Hi,
I'm about to purchase an Iphone. It is likely to be v1.1.1.
I would like to use my existing service with cingular.
Could anybody confirm if these steps are correct for my needs.

downgrade from v1.1.1 to 1.0.2 as mentioned on http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1253005

then

follow the 1st 15steps on thread http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1241195

after following these methods to the t, will i be able to use my iphone with my current cingular sim card?
is there anything that i need to do differently? or pay more attention to ?
thanks in advance guys...

if yo'd bother to search, you'd see this has been asked and answered already. In fact, I asked it yesterday:

QUESTION: Using 1.1.1 with existing AT&T SIM?

Hell, you didn't even have to search, just scroll down.

As far as is known now, downgrading from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2 will only let the phone work with the original iPhone SIM, not with any other, even if it's a Cingular or AT&T (Blue or New) SIM. Then again, not sure anyone has tried, either.

i did search. i read your post too. you were asking about at&t sim card. i have cingular sim card. and there was no definitive answer i could find regarding my question.
many posts on your threads mentioned about unlocking. i understand that once iphone is upgraded to v1.1.1, then it's impossible to unlock.
but i'm not looking to unlock it to use with different carrier.

Regardless, it's the same question: using any other AT&T SIM besides what came in the iPhone, whether it be an old AT&T Wireless (aka Cingular Blue), or a Cingular (Orange) SIM.

Unless you're using it with the EXISTING SIM in the iPhone, technically, yes, you are unlocking it. Otherwise, you can't use the phone portion. Period. using any other SIM besides the one that came in the iPhone out of the box means removing the subsidy requirement, which = unlocking.

Oh, and has been stated in several other threads, downgrading from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2, the phone portion won't work unless the original iPhone SIM is used. It's due to the baseband upgrade in 1.1.1. As far as we know, no one has been able to use any non-iPhone SIM with a 1.1.1 iPhone, downgraded to 1.0.2 or not.

Which is precisely what was said in the thread I posted yesterday.

well.. i guess we have different meaning of unlocking. i was under the impression that unlocking means that you can use other carriers such as tmobile or other gsm carriers outside the US.

Yes, that's what unlocking means. HOWEVER, the iPhone is an anachronism to this, as the phone is locked to the SIM that comes with it. You can't take that SIM out and put in another Cingular or AT&T SIM, and have it work (it will tell you incorrect SIM.) An existing ATTWS/Cingular/AT&T SIM is considered a "foreign" SIM to the iPhone, which is why it has to be unlocked in order to use it.

This was discussed to death when the iPhone was first released. A little searching would have shown you that.
