AT&T Tilt - Tricks, Tips, Hacks and Software

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: tribalgifts

Since many of us are probably now busy setting up our Tilt's I thought I would start a thread to solicit some assisistance on Tricks, Tips, Hacks and Software. I know there are many WM6 geeks out there who I am sure can offer us some assistance.

Posted by: tribalgifts

My first quest was to remove the AT&T Bloatware:-

After backing up my device I performed a hard reset. The first screen that pops up says '..customizations will begin in 3 seconds...'. If you hit the reset button and reboot the device before it starts it will not load the AT&T Bloat.

Please be warned. It also will not load all the ATT specific settings so you will have to figure out all the setting for MEdiaNet, MMS, Proxy etc etc and manually configure each of those functions.

Does anyone know where I can get the Worldcard Mobile Software that AT&T in their 'wisdom' decided to remove?

AT&T didn't remove the worldcard applictaion. It's not part of WM6. HTC just added it to their TYTN II branded phone along with the teaser version of TomTom and other applications.

Turn off notification that SMS messages are sent.

Registry:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Settings you need to create a DWORD, title SMSNoSentMsg and value 1

Posted by: AznAtama

Someone should compile a sticky on all the tips/hacks/tweaks...

can stuff be "uninstalled" afterwards? like, what if we want certain programs, but don't want anything else? also, when it begins "customization"... doesn't that mean the cab files and whatnot are already on the phone? so can't you just manually remove them first before doing a hard reset? I'm confused a little with all this... I just want to remove crap like all the demo games...

I guess I'll boot it up with bloatware when I get my tilt, copy down all the setting, and go from there.

Here's the link on how to install the HTC Home Plug...

When customization begins it adds all the AT&T applications and links like the AT&T Music and AT&T Mall, AT&T homescreen, Get TelNav, Get xpressmail, OZ internet Messenger, Midlets, Games, Push to Talk, Cellular Video, etc.

So its all or nothing, to customize or not to customize

By not customizing you do have the choice of only installing the programs you want, most of these apps can be reinstalled from MediaNet or XDA Developer forum.

when the location for the files are unlocked you will be able to install the apps one at a time.

Posted by: AznAtama

where's the location for the files? and I'm sure that it's not names "get_telenav_link.cab" and [insert program name here].cab... so if anyone can post up name of the cab files, what program they correspond to, and what location these cab files are stored? More importantly, the ATT settings... I'd rather not have to spend the time to input everything separately if I can avoid it.

Also, be casreful of what you install from xda-developers.com... a lot of stuff has a possibility of bricking your phone, just be away and know what you're doing. some stuff is safe and tested, while some is not. in any case, just be sure you know what you're getting into when you start installing random unsupported tweaks and mods (this warning goes with anything really...)

Thanks

I am new to WM. Where can I find all of the ATT Com settings to copy prior to resetting device? Or is there a batch file that will handle?

Thanks

i am sure that there is a way to load individual .cab files for the specifics that you want... at least there was a way to do it with the VZW XV6700.

EDIT:: Someone with TILT will have to confirm that this works as I do not have it yet, but I am almost certain it will.

And here is what Oleg106 says about Accessing the Extended ROM

Accessing the extended ROM is easy, you just need to goto registry and change 2 keys to unhide it. When this is done, reset and you will see the Extended ROM in File Explorer. From there, you can run all the needed cabs. No need to run any ROM unlockers, files cannot be deleted from this partition so there is no risk of losing anything. Btw, the MMS stuff takes up like 5MB. I don't use it and see no reason to pay Verizon money to send these useless messages.

"How would i access the extended ROM cabs, etc. after removing the VZ stuff?" You are not removing anything, you're just not installing the customizations.

"Do you have "Device Lock" on the today screen after removing the VZ stuff?"
Not sure what you mean by device lock. Everything works like it should.

Keys:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\AutoLoad\ TRUEFFS_DOC1]
"Bootphase"=dword:00000002

"MountHidden"=dword:00000000

Is there any way to enable one of the softkeys to do a device lock or have the ability to lock it by holding down the call end key as you can on the Kaiser?

