Just got the LX in the mail

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So yesterday my older sister ordered the blue LX online along with a 2 year upgrade. It said the free express shipping took 3 days along with the fact the website said it started shipping in 8 days, making us a little bit depressed. So imagine my shock when i got home from school with a ups package sitting at the front door. If only the mailman knew what was inside... (Thank god no passerby knew or they probably would've stolen it!) That's ok though mailman, all you did was leave a $400+ dollar item sitting out in the open!

Since it is charging right now i'll only be able to go over physical aspects.

-besides the instructional manual it comes with a case, MicroSd card, earphones, and charger

-Everything so far is made of plastic. (disappointing, no?) There is nothing really flimsy so far actually. There is a really nice mirrored (plastic) finish around the border, which actually looks really pleasant. The back however, i have to say is absolutely hideous. The fact that they decided to make a leather finish makes the phone really cheap and dummy like, and they did no improvement on camera aesthetics either. Shame on you Sharp!

-The mood lights are extremely nice! and what else is cool is that their completely unoticeable. At first when i opened the box i couldn't even find them! They're placed under the mirrored finish in the corners. They flash very impressively when you put the battery in. The charger is now in the shape of a mini USB plug instead of the normal standard pin type charger. There is an additional orange light hidden in the mirror finish (different from the mood lighting) signifying the phone is charging.

-One thing i have to note is that the 'sidekick' part of the phone feels a little bit stiff. On the sidekck 3 when you opened the screen it made a really satisfying sound and was really fast. Not to say that the LX build quality isnt bad really. It just feels more stiff and a little less slower. It lacks that "satisfying clacky sound" found on the 3.

-Unfortunately, Danger still hasn't put backlighting on the KEYS USERS WILL PUSH THE MOST! (menu back cancel jump) Its still the opaque plastic kinds. Previously the d-pad was only 4-way, but the new one is now a 5-way one, so you can press the center of it now as a confirmation button. The d-pad is also mirrored, and the trackball remains the same as on the 3. It would've been nice if they could have improved it somehow to keep out dust. The trackball is backlighted as well.

-The keyboard itself is a mixed bag. Unlike the 3, its actually more like the sidekick 2. You can tell since if you push down on a letter, there is a slight depression in the plastic around it. Also before, the entirety of each individual key typed in the letter, where as the LX you need to press center. This is no problem though, as the keys are pretty small. The plastic is actually a bit softer than the one used on the keyboard on the sidekick 2. Whats nice however, is that Sharp made the depression on each key a bit shallower. What I mean is that you dont have to press down as much on a letter than the SK3. This results in less time typing in one letter so faster texting overall. The space bar is divided so you can either press on the left, middle, or right side.

-Another con is now your sidekick is extremely prone to smudges. The screen takes up most of the real estate and you'll probably spend time just mindlessly wiping down the mirrored border.

So that's it for now. Sorry if it was confusing in any part

UPDATE:
I was actually wrong about the keyboard. You can press anywhere on each key to get a response. sorry for the mixup!

What I love is that people think its black...

But its not... (Why the heck would Sharp purposely make a black looking blue?! Its okay! Just make it black!

The charger is now a USB and has a separate light. Mirrored finish is cool looking.

Side view. The shoulder buttons have pretty much the same feel as the SK3

Comparison to a mouse and keyboard.. And not only does the screen smudge and leave fingerprints, so does the entire front and sides!

Keypad (Is anyone else disappointed in the choice of color/material?) Sorry for the bad macro

Same old trackball. Surrounded by UNLIT FUNCTION KEYS! WTH sharp!

Pffff. If it doubled as a wallet then I might like a fake plastic finish on a sidekick.

Unimpressive looking Camera. The flash is unbelievably strong. (lights up an entire room!) Shame it can't be used as a torch. Would come in handy

UNLIT KEYS! Here's the mirrored D-pad. Its actually wobbles, which is a con, but it can finally be used as a 5-way

Startup screen

Size comparison again

Starting up

Pfff... Why else would I buy this phone... Blue lights are awesome!

start up screen again

You don't have to have a sim to use it! Nice job Danger!

Keypad at night. Like the white. The yellow looks like mustard though...

Night view again

Entering a number

Charger shot again.

And by the way like the old SK3, you have the secret snowboard game! (no pic)

Also, if you keep flipping the screen over and over, then it is no longer stiff. It becomes smoother and faster

It looks so pretty. I used to do the two phone thing back in the day when the kick 3 first came out and also with the kick 2. I might have to do that again with this on a flexpay plan and have it as my messaging device.

use it for a while and tell us what you think. i have owned every sidekick. my sidekick 3 is good except for reception. i always get no wireless service warnings. or is that with every tmobile phone.

Unfortunately it turns out that the d-pad is still a freaking 4 way!!! This has presented a huge con, since the reason i thought you could push down on it was because it is EXTREMELY wobbly. You can slides down, left, right, up, and is pushable. The sk3's d-pad triumphs over it.

Another major issue i found is that the ambient light sensor is way to faulty/sensitive. when i was playing with it in an extremely bright room, whenever the screen was facing me, it will lower the brightness level. (annoying right?) So I was straining to look at the dark screen. The only way to fix the problem was to face the sidekick towards the light.

To me this is a major problem that should've been checked, as the only time it won't be a problem if you are using the sidekick at night.

You can adjust the Dim After option under Battery & Display as well as turn off the Ambient Light Sensor option.

I am assuming it's the same, but is the web browser any better on this than the sk3?

Speed wise, maybe a lil bit. The view is defintely much better than the SK3.

Is there any video functionality (youtube etc.)?

Posted by: joshuwaa111

NO omfg why do people ALWAYS ask if there's video when it's been answered a MILLION times!

Posted by: austing03

The sidekick will never have video......I guess its going to take a huge decline in sales before they add basic features that outdated "free" phones...I'm amazed at how they add one bell and whistle and the same idiots go and sign a 2 year extension year after year. I'll admit they got me once with the SK3 and the novelty factor wore off in about a month lol after that it was back to the trusty old RIZR. Its great if all you do is talk and message though.

Posted by: manchuia

sorry .. I guess I should have been more clear.

Does the browser render the pages any better? Say if you go to Howard Forums, does it look any better than it did on the SK3, or is the formatting still a bit off?

Posted by: FattyChalupa

Anything is better than the older sidekicks simply because the screen resolution isn't a piece of garbage. Since this isn't my sidekick i haven't used it that much and so can't really compare it to the old SK3.

Posted by: #1tech

it's nice but i will stick with my sk2......only when they add wifi, a2dp and video capabilities then i'll upgrade. but until then i'm content.

ok well i didnt get a chance to read the whole thread but i did see the first pic or 2 u posted up and u said u wish they just made it black not blue that looks black.

well in my opinion i love the color. navy or midnight blue is actually one my fav colors for that reason that at night or dark conditions it looks black but n the light u see it really is blue.

i never really cared for the kicks myself but after hearing about the release of the sk lx blue im really trying keep myself from buying it. but i fell in love with it even though i dont need it. the current phone i have i love and has everything i want in a phone really and am very happy with it. but i still want this phone lol. but at same time im afraid to buy this phone than another one comes out n half a year or so (besides the slide, which i hear is not as good as the lx or sk3) i have bad luck 2 of buying any products and than a newer version comes along.
