I was reading the manual and

"You may have the option to record a new ringtone. Recorded ringtones are saved to the Imported category.

Record a New Ringtone

1. From any ringtone selector, select Record New Ringtone.

2. The Stand By dialog box appears. To begin your recording select the Start Recording button or press the LEFT SHOULDER button.

3. While recording, you can CANCEL , Pause/Resume , or Stop Recording . When finished, select Stop Recording.

4. The Recorded dialog box appears. From this dialog box you can review your recording by selecting one of the transport controls: play from beginning, play/pause, reverse fast, fast forward. You can also CANCEL the recording altogether or Re-record .

5. Once you select Done , you are prompted to name your new ringtone. Type a name in the text field, then select Save .

6. You can now select this new ringtone from any of the ringtone selectors in any of the applications. Look for your new ringtone in the Imported category.

Note: If you already have 10 ringtones in your Imported category, then you will be prompted to discard one of your existing imported ringtones.
"

Is this true on the Tmobile version? It is a big selling point for me.

Na T-Mobile definitely locked it out

Posted by: ElectronIntegra

Thank you.

Yeah Tmo has it locked in order to profit from the catalog :-\ or danger set it up whichever.. which seems awkward Tmo would do it when theres other handsets like the the new Razr 2 that allows you to use your mp3s as ringtones.

I know that the preproduction units allowed you to record your own, there was a youtube video of pre-prod. unit that had that option when he was demoing the mood lights.

Will we be able to put our own mp3 ringtone? Is it mp3 ringtone compatible?

Posted by: samsung.user

No, no mp3 ringtones with the sidekick, and probably never will be. I'm sure t-mobile makes a fortune from catalog sales. Allowing mp3 ringtones would stop a good portion of that money. I think you even have to buy the alarm clock too.

Posted by: manchuia

yeah, if it's the same as the previous models, you have to buy the alarm clock.

Tmobile didn't lock it out on the Razr2 because you can get an unlocked razr2 and do it, and by doing that, you don't have to renew your contract. you ahve to get the sidekick through T-mobile, so you have no choice

actually the availability to have unlocked units available probably makes little difference in the situation.

the Sidekick platform is built around an easy download catalog which allows you to install / uninstall any program on the phone. As they are doing this with programs, they felt they might as well do it with ringtones, alarms (alarm clocks) , etc. No other device in tmobile's catalog is designed around this "impulse buying" method.

Although I think it would help their profits, the same experience isn't as pleasant on, say, a RAZR where the layout and interaction of the programs is fundamentally different. If you want to see a company try this method across ALL of their devices, look at Verizon. The wanting to keep the UI / OS the same across multiple devices has led the company to having a very generic / bland UI that doesn't really motivate the end user to purchase these minor add ons like on the sidekick.

In addition, Tmobile actually doesn't do any of the work in this regard as Danger is a software company first, and is able to keep a great user experience even while the customer is being nickled and dimed for "extras" (like alarm clocks).

Say what you may about this method (I have), but of all the phones that offer additional software to load and then use (from games to actual usable programs) the sidekick is by far the easiest, most stable, and cost effective (when you actually compare purchase price, not "torrent price") package out there. That ease comes at a cost, $2 per ringtone

P.S - sorry about the long delve.. reading up on usability / interaction design

try using phonezoo.com or mobile17.com or myxertones.com

those all send ringtones through a pic message maybe u can save something as a ringtone from one of those websites. let me know if it works

Posted by: shortysupra

sooo...will the sk slide allow mp3 ringtones, since its MOTOROLA instead of SHARP for the 1st time ever?!?!?

Posted by: manchuia

no, it's not the manufacturer its a software (Danger) and carrier (Tmobile) decision. As long as those stay the same you prolly won't see ringtones

Posted by: WOBBABS77

SEE. I would not mind buying....as I only need one message alert ...I would like to have options BUT EVERY SINGLE FREAKING MESSAGE alert and ringtone are all these GHETTO black laced crappy things that I would not be caught dead with on my kick........THERE has to be a way to add a message alert so when someone gets a text message there is more to choose from then what comes with the LX...bc everything in their cat stinks

Posted by: manchuia

we get it, you don't like the selection. I would mind the language in the future. As such I have reported you.

There is no way to add anything that is not in the catalogue, if you would like that option, you might want to look at getting a different phone.

manchuia

I am sorry that ur a liberal and that u took offense to the TRUTH and me stating that every SINGLE tone on the kick available for download is GHETTO and black laced.......I am sorry if you do not like THE TRUTH, but those white individuals, like myself who don't believe in promoting Ghetto mentality or acting like that prefer to have a choice of something more suitable rock, techno I would even take a bad instrumental song.....these forums are to express disdain for products and seek help.

YOU are far to intrested in trying to make things politically correct ...and not allow people to list the truth..with ur smug...get a different phone...
for your information...I have 2 other phones...I bought the kick just for messaging and ease of typing, but far be it from me to want to be able to state the truth that the device is primarily used by non whites NOT to mention by Tmobile having NOTHING but ghetto type tracks for download they are promoting that stereotype NOT to mention people the likes of you who TAKE THE TIME TO REPORT ME FOR STATING THE TRUTH MAKE IT SEEM LIKE I USED THE N word.........and I didn't but you being the N word by definition....wouldn't understand that now would....I hope you feel better reporting me.............I being a computer tech........went to my friends last night..........I hacked the device......I have my new message alert......and maybe if you were such a N u would know that to instead of being so finite and saying there is no way.......THERE IS ALWAYS a way LOL

oh dont forget to report me again....bc we all know that is what you live for...u have nothing better to do then play police in an arena where u are well....u get the picture...ttfn

For someone who doesn't like "ghetto" people, you sure talk like one. Learn how to use punctuation and capitalization correctly. And because you can't even speak English properly, I call shenanigans on your claim of having "hacked" the Sidekick.

Posted by: S2K<<

Haha, that was a funny one.

Yeah, but it says that with the SK3 and SK2 (just reworded), But no, it was disabled in the Danger Hiptop OS via T-Mobile instruction (as they said earlier) To profit from the catalog. It sucks too, cause they make you pay like 3-4 bucks for a 5 second ringtone...Only downside of owning a Sidekick, and that if unlocked it becomes a regular phone (like a older Nokia) with only text, phone, and....well thats it haha. So it's better off prepaid or contracted.

or...

You could (like most already know) learn Java, become a developer, and get a dev key from Danger. XD And that little ghetto thing, I see what you mean, but there's a limit. I know you could be capable of expressing yourself in a non-ignorant sounding way.