Posted by: Twenty4

Now I just need to get a Tilt!!

Posted by: dfstrasser

Is there a way to adjust the ringer volume and set to vibrate without tapping the screen? I'm coming from an 8125 where the slider on the side did this.

Posted by: avega1027

Ive only seen it to tap on the speaker icon on the top, this is to adjust the ringer volume & vibrate function. To adjust just the ringer volume use the joggle on the left side

The Tilt doesn't have an Extended Rom. Your registry hacks won't work.

I set up Express Mail with Gmail and ran into the problem of it trying to download every archived conversation in my gmail account. Settings for Express Mail seem few and scanty.

My only objective is to get notification on my "Today" screen when I have an incoming Gmail message. Can anyone suggest a fix for Express Mail, or a way to put Gmail's Java app. on the today screen?

Thanks in advance,

Jon

Uninstall Xpress mail, and don't use it. Before you do TURN OFF PUSH by going in to xpress mail settings and unchecking 'push', otherwise you'll get garbage SMS messages from the Xpress mail server because it won't know you uninstalled the app.

Xpress Mail is Seven Mail V6.
Seven is doing an open public beta of Seven Mail V7 which has been out for 6 months and is very solid. In fact I think it's in release candidate state.
Seven Mail V7 is a total redesign and is much better.
http://preview.seven.com/
It's free to use also.
Register and download device:"other" and pick the PPC download.

Posted by: RF9

Here's a tweak.
Enable the "H" Icon for "HSDPA"
They turned it off so you only see "3G"
"3G"=UMTS
"H"=HSDPA
You don't need to do this registry tweak, it'll still use HSDPA when sending/receiving, but turning on the "H" will let you see when it is.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\OEM\RIL
"EnableHSDPAIcon"=dword:00000001

The default value is set as "0", just change it to "1"
A reboot may be necessary to take effect.

If anyone finds a way to turn off the touchflo 'tick' 'tick' sounds, let me know. There's no touchflo settings icon in the settings menu and I can't find it in the registry.

Is Xpress Mail the same as the regular PPC messaging?

How do I describe xpress mail?

XPress mail is merely a go-between pocket outlook and the mail server. Instead of pocket outlook talking to the mail server directly, it goes through the xpress mail server.
Why would you want to do that?
Well XPress mail's mail server can stay logged in to some mail servers and wait for new mail and instantly be notified (push) of new messages. It notifies pocket outlook to go get them. In the new seven mail 7 it actually keeps a data connection idle and pushes those messages directly to outlook.

So it doesn't replace your mail program, it merely facilitates the email transfer.

The main reason for using it is if you want to access an exchange server behind a firewall. They have a windows application that you install on a PC behind your firewall which works as a redirector to xpress mail and then to your PDA. It also syncs calendar and contacts (sort of like blackberry.)

It also will enable push email with some services like Yahoo which you can't get with standard POP and IMAP.

But if you're just using standard POP, IMAP, or MS direct PUSH, there's no reason to use XPress mail or Seven mail. I use to to get corporate email behind the firewall.
I still use direct IMAP (not through seven mail) to get Yahoo (at timed intervals.) Mainly because they don't support HTML email yet.

So, let me ask you this then: I've setup only yahoo mail on my Tilt via IMAP. I change how often I want it to check mail based on what I'm doing at the time.

I've also used Activesync and uninstalled XPressMail. So, am I using xpressmail directpush or not?

The only reason this is concerning me was your comment above "Before you do TURN OFF PUSH by going in to xpress mail settings and unchecking 'push', otherwise you'll get garbage SMS messages from the Xpress mail server because it won't know you uninstalled the app."

Sorry if this seems like a dumb question.

Posted by: RF9

When you set up your account in xpress mail, I think it turns on push by default. You can go in to a menu (I don't remember how, it's been a long time) and you can uncheck an option to push mail.

