iPhone vs. Tilt

First post

Anyways... I'm put into a very strange position. I bought an unlocked Nokia N80 last August. I absolutely loved that phone, it had everything that I would've ever wanted, except for GPS, but I lived with it mainly because there weren't any phones at the time that remotely satisfied my needs. This phone turned me into a mobile phone junkie and I now read engadget mobile religiously.

Over a year later (and one refurbished N80 in my hands) I recently got put into a terrible position. My N80 went psycho, I have absolutely no idea what happened, but it started working on it's own and it was unusable to say the least. So after having an unlocked phone for a year, my contract with AT&T ended, and I'm up for an upgrade.

My first thought was to look at the N95 8gb model. But I was hesitant because A) It was more expensive than my N80 and B) After what I saw happen to my N80, and the customer service that Nokia gave to me (quite bad), I decided against that.

So here I am now, an 18 year old high school student about to enter college next fall, looking for a new phone, preferably on AT&T because I'm trying to save some cash for booze money at college

So I've come down to my 2 choices... the iPhone or the Tilt.

Style wise, both are nice, but there is no denying that I'll get more looks with the iPhone when I leave for school next September, but the tilt is just plain different and I like that. But style wise: iPhone > Tilt

Heres where I need your help. Now that my N80 broke, I'm using a friends LG Shine... Only problem is that it's a Euro phone, and I get terrible service everywhere I go. So I'm looking to buy a new phone in the next few days. The Tilt is great because I save 100 bucks and gain a lot more functionality (GPS, 3G, ect.) But the iPhone services everything I need a phone for, except for 3G and GPS. I'd like a qwerty keyboard for texting and web use, and although they're different styles, both have it.

What are your views? Style or Functionality? And is there anything out there that does a full comparison of the Tilt vs iPhone, or can you guys just lead me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance, you guys are doing a great service to us cell phone nerds.
Cheers

For what you want in a phone (GPS, useful QWERTY, etc) I'd say the Tilt.
And walking around with a Tilt right now will probably get more looks than an iPhone, as less people have seen it.

I would go for the Tilt (3G, GPS, full keyboard, and etc).

Functionality > Style

You should consider the N95-3. Its 3G on at&t, GPS, no out of memory errors, big camera, video, etc etc. Plus you'll have US warranty.

But the Tilt's qwerty keyboard and MUCH cheaper price would be more suited for a college kid.

I'm so confused as to what to do. I was leanin towards the iphone for a little while, but now with what you guys are saying....

Where can I get a N95 discounted from AT&T?

You cant.
I'd opt for the tilt as well. I'm a university student as well, and I chose performance> Style as well. Iphone is pretty crippled IMHO. Cant copy paste? No real GPS, lack of 3G, keyboard, etc etc.
If you plan on taking a few documents on the go, office mobile on the tilt will definitely come in handy, and personally speaking, I still prefer a real keyboard over a virtual one with zero tactile feedback because I'm a heavy texter.

What do you mean N95-3? You mean there's a version of the N95 that has the freq for ATT's 3G network? The only reason i turned away from the N95 is that it only has edge and it seems a little slow. For a phone of that $ it should have 3G on it. Where can i get one that can run off of ATT's 3G network? I think the one i saw had 3G but it was for asia and europe. Not sure... i may be confusing it with another phone.

The new N95-3 supports AT&T's 3G network as well as HSDPA. It also has 4x as much RAM as the first version and a larger battery. You can get it from a couple reliable sources and some unreliable ones. I'd recommend ordering directly from Nokia's website or importgsm.com. I just went through a ridiculous ordeal with mobilecityonline.com and I do NOT recommend them. Others had great experiences, but I didn't.

I see what all of you are saying... But I've gotta say, something is still making me lean towards the iPhone... Don't ask me what it is, but theres just something

I think there are other reasons as well, but I'll give you one very good reason to with the Tilt. You said you're getting ready to start college. Almost every college campus now has WiFi pretty much everywhere.

The Tilt + WiFi everywhere = beautiful.

Posted by: Mattman816

iPhone + WiFi everywhere = still beautiful?

