4 Fast Questions About the iPhone

Background:
I live in Minneapolis, MN and am close to switching to the iPhone. A friend has kept me up to date with unlocking and hacking the iPod Touch, so I am fairly familiar with that aspect of the iPhone (I assume the processes are the same).

1. How is the reception of the phone? I work in a lot of different houses and areas and need a phone with a strong radio.
2. Can I create appointments for the calendar on the iPhone and have those sync to my Google Calendar? and vice versa?
3. Is the email client on the iPhone capable of receiving attachments? I use Gmail for my email and really want to be able to VIEW .xls and .pdf files that get emailed to me. I would love to be able to edit the files or add notes to them, but I feel that may be above and beyond the iPhone.
4. Are there any VOIP programs for the iPhone? I would love for the phone to flip over to wifi when I am in the basement of the house and still give me the ability to send (and maybe even receive?) phone calls.

Thanks.

1- Reception i guess depends on what area you're in, if you get really good AT&T service (or whatever carrier you plan on using) then you should have no problem. from my personal experience, my iphone reception is great.

2- no calendar syncing with GMAIL

3- you can view attachments but cannot edit them.

4- no programs for VOIP. 3rd party software will be released in february, but i dont see apple allowing VOIP software.

How about syncing with Outlook calendar?

My friend with an iPod Touch said the iPod did not work well with Outlook, but worked great with Google Calendar, so I was assuming it was the same with the iPhone.

If it doesn't play well with google or outlook, are there any PC calendar programs that it will sync with?

It is possible to sync with gCal if you have a mac - http://spanningsync.com .

I'm not sure what PC solutions there are out there.

It syncs with Outlook just fine. From there, you may be able to use Plaxo to sync over to gCal, but I'm not sure...

This link also might help with more of your questions as to what is and isn't supported:

I don't have an iphone yet. My plan expires in Feb. and I will get one then. Anyways, over the summer, I dropped my SLVR in the pool and it died. I got a cheap replacement Motorola phone (the prepaid one) and am using it temporarily. I was at the library with a friend, who has an iphone. On his iphone, it said No service and my $20 phone showed 3 out of five bars.

from the threads i've read this is generally the norm, right? the iphone transceivers are not of the greatest quality compared to other manufacturers.

When you say your plan ends in Feb., are you referring to your AT&T contract? If so, I would suggest you just buy the iPhone now and upgrade as you are able to do so at anytime. Waiting until Feb. only means your contract will start two years from Feb. 08. If you do it now, it would be two years from Oct. 07.

That is bad news.
Maybe I'll have to consider a different phone with a poorly designed UI instead.
