. highly customizable
-a phone that packs it all... can toss my laptop!

Things that will kill it for me:
-can be laggy
-tough one handed operation
-heavy
-3G not available everywhere so signal was actually weaker in some areas.

Unfortunately... it looks like I will stick with the BB.. light and fast.

my two cents.

Thank you guys for you input on this phone. My hubby and I are looking to upgrade and I'm loving this phone. I have a question......the Wi-Fi looks promising but do you have to buy this in a plan? I know I sound stupid but we're new to the Wi-Fi phones and I don't want to get duped by AT&T. I work at a place that has free Wi-Fi so it would suck if I had to pay for it when I could get it free. TIA for any info!!!

For me, the reception on my 8925 is quite better in the same area my recpetion would normally drop on my 8525. I like the different direction that the keyboard slides out(b/c Im lefty ) for some reason my screen is a lot birghter on my 8925 vs 8525 w/the same brightness setting on both(may be the screen protector is different on both devices).

No, WiFi is a piece of hardware that is installed in your phone that allows you to connect to the internet via a hub/router. There is no additional cost(by AT&T) to use this service, however, places like Starbuck's you would need to pay for the use of WiFi. Since you claim you work @ a place that has free WiFi, well youre good to go! All you need to do is enable the WiFi on your phone and your phones software will pickup the signal and ask if you want to connect.

Size-wize what can it be compared to?? I've only seen it online and can't find it compared to anything. I know on Verizon's website they will compare the phones against credit cards, pack of cards, etc....and I was just wondering how bulky it is.

Also I would get the data plan as well. This phone has so many goodies that need internet and being near WiFi is not always an option. Also, if you don't get a Data plan, make sure to disable it in every option and take it out of your features in the OLAM (online account management) so you dont accidentally use something that requires internet and then get a huge bill.

I noticed that as well. I was on a 30 minute call and it was REALLY warm. Ive been told this is a 3G thing.

Nope. I swear in a head to head with a tilt my curve would win its fair share of battles in bringing up a webpage from the moment I hit "enter"

Thanks and again, I don't mean to rip into the tilt, but I guess it is to some what it isn't to others. This is the one thing I cant get past. Regardless of how many times I hear some say that its "meant to be a PDA first and a phone 2nd" I have to wonder why I log for 7 seconds between some menus on a $400 dollar device. You can look at productivity 2 different ways, ease and speed of use and functionality and the features of the device (wifi, gps, ms office apps, ect). Just not sure the tilt gives you the best balance of the 2 when its all said and done.

a little larger than a pack of cards, but heavier. You will think I am crazy, but took my kitchen scale and the tilt weighs as much as three motorola razr

Thank you.....That was one of the many things I hated with the Razr......if you accidentally pressed the internet button and didn't but the phone completely off (because it wouldn't shut down any other way!) it would run up your mins......This was a problem because people were always asking to see my phone and accidentally pressing it.

Thank ya'll so much!!! You guys are being so helpful!!! Thanks Brat girl because I really don't want a big bulky phone like the Treo... and thank you Avenga for the websites!

Hey guys, thanks for giving your thoughts on the Tilt so far. I don't want to add to the number of Tilt threads, so let me ask you something here.

On Premier I can get a new 8525 for $150 or $75 after voice/data plan. The Tilt is $400 or $275 after voice/data plan. Is the Tilt worth $200 more in your guys' opinion?

I do have a Treo750 so am not new to WM completely, but I don't hardly use the Treo at all. I'm thinking the 8525/Tilt might be better just because the big screen. I mainly use phones for PIM functions, then browsing and email. I could even buy a BT GPS reciever for the 8525 and still come out $100 ahead.

Posted by: MakaveliReturns

I've personally owned the 8525 for over 9 months, and now the tilt.

I would take the tilt any day over the 8525. It just looks much better and has a better processor and more RAM. I am in love with this phone.

I am glad that I purchased this phone. You are correct in the comment about the hardware being very sturdy and solid. Especially the hinge for the tilting.

As for functionality, so far I'm making use of all functions. This is my first PDA phone and to me it is the perfect entry. I'll need to use more of the phone and 3G network (speed is brutal in Woodridge Il) but it has exceeded my expectations

I'm playing with this thing and so far I am a little underwhelmed. Mind you, I am coming from Treo's which I used loyally for many years. I set up my home wifi, but it didn't search for it. That's probably a setting I don't know yet. You can't use stock IM over wifi which seems weird to me. The screen is a little meager, but I have been playing with my wife's iPhone for about a week, so anything else would seem inferior. Well, this is going to be an interesting and busy week tweaking and learning this baby. FF is totally foreign to me.