Posted by: spork27

My mistake. I could have sworn the iPhone wasn't going to have WiFi until the next version. Nevermind then.

You've made up your mind, we're not going to give any more suggestions.

Haha. Thanks guys. I appreciate all the help.

So did you buy an iPhone?

Two thing are holding me back from ordering one right now. No 3G and no MMS..

Rumors are that they are coming out with a 3G model. But I've heard within the next few months and also herad in the next year or more.. So who knows...

Posted by: aggie99

well I own both the Tilt and iPhone and if the Tilt was out at the time iPhone came out I would have never bought the iPhone. My iPhone is pretty much being used as an iPod Touch now and thats about it.

No 3g, no MMS (picture messaging), no GPS, no copy/paste, no stereo bluetooth (A2DP), no downloading attachments from email, no file browsing system, limited ringtone functionality, no ability to delete one call at a time, you either have to delete all calls or none, no voice dialing, very poor speakerphone/low volume speaker and headset, no IM client, no office app, keyboard sometimes freezes when using Safari while on EDGE, no support for Flash, no ability to stream music from radio stations, XM or Sirius (there is a workaround thru ORB however for XM), mediocre camera with no Video capability. Yes the U/I is unbelieveable as is Safari and the iPod but it's a no brainer when comparing the iPhone to Tilt or the N95

Tilt has 3G, MMS, GPS, 3.0mp camera, pretty good audio and video playback, all kinds of 3rd party options, a reliable keyboard, and pretty much every feature I listed that iPhone lacks. Pocket Internet Explorer sucks but download Opera Mini browser and browsing is almost as good as Safari on the iPhone. And oh yeah, the call quality is much better too.

Not bashing the iPhone, I still like it, but the Tilt is hands down the better device.

I'm glad to see you've used both devices in question to base your opinion. That's a rarity, especially on the Apple side of HoFo.

I'd recommend the Tilt. I don't own one and probably never will, but I have the iPhone, but it's kind more of a crappy iPod/phone combo ('cause the speakers just suck). And as with the N95, you need a QWERTY keyboard these days especially for college.

Why does everybody keep saying that? Fine, I'm not going to argue about it anymore. Apparently I'm the only person in the world that prefers T9 and can text faster on in than any other method, including all types of QWERTY on any device.

Posted by: jontymisra

You have modified fingers
I got the beauty of both, on external keypad I use T9 only and internal, QWERTY GALORE

Posted by: JonnyBruha

I finally got a chance to play with an E90 this weekend and I was very impressed! The keyboard was much better than I thought and the browsing experience was incredible. Still too big for my tastes, the transition speed when opening it was a bit too long for me, and I'm still much faster on T9.

Back on topic, get the Tilt so I don't make fun of you if I see you in public.

I think why most people dont use T9 is they never take the time to learn how to use it correctly. It is that way for me. A friend of mine uses it all the time, but I cant stand it.. But liek I said, I've never takent the time to learn how to use it. I think most just opt for qwerty because it is something they are used to.

I know that T9 can be efficient if one knows it well, but I'm concerned about my thumbs and putting stress on one thumb constantly leads to many problems later.

Posted by: JonnyBruha

Why would QWERTY be any less stressful on your thumbs?

T9 really isn't that hard to learn if you've ever texted with the traditional tap method. The biggest thing is to know 1) where the letters are, and 2) how to spell. Even so, each QWERTY input method is different on every device and it's always something to learn, even across phones from the same manufacturer. But with T9, it's almost identical on every phone when you use it, it doesn't change on different phones from the same manufacturer, and you only have to learn it once.

'cause I'm using 2 thumbs. Mainly, I find myself not pressing as hard as I do on T9.

Posted by: JonnyBruha

. . . you can use two thumbs with T9. . . ? . . . and you don't have to press any harder than you would on a QWERTY. . . ?

Posted by: jontymisra

I've started using T9 ever since JonnyB raved soo much about it, and I like being able to send quick messages while in class/meetings without having to open my phone up, and when the time comes to send long emails and surf the web, QWERTY is there