If you start getting garbage text messages from like 111000013 or something like that (they'll start with the characters: // ) then those are Xpress mail push notifications.
If you don't get these, then don't worry about it. If you do, then you'll have to log in to http://xpressmailpe.cingular.com/ and make sure to delete your device and mail accounts. If that doesn't work you might have to re-install xpress mail (you can download it from the link I just provide) and turn it off, then uninstall it.

But if you get no weird text messages, then you should be good.

It's just a stupid bug.

Nope, no strange SMS messages. Now, if I could only get the spam SMS messages from '36245' to stop.

Thanks,

I'm completely new to the touchscreen world. What's the industry standard on using the screen protector that came with the phone? (as hard as I tried while putting it on, mine has nasty air bubbles and is generally ugly...) Is it really needed?

P.s., thanks very much for the excellent replies to my previous question on Express Mail

Posted by: erikk

A screen protector is good to use. Keeps your screen from getting scratched (which it will eventually even if you only use the stylus). I've found that cheaper screen protectors can be VERY hard to install but a little nicer ones are often much easier to apply. They seem to be just a little thicker or stiffer at least, which makes it easier to keep them flat when applying them. I found pocketPCtechs writeshield protectors to work very well but there are a lot of different ones that people swear by.

Posted by: RF9

Boxwave Crystalclear is a great screen protector. Expensive but they last a long time.
Martin Fields is also a very well received one.
They're a durable plastic that resist scratches and finger prints. Best of all you can clean the screen without worrying about damaging it with a screen protector.

However most of the relevant info is here:

(kudos go to whomever posted this link before in a different thread which quickly got buried)

GPS tracking software for your phone. Great time-waster (unless you are giving this phone to a spouse/sig. other )

The site is crazy slow and tough to navigate but you can find the CAB here:
http://www.reperion.com/newclient/0...006%20versions/
(choose the internal GPS version)

Jump straight to the forums for the best instructions:
http://geocool.reperion.com/Web/forums/thread/300.aspx

works well (when it works - server was down for a while last night causing me fits) and, the best part, it's free.

This app won't do your battery life any favors though - esp if you have it updating every 10 seconds like I do.

is there a way to disable AMR-HR?

Posted by: MakaveliReturns

The AIM that comes with the Tilt is not universal. Anyone have the cab link for AIM Mobile by any chance?

Posted by: Jon44

Is this significantly better than Google Maps?

I thought Google Maps worked quite nicely (and gives traffic info on major highways)--only wierd thing is that it doesn't scroll the map to follow the blipping dot which represents your current position (i.e., you need to manually scroll the map and sometimes you loose yourself...)

This is from another forum, but its helpful

How to to activate the gps photo on the TILT

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\HTC\Camera\
in the folder called P9 change the value "enabled" from 0 to 1.

Now if you launch the camera you must find a new menu called "gps photo".

When you shot a photo in this way the tilt write the position (lat and long) in the exif data of the photo.

For a free exif reader

I`m not taking any credit for this, it was posted before just making it easy for people to find

I have a Motorola SLVR L7 which uses the same mini USB interface as the Tilt. Charger seemed to work fine. I would be eternally grateful if someone could explain why?

Tilt is 5 V at 1 Amp, SLVR is 5 V at 550 mA. Is the issue that a device pulls as much current (Amps) as it needs, so there is no harm in giving it less or more current than it's rated for? (But going too high on volts will always mess up a device?) If that is the case, does a device like the iGo charger need special circuity just to control it's Volts, while providing a big enough current for anything it's likely to need to charge?

In sum, am I not harming my tilt, by using my existing (SLVR) car charger, travel charger, and can I just expect it to charge more slowly?

