hey, when are we gonna see a CDMA danger device???

Posted by: angrymic

Most likely never. The 5th and 6th versions of Sidekicks are about to be released and there has never been a cdma version

well i think it's about time that Danger started to branch out and create CDMA devices

why?
Sidekicks have been available for GSM for a number of years now and they are only available for T-Mobile (US,UK, Germany) and Telstra.

Cable Wireless, Fido, ePlus and KPN stoped selling them.

Considering that GSM is THE world standard and danger hasn't made that much of a splash worldwide, why would they waste their time and money to develop a CDMA version considering that CDMA operators are migrating to GSM/UMTS ?

well maybe if they made cdma products too, they would have a bigger imprint worldwide

I don't fully understand though, most other Manufacturers can make both a GSM and CDMA version of the same model phone (Motorola, Samsung, etc...), why would it be out of the question for Danger to do the same? If they made a CDMA version of the Sidekick and let Verizon and Sprint distribute them, wouldn't that rapidly increase their profit?

1. There's probably not a very good financial projection for Danger to venture into the CDMA market
2. Devices like the Sidekick would not function as designed on VZW as per their tendency to lock down the ui.

I believe Danger and Tmobile (US, not sure about Parent Germany) have an exclusivity contract which prevent the sidekick from being released on a competing carrier. Danger is a software company that aligns itself with Sharp (and motorola) to make the hardware. They are not in the business of selling phones, but software and backend servers / support. There is no reason to fight CDMA carriers (which are known for very demanding restrictions) when you already have a GSM product out.

It is also better business sense to align yourself with a cellular standard (GSM) that a overwhemling majority of the planet uses so you can sell to various countrieis and providers, than make a CDMA unit that will be sold on three or so US carriers and possibly in Asia (maybe).

Well maybe sharp and motorola should use a similar design with some cdma product...... Maybe even create a windows mobile version.....just the design element would be used for this.

The swivel screen is a trademark that danger has and nobody else can use it. The name sidekick belongs to tmobile, other gsm carriers that have the device call it a hiptop. Cdma already have phones in the same catagory, helio ocean, verizon enV,verizon voyager, I don't think sprint has anything like the sidekick or ocean maybe that's why you want that to happen since your on sprint. Danger/sharp aren't worried about cdma, they already have enough customers in the u.s. I think they are more worried about the rest of the worl and it seems as if europe and austrailia are just the begining. The only other country that has alot of cdma is korea and india, the world is mostly gsm and danger knows that.
