Does 3G Suck Up More Battery Power? (Tilt Battery Power Is Horrible)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

3g seems to suck up more power as similar use on Tmobile Wing with Edge produced much longer battery time.

I am really struggling with this issue.
AT&T management says they are not aware of any problems.

I now have a trouble ticket into HTC and I am supposed to get a response Monday.

AT&T even went as far as offering to replace the phone (no option to only send me a new battery).

I really do not want to go through that trouble yet.

Install this tool, and set it to GSM for everyday use.

If you are web browsing or whatever, switch to UMTS.

You should see a dramatic increase in battery life.

This is a 15 day demo. You will need to purchase it if it works for you.

You can, for free, install a 3g comm manager.

Like how long are we talking here?

I run 3g all day and get 12 hours out of my tilt. I guess maybe that's not good enough for some

Yeah that's what i'm wondering. If he's getting only 1 days usage out of the device then yeah he's just being picky but if it's only 4-8hrs then yeah something might be wrong. The fact that the device is new and therefore he uses it more playing around with GPS (just because!) as well as other features (once again just because) is probably the reason it's going out on him.

Fact is tho, 3G does use a bit more power than normal GSM but it's not like it uses 50% more, If the phone lasts 2 days in GSM mode only then it should at least last 1 1/2 days in 3G mode with the same usage. Problem is tho because you have faster data you can get a lot more done which uses more power to process all that information that you are now downloading at breakneck speeds. The CPU does a lot more work now compared to the EDGE Wing device he probably barely uses now that he has the 3G Tilt.

3G devices that are active on 3G will suck battery MUCH faster than GSM/EDGE only (Blackjack had the same issue). There are a bunch of things that you can to to mitigate this... The most significant suggestion is to lower your screen brightness as low as is comfortable for you (I'm good with just one "notch" above the lowest setting) - Related to that, set your backlight timeout to something reasonably short. Finally, set your device's key lock so only the power button will wake up the phone once it is in standby. All of these suggestions simply add up to not having the screen's backlight waste your precious battery resources.

Also... turn off bluetooth if there's a chunk of the day when you just don't need it on. That wastes battery, too.

Using the above, I've found that with a typical business day of use (a good hour or so of various calls, almost always using bluetooth; nonstop push email; mostly 3G usage) that I'm dropping to 30% battery life by 12-14 hours in. I'm actually OK with this. On a day like today when I haven't had much talk time yet and my email has been fairly light, I'm sitting at 90% with the phone off the charger for 4.5 hours so far. Again, not bad.

The battery life certainly isn't outstanding, but if you adjust your expectations for what the device is (data intensive, large powerful screen, 3G) relative to a smaller basic "dumb phone" I don't think it is so bad. I've been using PDA phones (and the smaller smartphones) for about 3 years now; this meets my expectations for battery performance.

Two final tips - one (fairly obvious) is that if you're using the phone in your car, take advantage of being in a place where you can top off the charge. The other is to pick up a battery extender - there are a whole bunch out there that will allow you to recharge the phone, or at least boost its power, off of AA/AAA/9V batteries. The one I happen to like is a rechargeable battery itself, but it so light and thin that I can stash it in my briefcase and forget about it... Take a look at http://www.apc.com/resource/include...?base_sku=UPB10 - The USB cord that it comes with will work fine with the Tilt, or you can pick up a retractable cable from many sources - such as PocketPC Techs

I hope this helps!

Battery life is significantly reduced if you are in a fringe 3G area where the phone is constantly in and out of 3G and always seeking the right place to be. so to speak. I had a similar problem with the Blackjack.

I haven't noticed 3G draining my 8525 battery to bad since it launched in my area. If fact it seems a little better than before. But I'm not streaming video all day or anything. I do have a BT hooked up all day and its checking a couple email accounts every 15 minutes. My battery life has been much better since I stopped running Xpress Mail.

One thing that helped my battery life was to tap the power button when I am putting the phone it's case. This shuts down the unit right now and does not wake the phone until you get a call, a timer expires, or you tap the power button.

Before I did this I would sometimes see the display light when I was not using the phone. I believe the display was illuminating each time I had a notification.

The phone was charged this morning and after playing with the GPS on the way to lunch I still have over 85% charge.

I could not load 3g comm manager on my tilt anyone else have this issue.

How long have you had the Tilt.
1 day, battery life horrible
1 week, battery not bad.
2 weeks, battery life pretty good.

Folk, with a li-ion battery you HAVE to give it 10 charge cycles or so before you'll see better battery life. 1 full charge cycle = 2 recharges at 50%. Also let the battery run down once and then fully recharge it, that'll help.

I run my Tilt on 3G with push mail all day long and still have plenty of juice left over at the end of the day.

I consider good battery life 20% or more left over by the time I go to bed if anyone is curious. You'll never get more than 1 day out of this thing.