(Believe it or not I majored in Physics in college, but just could never get this straight)

Many thanks in advance,

Jon

I do not use the PTT button so searched various sites to find a way to reassign it. I now have two shortcuts (vibra switch and voice command) assigned to my to my PTT button (push and push&hold). I used Resco registry editor to perform the following:-

Disable PTT
o Removed PTTService shortcut from \Windows\startup (Saved copy of shortcut in My Documents as backup)
o In the registry, navigate to the HKLM\services folder
o Export the PTT Folder to My Documents (as backup)
o Delete the PTT Folder

Add a new key for the PTT Button (Credit to mbritten xda_forum)
o Navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Keys
o Add a new key called '40C6'
o Add a string called 'Name' with the value 'Button 6'
o Save registry settings

Add a new key for the PTT Button - Press & Hold
o Navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Keys
o Add a new key called '40C7'
o Add a string value called 'Name' with the value 'Button 6 (Press & Hold)'
o Save registry settings

Perform a soft reset for the Registry settings to take effect.

I was then able to assign a program to these two buttons through settings/buttons

You can use the 2 charges interchangeably between both phones. The phone will only draw what it needs. The reason most chargers are 500ma (half an amp) is because the USB spec is for 500ma. Most phones are built to accept more (like fast charging in a car) but the home chargers are typically 500ma. The slightly more expensive Motorola car chargers are 1amp.

Bottom line, each will work interchangeably and will not cause any harm. The only caveat... Some Motorola phones will not charge with other vendor's chargers. This is for marketing purposes (I'm sure they'd tell you it was to protect your phone). Motorola has added a tiny resistor in their chargers just so the phones can tell if they are connected to one of their chargers... Funny thing, other vendors are starting to put those resistors in to fool the phone. cat and mouse.

I've tried installing Google Maps and when I try to use it, it gets past the "accept agreement" screen and to the map screen where it says "loading", then a screen comes up that says "You need to install a newer version to use this program". Newer version of what? I got it from Google today. It tried downloading it from the phone, and also to my PC and moving it over and I get the same message. Has anyone else had this problem, and do you know what it means?

A search on the forum will yield results as well. I just ordered one from NuShield.com which is not the stickly plastic kind that gets air bubbles. It fits under the edges of the screen to stay in place.

Thanks for putting this thread up guys. I will definitely be using this

Question: Is there any way of getting a faster lock with GPS? It took almost 1 minute with google maps. I've used the quickgps app but it doesn't seem like it helps much.

I expereinced the same thing. When I was near my house, I got nothing. When I was on the highway, I had like 8 satellites. Maybe I should look at TomTom software?

Is there any way to map the PTT button to bring up the volume slider? I'm constantly having to switch to vibrate mode and hate having to pull out the stylus and tap the screen.

1) there's a ptt hack to enable this as another usable button. You will need to perform some registry tweaks.Go here for further info:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334759
2) You can always click on the speaker icon on the top of the screen and click vibrate. Its really 2 seconds, 2 clicks on the screen.

flick your finger on the contacts screen.... it will scroll and whatnot just like touchFLO. what does this mean?

i think touchFLO drivers and some OS settings are in there. the shell and the skins aren't fully there.. but still pretty sweet huh?

anyone discover more?

PS i got an issue where mine will turn on from suspend by itself a few seconds after first suspending. anyone else get that?

I have been keeping my Wi-Fi on so that when I'm home, my phone automatically connects to my home network. Trouble is as I drive, it attempts to connect to every Wi-Fi it detects (suprisingly large number in a rural neighborhood).

I was surprised that there is no obvious way to turn this off. Can't seem to turn off the notification and there's no way to limit connections to only ones I identify. Of course, I could turn Wi Fi off every time I leave the house, but could anyone suggest an automated solution?

thanks in advance,

Jon

Another quick question...

is there a way to block out certain apps? possibly just messaging, or just pictures, etc.

Thanks.

dont know of any automated solution, but you can easily turn wifi on and off in like 2 seconds without having to mess with the screen/menus: slide open, press Fn, press right arrow (WiFi), slide closed.

Two quick questions - 1. Is there are way to hide SIM contacts? I am showing double contacts throughout and,
2. Does someone know how to change the scroll wheel so it rolls through all of the today screen, not just vertically? This was an option at start up and I have searched the manual, used the phones help feature and have found nothing.

