New Tilt - Very slow downloads

Am I missing something?

The phone shows an H. I do the dslreports mobile simple speed test and get results like 59kbit/sec. Isn't this ridiculously slow?

I'm in San Diego if that matters, but so far I don't see any improvement over my old EDGE phone.

I also activated the new SIM that came with it, so that can't be the problem.

Try it from a different location from a few miles away.

Also note that bits and bytes are two different things. People often get them confused.

59kb (bits) is bad.

59kB (bytes) is pretty typical

it was defnitely kb and i was using PIE.

is there another speed test site i should try?

i searched for a random one and used opera mini 4 beta and got 293KB/sec or 2,342Kbps. very strange.

I have not tried an opera mini test, but the results may be skewed by it.

It proxies the data request, which is first sent to their servers, and they send a cut down version of the page to you.

I would not be surprised if the 293KB was the speed of the test server to the opera proxy

good point. i did a soft reset to clear the progs i installed and see if that had anything to do with it. looks like it didn't. 43kbit/sec with 1.773s latency.

not good! guess no reason for HSDPA in my area yet.

I just commented in another thread, I am getting horrible download speeds. I can't get higher than about 120kbit sec, where my blackjack was constantly over 700kbit a second?

What kind of 3G speed is this???

I might add, full signal strength.

same here on signal strength. if this keeps up i'm returning it. this was to be my first 3g/HSDPA smartphone so if it's not any faster than EDGE for me there is no reason to have it. i'm pretty disappointed so far.

Where 3G speed really shines is when you are teathering.

That's fabulous, but I tested the speed tethering and it was still dog slow. I also confirmed it by putitng my sim and my blackjack, still slow.

AT&T Network issues? 10,000 people with new Tilts doing

I live in San Diego too and had the same problem. I picked up the Tilt on Friday and returned it today because of the lack of a stable 3G connection. When the device is on 3G the data speed is great and websites/downloads/email are fast but the Tilt kept switching back and forth from 3G to H making using the device more of a pain then pleasure.
- a little interesting piece of information the AT&T rep told me is that the demo devices that they have out on the floor with WiFi capabilities (Tilt and iPhone) are always connected to the store WiFi rather than the AT&T network. This makes them seem very fast and snappy with applications but it's because they are on the WiFi connection not H
(- no wonder those demo WiFi hansets seem so fast)

You may have returned your tilt prematurely. I was getting horrible speeds but it may well have been AT&T's network having issues. My speed just increased to 929kbit/sec, up from about 120kbit/sec earlier today.

As for the H symbol, I assume you did the registry tweak that enabled the H. Well here is the thing, the H symbol only shows up when you are actively transferring data, so as soon as that web page (speed test) is done loading, the icon will go back to 3G. This is by design. I read about that somewhere else and it has no bearing on the your 3G speed, just indicates a HSDPA download is taking place.

Doing a speed test seems to have confirmed this behavior. Also lots of apps that make data access are making my 3G icon switch to H and then back again. This appears to be normal.

Looks like things have definitely improved. I'm going to keep it for at least a week and see what happens. Ran 2 tests on DSL Reports and got between 550-500kbits/sec with under .5sec latency on both. Given, it is 11:30pm Pacific so I'm going to try during the day quite a bit and see what happens.

This is promising though!

What sites are you all running your speed tests on?

What is your typical speed when tethering?

Posted by: yozh

Guys try this site on your devices.

http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/

make sure you choose 3G

Posted by: DubDub

If you are on EDGE, then the average speed is 50-300 kbps. Depends on the connection, distance tot he tower, tower congestion, memory, processor and a couple other factors. I consider anything over about 75 to 80 kbps fast on EDGE!

3G should average between 400-800 kbps and max about 3.2 mbps.

Hmmmm.....my 8525 just got 707.9 on that site. Not bad. I'll test it with a tether later today.
