hey guys.. i haven't seen many threads on this...

is the GPS in the Blackberry 8310 unlocked? Can you use it with Google Maps and/or Blackberry Maps.. etc??

or do you HAVE to buy their TeleNav?

Thanks in advance.

Yes you may use it with Google Maps or any other program.

Are you indoors or outdoors? Generally, you need to be outside to pick up the birds.

GPS will work with any app that supports it but I must say, none of them compare to telenav.

I have a dedicated GPS I rely on most of the time. I'll only use the GPS on the 8820 as a backup for when I forget to pack the Garmin Nuvi.

That said.....

I'm very impressed with Infospace FindIt. The displays while moving aren't that good. But it does find the local POI very well and give decent voice turn-by-turn. I've also tried the MapQuest Navigator. As a free service, it's pretty good. But if I have to pay for it, the Telenav is much closer to my Nuvi.

question--can anybody update the 8300 curve to get gps? I got mine about 2 weeks before the 8310 came out--now they have refurb 8300s for $99.

You can't "update" the 8300. Your only option is a bluetooth GPS puck if you stick with the 8300.

Return it under the 30 day plan and get the refurb or the 8310. People do it all the time and AT&T reps are used to it.

it's past the 30 day period now and I sent in my rebate. Plus, it has a couple of ugly scratches on the phone (not on the screen).

I use AmazeGPS and really like it. The GPS seems to lock quicker than w/ Google Maps.

Does that program have auto reroute? What about the ability to turn off the back light and turn it back on when giving new directions?

I found that app to be incredibly slow on my 8820. Seems to take twice as long to download maps as Google, WIndows Live Search, Mapquest and InfoSearch.

Yes, it does its actually and very nice and accurate i was surprised the first time i used it. You can change the black light in telenav to i think On, off or on with new turns.