Thanks

I found a neat solution for 'thumbing' a message during those times when it is not convienient to use the hardware keyboard or 'peck' out a message on the virtual keyboard. It is one of the best I have used so far and wanted to share....and its free!...for a limited time!

"Typing on TouchPal is pretty easy: you just need to tap and slide by your thumb. In most cases, you only need to tap tap tap and use the auto-word predition to input the right word; in other cases, you can slide left/right for a specfic letter, slide up for uppercase, or slide down for a punctuation."

Has anyone found a way to enable any sort of notification, and is there an easy way to toggle the phone's bluetooth on and off (e.g., to safe power)?

A combination of the PTT reassign Registry hack, and the installation VibraSwitch app can allow you to do this.

I did the PTT reassign registry hack, installed the VibraSwitch app, then assigned Vibra (Switch) to my Button 6 (Push & Hold). Works great

Coming from Treo 750, I definitely want an alternative to a sliding keyboard. I just installed it and it does take a while to get used to. At least for now I dont't have to slide the keyboard out if I simply want to answer a quick email.

I use the quick shortcut on the HTC today screen plugin to access the comm manager then just turn off Wifi when I leave the house.

Two suggestions.
Use Comm Manager pro to turn off your wifi when it detects you've left the cell sites near your house.
http://www.commmgrpro.com/
This is something I played with once and have not yet tried doing just what I suggested yet.

The second is one I've been playing with.
I use SBSH Phone weaver (profile manager) to enable and disable Wifi at certain times.
You can also have it enable Wifi when you plug in the chager, but I can't figure out how to get it to disable wifi when I disconnect the charger.

An option comes under the Menu for a contact saying something along the lines of "Locate using Google Maps" When I tried it, it said Express Mail doesn't support Google Maps.

Not sure what all that means but if there was a way to get Google maps to automaticaly locate a contact, that would be great. (I'm going to try the Express Mail fix suggested earlier--anyone else have luck with a solution?)

is there a way to make the main call history list show only the most recent call to/from a contact instead of every single one? seems a little redundant because you can just tap the name to see all the history.

Standard mini-usb headsets do NOT work on the ATT Tilt or Cingular/ATT 8525. These have a proprietary mini-usb jack. You need a special 3.5mm to mini-usb adapter like this one: http://www.elitextreme.com/3stauadforht1.html

two way to do this...
1) edit the registry for a button and point it to \Windows\CommManager.exe

2) install total commander and create a shortcut to \Windows\CommManager.exe in the \Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder, then you can assign it to a button using the Button Settings page.

note that for method 1, the entry will be erased if you open the Button Settings page because it doesnt think its a valid program. but if you dont open the Button Settings page it stays.

I'm still unable to get a good method of accessing Gmail that automatically checks for new messages.

I tried the new version of Express Mail ("Seven ..."), but that didn't seem to work on this machine. I tried setting up a Gmail account under Outlook Express (IMAP?) mail and it can compose outgoing message but always shows no messages (even when there are some in the inbox).

Gmail's Java application works nicely, but it's a pain as there's now way to assign a shortcut to it and you have to hit "ok" a number of times to open it (and it doesn't check messages automatically).

Any suggestions would be appreciated (especially to get a notificataion on the "today" screen)

I'm having problems with Gmail with Tilt and another phone I had the WM6 ROM setup on. It will sometimes pull the mail, sometimes not and the biggest problem is that it deletes the mail that it does pull down, without any intervention.

I've checked my settings, removed and re-setup the account...still same problem. If anyone is willing to share their settings for their E-mail account on the Tilt, I would appreciate it. At least it will eliminate the phone as the problem and I could then focus on my Gmail settings.

Thanks in advance if someone can post the settings they are actually using. No guesses, or "should work" answers please.

