Shortcut for sending SMS? WM6

I've currently got an Blackjack and a Tilt arrived at my home today... I won't be back from Boston until tomorrow to open it, but I'm sure the question is still relevent.

I currently have to type a sequence of 12 key strokes to start typing SMS messages.

1) Mailbox key (on Blackjack)
2) Select SMS/MMS
3) Select New
4) Select SMS
5) Hit enter in the "To" box to get to contacts
6, 7, 8) typically 3 characters to jump to the appropriate person
9) Enter to select the contact
10) Down arrow to their phone number
11) Enter again to select their phone number (vs email address)
12) Down arrow to the text field

All that just to begin typing a text message...

I would love to be able to create a speed dial key that would start a text message for a select person without having to jump through all those hoops...

Anyone have suggestions or know of a program that would help shorten this process?

To author a new SMS is 1 click.
The Tilt comes with a custom HTC plug in on the today screen. The second icon on the right, you click on it, and it opens SMS in new message (authoring) mode.
This today plugin also has a battery meter, shortcut to scree brightness, comm manager, and call history. All things that are really nice to have 1-touch access to.

Otherwise to just get to the inbox:
1) Start
2) Messaging
3) Right click on the 5-way nav until you get to messaging.
You're now at your inbox, you may have change folders if you're not already there.

Also if you get a new SMS, you can click "reply" on the new message alert and it takes you right to replying to that SMS.

Nothing beats the Treo 750 for SMS which is what I came from. Thankfully they made it pretty painless on the Tilt.

You have got me curious now to see if I can find a way to do a shortcut directly to the "messaging" account in outlook with 1 touch and/or find a way to create my own new message shortcut (duplicate what the plugin does.) Not necessary, but I like to learn these things.
I'm a geek.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to just hold down a key to text someone, just like I hold down a key to initiate a phone call.

EDIT: HOLY CRAP! You can. Just go to their contact information, scroll down to "Send Text Message", hit menu, then select "Add Speed Dial", and it allows you to add a speed dial entry that pops up a new SMS with their phone number already in it.

WOW really nice tip. Good find.

I typically just use the contact menu to find who I want to text, and just select Send message.

That way it automatically opens up a new SMS message with there contact info. Saves lots of time going through the menu's in messages. Plus you have to select the contact number anyway.

Get the HTC Home Plugin. On the contacts tab where you place people's pictures, you can hold down on a person and select if you want to message them. Default single click on a person is for a call. Trust me, the plugin rocks.

OK, I know this is REALLY old, but I think I found something that might help someone trying to do this:
