HTC Kaiser Bluetooth Activesync

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

While I love my HTC TyTn II I can't believe I cannot get activesync to work with Bluetooth. I've got a new Thinkpad T61 with standard thinkpad bluetooth software.
I have searched and searched but cannot find a link to assist me with what should be a simple process.
I've tried initiating discovery from both the HTC and the thinkpad. Com 5 is the port identified on the PC for Activesync, but when using the add device feature in the pc's bluetooth setup activesync is checked, but the configure option does not open.
I'm stumped!
Thanks in advance for the help!!

It's actually frakking pain and not simple.

If you don't already have one, create an incoming com port service on your PC/Laptop. Rename it ActiveSync and set encrypted. Set your PC/Laptop to allow any device to BT to it.

Then on the Kaiser, initiate BT discovery and pairing. It should show your PC/Laptop with ActiveSync as a service. Rinse and repeat a few times until you get this part right.

Then, make sure ActiveSync on the PC allows BT sync on your new port. Then you should be able to do BT syncs initiated from the Kaiser.

Now you can lock down your BT to no visible, and only the Kaiser as one of your allowed devices.

I'm in a similar situation with the Tilt version of the Kaiser, talking to a Dell D800. I have bluetooth working fine - I can use the Internet Sharing program to start up the bluetooth network access point, and the laptop can connect to that just fine.

But Activesync over bluetooth escapes me. On the Tilt if I try to "Connect via Bluetooth" it says there are no paired devices and would I like to set one up. Hit yes and it takes me to the bluetooth settings app, which [b]already has the D800 listed[b]. I've tried adding a bluetooth com port on the Tilt, then telling Activesync to check each com port. Nada.

When using "PIM Synchronization" on the laptop, it sees the Tilt but says that there are no PIM services on the device.

Does anyone have any more specific details, perhaps with explicit steps ?

If you get the no partnership setup popup. Delete the pairing and re-pair again. When pairing, use a passcode that is 6 or 8 digits long. If you use a 4-digit passcode, the service explorer will not show ActiveSync. Once you checked the box for ActiveSync and make sure the PC's ActiveSync is checked to "Allow connection to one of the following: Com4" (or the BT Com port setup on your PC), you should be able to use "Connect via Bluetooth" on the phone's ActiveSync menu to sync.

Geesh, now tethering to my T-mobile not working. Dial up networking partnership created *99# creates connection, but no throughput to the internet. GPRS/Edge working fine on phone with proxy. Says it's connecting and does, but no internet or mail. Works fine on my old T-Mobile MDA.
I even tried the Internet Sharing app thinking that might do it. It too pairs and connects, but no go on the data.
Must be another Kaiser Tilt glitch.
Perhaps someone knowledgeable could start a thread with these little Kaiser Tilt perculiarities.
Thanks,
-john

Dang, so close. I re-did the pairing with a longer PIN, saw and selected the D800 laptop. But the only services it shows are DialUp Networking and Hands-Free. No ActiveSync.

Which is weird, since I can start the Internet Sharing app on the Tilt, click Connect, the go to the D800 bluetooth tray app and do QuickConnect->Network Access->Tilt and poof! it connects. The only synch type choices I have on the D800 are PIM Synchronization and PIM Item Transfer (which is actually under Advanced Config->Client applications).

This sounds like a limititation of the Dell bluetooth stack ?

<Edit a few minutes later>

OK, got it working. Found this description http://axim.dpicts.com/ And followed it allowing for differences. The key appears to be in ActiveSync Connection Settings - make sure that the "This computer is connected to" is set to The Internet, not to Automatic. Set the COM port to the Local Services Bluetooth COM Port - in my case COM8.

I deleted the existing pairing on the Tilt, then set up ActiveSync on the D800 as above. Right after hitting OK, I started pairing on the Tilt again, and this time ActiveSync showed up as a service.

But Jeez - how bloody cumbersome. Bluetooth was supposed to be the easy connection bit of the '90s. Here we are in 2007 and we still have to jump though hoops like this.

I forgot to mention that setting up BT ActiveSync somehow conflicts with BT DUN even though they're supposed to be using different ports on the PC side.

It may be a registry configuration (on the Kaiser side), but I haven't investigated much yet. Then again, BT DUN wasn't supposed to be available for WM6, so ... :P

NuShrike,
I had no idea. How the heck am I supposed to tether my laptop to the Kaiser when in the boonies for email and internet access?
Why would WM6 remove such an invaluable feature?
Do I have to go back to my T-Mobile MDA?
And shoot, now that I think about it, DUN didn't work before I got activesync going.
I'm blown away...

BTW, I know this is off the original topic (solved) so I could move this to the other thread if proper...

Hmmm,
I've done some more research. I'm wondering if we need this .cab file to make DUN work with WM6 in Kaiser WM6 DUN
I cannot get internet sharing to work either, so i'm a little uncomfortable installing this without some knowledgeable feedback.