The following worked for me:

GMAIL: You must go to your gmail accounts online that you want to download to your phone, and enable that. The way to do that is to go to www.gmail.com, sign in to each account and do the following: Go to Settings-Forwarding and POP, select “Enable POP for all mail”. In the second option select “Keep Gmails Copy in the Inbox”. Disable forwarding should be selected, then click “Save changes”. Allow it to automatically connect! If it doesn’t connect, you don’t have the internet or what not, you can skip that part and enter the info manually:

Gmail incoming is pop.gmail.com:995 and the smtp outgoing is gmail.stmp.com:465. You must also rename the bottom name from POP3 to Gmail1. Any other Gmail accounts you can name Gmail2, Gmail3, etc..I only have two accounts I use on Gmail so I only add Gmail1 and Gmail2. Select Options, put 999 into the header limit, check Outgoing mail required authentication,

Still, Google's Java application works much better--would appreciate a suggestion on how to program easy access to it....

Something seems wrong with WM6 and the way it's handling the E-mail from Gmail. The biggest problem is that it deletes the mail, when it's not set to do that. WM5 is fine, but WM6 on both the Tilt and an older phone (T-Mo MDA/8125) simply deletes the E-mail after exiting the program. (Note: it's set to delete mail manually, not upon close.)

Anyways, while I hoped it was a ROM flaw on the older phone, it appears to be an issue with the mail program on WM6. Fortunately, I have alternatives, but was hoping to use Gmail.

By the way Jon44, WM6 does not have the option to set the header limit to 999KB. Your information is based on WM5.

Thanks for posting the disable ptt reg fix. The case I bought is actually for
a treo (clear window), and it has elastic to grip the phone, and when it rings I usually slide out the phone to see who it is, if not on my ringer list, and when you slide it out the ptt button gets hit, then you have to cancel it yadda yadda yadda....the reg hack stops that, thanks!

The AT&T settings are pre-programed. Even if you do reset the device BEFORE it installs the customizations (bloatware) to get a clean install, it's still AT&T branded and configured.

The one thing you lose that you need, as far as I can find is the "proxy manager." This doesn't get installed.
So either edit the registry to disable it or you can download cab files or .reg files here:
http://www.gadgetech.info/treo/hacks/disableproxy/
The cab files are the exact same thing that the 'proxy manager' uses.
More information about that reg edit here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/inde...Hermes_Registry
Note, the 'disable' only works until you soft reset, it'll reboot re-enabled. To disable permanetly you have to delete the "EnableAutoDetect" key.

But EDGE/GPRS data settings, SMS, voice mail, MMS.... all of those settings are there by default. Cellular Video even works.

No problem. Yes the program for gmail will d/l(@ least on my device) the sent msgs as well as the received msgs. As to the ones allready read(or archived on the phone for that matter), no it wont d/l it again(as a duplicate).

Does anyone know how to make the Tilt only awaken by pressing the power button? Currently, if you put the phone to sleep with the power button, you can wake it by either pressing the power button or by sliding the keyboard out. The problem is the Tilt uses a magnetic switch to let the phone know the keyboard has been slid out and to wake up. Cases that use magnetic closures can inadvertently activate this switch and turn (and leave) the phone on in the case. I have confirmed this with my Pocket Solutions case. The switch must be down near the navigation keys because if I put the phone in the case bottom end first (right-side up), as the keys pass by the magnet embedded in the case, the phone lights up and awakens. I can even make it do this on the outside of the case--passing the bottom end of the phone over the magnet while holding it outside the case will make it do the same thing. However, if I put the phone in the case upside down, the switch must be far enough away from the magnet that it doesn't wake up. On my 8125, it used a mechanical switch and sliding the keyboard would not wake the phone up. I'd like to do the same with my Tilt.

Any registry hacks to make this happen?

You can change the Today theme from Start\Settings\Personal\Today. You can choose one of the Themes (.tsk file) or check the box 'Use this picture as the background' and browse to the location containing the image you want as your Today background. Depending of the quality of the image these tend to be a little washed out looking. But you can give it a try.

