For those expecting more functionality with Leopard...

Sorry. It does not look like it is going to happen, so don't get your hopes up. Apple announced Leopard today with a release date of Oct 26. Engadget interviewed the lead OS X guy and here are their main points:

* Users who bought Apple machines from October 1st on can participate in Apple's Up-To-Date Program, which provides free Leopard upgrades (for $10 shipping).
* Boot Camp's beta Assistant software expires at the end of 2007, meaning Tiger users that want to continue editing / creating Windows partitions on their Macs need to do so before January, or upgrade to Leopard. Post-January you'll still be able to boot to the partitions you've created, though.
* Users shouldn't expect expanded sync capabilities between Mail.app and the iPhone, although it looks like you'll be able to read iPhone notes on your desktop machine now.
* File system is, indeed, still HFS+; OS X now supports read-only ZFS, as we'd heard.
* Don't forget to peep the new features / changes list on Apple's site.
* Call us crazy, but with a 6:00PM Friday launch we think you should expect lines -- but not for Apple to sell out.

I put in bold the part thta concerns iPhone users. So while it seems Notes may finally sync, it does not seem like we will be able to do much with them. Even though it only mentions Mail.app, it seems that would signal no new Leopard dependent functionality.

However, it is still possible for something to happen, but I would just not get to excited by the impending 'New Update With Leopard!!!!' threads that are sure to creep up over then couple weeks.

Hmm. Your post indicates that there IS more functionality with Leopard, contrary to your opening comment that it won't.

I expect there's not enough expanded functionality, or more accurately, not the features you want. I've read in several places that not only notes, but ToDo's sync as well, if you're to believe the people testing beta's of the software.

For me, I'm looking forward to the notes sync. It would go nuts over OTA calendar sync, but won't hold my breath. ;-)

I wonder what this means for Windows users. Do they get new note-syncing functionality, or are they left out in the cold? I tend to think that they probably already have this functionality, but until the Mac users get it, it is inactivated. That's total guessing on my part, but we'll see in 10 days!

True the title is somewhat misleading sorry. It was directed towards those who thought Leopard would bring huge changes for the iPhone. It seems all it will bring is Notes syncing, and in a somewhat limited way it seems (they will be treated as an email inbox in Mail.app, which doesn't help those who don't use Mail.app.). TUAW looked at the 316 new features of Leopard and it seems that this is the only one that pertains to the iPhone.

I totally hear you on that, and I wasn't trying to be contrary. If the rumors and trends are true, I think the mere introduction of Leopard is going to introduce new ways for the iPhone to interact with our computers, or just new functionality. I can see the sense of not wanting to code for the outgoing os with a new one right around the corner.

And while I'm one of the people around here who is super-pleased with his iPhone, I'm excited to see what new things will be made available to us non-hacked users!

Do you really think there will be a line at the store just for an OS? I dont remember seeing a line for Vista!

maybe they'll release some super secret feature for the iPhone... who knows.. bah.

Notes Syncing will be coming to Windows via Outlook Notes as well. Not sure if they'll release it before or after Leopard.

Sure there was, just on line as people waited to download the hacked version :-)

There probably will be a line.

BTW, don't get too excited about Notes either. It does not say anything about syncing notes, just that they will be stored in an IMAP mailbox in Mail.app. No guarantee that you can do anymore than view them like a normal email.

There have been beta testers saying that To-Do's are in Leopard and sync with their iPhone, but nothing official.

Sure there was, in the customer service area.

I take it you mean "on the day of the Leopard release" ?

Cause i believe we will see the biggest update to date because of Leopard. Not that it will be the same week as the Leopard release, but like said before all the major efforts in iPhone software were not geared towards Tiger. in house all the major work for the iphone is happening with Leopard...
