3G/Edge Stays Connected on Tilt?

Maybe I just don't understand how this is supposed to work, but when I connect to the internet or receive e-mails on my Tilt I notice that the data connection remains active after the download finishes/application closes and I have to manually disconnect. The AT&T support rep said that was normal, but he didn't exactly inspire my confidence.

Is this normal or not? I have turned off my direct push for my exchange e-mail and turned off automatically receiving so that I wouldn't have a live connection out there all the time. I would love to leave both of those set to download when the mail is received, but I don't know what potential problems I will run into with a live connection on all the time. Any thoughts?

BTW I love the phone so far. I am receiving great speeds on 3g (700+kbs), the exchange e-mail and other e-mail options were simple to set up, the GPS using Google maps is working fine. I am on the road in different towns during the week, so this is an ideal toy... I mean tool... for me. I just need to pickup a stereo adapter for my Shure headphones, a handsfree kit and a big ol' Micro SD card and I'll be in heaven.

Thanks in advance

It's normal, unless you have a program that disconnects your connection on a scheduled time.

Thanks for the quick response. Is there one you can suggest? Does it really matter?

It doesnt really matter, but it may drain your battery faster than if its not connected. I personally have it connected 98% of the time & can use my phone the whole day w/o recharging it. I dont know of any program off hand, but over @ xda-developers.com I used to have WM6 on my 8525 & there was a program called HTCustom that allowed you to do what I mentioned earlier plus other stuff. I dont know if that SAME program would work on the tilt since the 8525 and the tilt have slightly different registers.