I'm not a big fan of Wisbar or Wisbar Desktop application which are needed to support the iPhone skin. I tried it out on my 8525 and found it bogged it down and caused an extreme lag when executing programs. This is just my opinion though. Prehaps, others who have taken on this iPhone project on a Tilt will respond. I have not tried it on the Tilt so prehaps the performance might be better. Check out the Lakeridge Website for the Wisbar & Wisbar desktop apps (not free). Then you will find free iPhone skins in their Wisbar Desktop forum.

BTW:- I use the Sbp Software House, Spb Mobile Shell, and many of the other Spb apps to customize my home screen. They play well together and actually enhance system performance. It is very similar to the HTC Homepage Plugin but is much more customizable. Here are some picks of my Today Plugins.

I got my tilt last week.
I love it so far.

Still have the AT&T rom. My friend has the htc tytn ii. i dont see any reason to switch.

I put the htc today screen on.
installed google maps
installed iguidance 4 (both worked without anything extra, it just found the gps on its own)
used a lot of tribalgifts ideas
remapped ptt push to iguidance.
remapped ptt push and hold to vibra switch
removed a lot of default today screen clutter
have a 2gb card for now(all the store had)
copied over my 8125 programs and contacts

I love it so far!

my only wish at this point was that the wheel controlled volume. I can see a hack coming in the future for that though.

Yes, there is no installer.
Copy the .exe and .xml file (keep them together in the same directory) to your phone. Then find it with the file explorer and run the .exe directly.

Here's something I found very useful on my 8125 and I just installed and tested on my Tilt and it works.

It's called Device Lock.

You install the cab and you have an option called "Device Lock" that can be assigned to a button.

You hit the button and your phone locks.

http://rapidshare.com/files/6302732...ceLock.CAB.html

I never liked the lock link on the Today screen and always seems to be calling people without wanting to. This helped with that.

On my tilt I had to think awhile on which button and ended up decided that my Start button was not need so I assigned that button as my new Lock button.

Im using SPB Pocket plus, that's all. I haven't tried shell.
I disabled the built in HTC task manager 'close button' and use pocket plus instead. They just released a new v4.0 of pocket plus today.

Anyone have a solution for this? I don't have a magnetic case, but I have found the phone awake many times and I attribute that to the sliding mechanism. Help would be appreciated.

ON THE TILT I USE A VERTICAL POUCH AND HAVE NOT HAD the problems.

That is true and I tried that for awhile but still ran into issues. At least on my 8125 if I hit power it would lock all buttons but the device will wake up if you get a call or email. This would happen and then the device would be awake and then I would be calling people again.

Overall so far I'm really liking the Tilt...It just seems I'm able to do so much more than on my 8125 and to have the phone I really wanted.

Posted by: clauretano

Oh hey you can hold the 'end' key to lock the buttons. doesn't sleep the phone like the power button does though.

I have a horizontal case and have not had this happen. I would suggest changing your power setting to turn off device if not used for a certain period of time. That way even if the phone is accidentally turned on it will turn off after the length of time you select.

SPB Mobile Shell throws in several useful today plugins and allows you to easily change soft keys and navigate programs.

I'm gonna have to see whats new in V4.0 of pocket plus. SPB Mobile Shell app has a program launcher but only allows you about 10 shortcuts on your home screen. I use Pocket Plus as it allows many more. I use the PP 'close button' over the HTC TM also.

to make the background picture "less washed out" looking, go to the pictures and videos tab, click on the picture you want to use as your background, hit the menu button in bottom right corner, select set as today background, then choose the transparency you want...you can also center the picture up there as well...hope this helps!

note that for method 1, the entry will be erased if you open the Button Settings page because it doesnt think its a valid program. but if you dont open the Button Settings page it stays.

is there a way of doing a device lock like that? do you know the EXE that the Device lock uses?

It's called Device Lock.

You install the cab and you have an option called "Device Lock" that can be assigned to a button.

You hit the button and your phone locks.

http://rapidshare.com/files/6302732...ceLock.CAB.html

I never liked the lock link on the Today screen and always seems to be calling people without wanting to. This helped with that.

On my tilt I had to think awhile on which button and ended up decided that my Start button was not need so I assigned that button as my new Lock button.

so the questions is., is there a program that can execute this program after a few min's or seconds of idle, (even when the screen is turned off)

I love the TREO lock, this is like it but not automatically

Posted by: VTECaddict

why do you need to lock it if the screen is turned off? the buttons wont respond until you turn the screen back on...

Posted by: eatonjb

because when a Text message comes in, the screen turns on .. from there, if the phone is in my pocket there is a chance of it dialing or something..

After playing around with registry tweaks and trying to delete as many games as possible, I list the "Java" link that (I think) previously appeared under "Programs."

Java still seems to be there, as I ran mini Opera browser, but now I can't find how to open the browser, or where my gmail Java app went.

As always, any tips appreciated.

Jon

are there any add-ins that will show me that an incoming call is forwarded from my office. On my old Treo it would actually show the incoming calling number and the number it was forwarded from. on my last few motos it would show forwarded call and the incoming number. The tilt just shows the number so I'm never sure if it is business call or other

Just to add I was playing with setting and that Device Lock program has a setting area in the phone settings.

Once awesome option is a checkbox that will lock the phone if woke up.

So check that and you can go back to using the Power button and if the phone does wake up it'll be locked.

You can also check Easy Unlock where you just have to click the bottom unlock link instead of the 2 links.

It even had an option to run a program when the phone is locked...not sure what that would be needed for.

So I set might to easy unlock and to lock on wakeup.

That freed up my button so I set it to Live Search so I can press one button and start my GPS goodness when I get in the truck.

wher r those easy unlock settings?

For all those still trying to customize the heck out of those hardware buttons you can try AE Button Plus

I have not had the opportunity to play with this myself, but I am told it is the most comprehensive application out there to customize those hardware buttons.

Anyone tried it? that can give us a review!

Quote:
AE Button Plus

You could set up "Ok" and "Win" keys as well as any other
Green and Red phone button emulation implemented

This utility extends functionality of hardware keys on Windows Mobile devices. It allows you to:

intercept almost any standard button: application buttons, WM5 SoftKeys, Volume slider, Action and even Red/Green phone buttons

distinguish up to 4 different keypress events on each button grabbed (single, double, triple and "long" keypresses).

remap each of the keypress events to "virtual" application button or assign them directly to one of the wide set of built-in actions.

As a result you may "convert" volume slider to up/down arrows, assign several essential application buttons to these "SoftKey" buttons and even assign your favorit alternative dialer to red/green phone buttons.

I have a magnetic locking case and have the same issue. However, it appears to correlated with getting a notification from pop-email.

Any idea why when I'm connected to my home WAP my email accounts won't retrieve mail? I have an IMAP and Exchange accounts set up on it and neither will get mail through my home wireless connection. Other apps work fine. I'm streaming XM radio as I type this.

Go to Settings > System Tab > Device Lock

Options are under there.

You of course need the Device Lock cab installed see above.

Just a quick note that with the auto lock on wake my phone was acting kind of weird so I decided to map it back to a button for now.

Something else I found.

My BT Headset wasn't working with Voice Command. I thought VC 1.6 said it did. But no matter what I had it set to I could not hit my BT button and get the VC tone to speak.

So I went back to the 8125 thread and followed these steps with some changes. With the 8125 I had to change a path but my Tilt didn't even have the string created. So I added as I say below and then it works great. I can activate and use VC through my BT headset.

MS Voice Command over Bluetooth (some BT earbuds have issues)
This allows you to press the button on the headset, you hear Voice Command respond with the beep, give your command, it will repeat the command through the headset if so configured then wait for you to say "Correct" or "Cancel" and then dial. The steps are:

• Install Voice Command to the default location.
• Fire up a registry editor (I.E. Total Commander)
• Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\VoiceCommand
• Create a string called "path" with the content of \Program Files\Voice Command\VoiceCMD.exe

Note: Some BT earbuds might not work on first press of the button. With my HS820 I wait a few seconds if I do not hear the VC sound prompt before pressing the earbud button again.
